. Introduction he CMS experiment at the LHC pursues a diverse program of heavy-flavor measurements. We present here some recent highlights of this program, including searches for the rare decays B s (B ) µ + µ and D µ + µ, which are excellent tests of the flavor sector of the Standard Model with sensitivity to possile physics eyond the Standard Model, and the first oservation of the excited aryon Ξ. We also present the oservation of two decay modes of the B c meson and production properties of the Λ aryon. All measurements were performed with the CMS experiment using pp collision data collected in at a center-of-mass energy of 7 ev. CMS is a general-purpose experiment at the Large Hadron Collider []. he inner detector contains a silicon tracker composed of pixel layers at radii less than 5 cm and strip layers out to a radius of cm. he central region η < has layers of pixels and layers of strips. he cylindrical geometry of the central region changes to disks in the r z plane for the forward region. Each side of the interaction region contains two endcap pixel layers and up to layers of strips. he tracker, PWO electromagnetic calorimeter, and rass-scintillator hadron calorimeter are all immersed in a.8 axial magnetic field. Muons and hadrons are tracked within the pseudorapidity region η <., with a p resolution of aout.5% for tracks used in the analyses presented here.. First oservation of Ξ he first oservation of a new eauty aryon, Ξ, is reported in decays to Ξ π+ []. he precision of the CMS tracker is well utilized in this decay chain, reconstructed with three secondary vertices. First, Λ candidates are formed from oppositely charged proton and pion tracks. he Λ candidates are comined with pion candidates, where the charge of the pion is same as that of the pion in the Λ candidate, to form Ξ candidates. he Ξ candidates are comined with J/ψ candidates, which are formed from the comination of two oppositely charged muons, to form Ξ candidates. he muons are also used to trigger the event. Finally, the Ξ candidates are comined with pion candidates to form Ξ candidates. A total of thirty variales are used in the final selection, with the most signal-to-ackground discriminating power coming from displacedtrack impact parameter and displaced-vertex requirements. Figure shows the final invariant-mass distriutions for the Ξ and Ξ candidates. he significance of the signal as measured y the log of the ratio of the fit likelihood modeled with and without a signal is 6.9 standard deviations.. Λ production Decays of Λ aryons to the final state J/ψΛ, with J/ψ µ + µ and Λ pπ, are used to measure the differential production cross section verses rapidity and transverse momentum []. Events are triggered with a displaced dimuon trigger that required dimuon p > 7 GeV and a separation of the dimuon vertex from the eamspot greater than three times its uncertainty. Oppositely charged muon candidates are comined to form J/ψ candidates, while Λ candidates are formed from oppositely charged pion and proton candidates. he Λ candidates are formed y comining a J/ψ candidate with a Λ candidate. he Λ yields are otained y fitting the invariant-mass distriution to a peak aove a cominatorial ackground. he efficiency to reconstruct a Λ candidate

. Oservation of B c Decay Modes he B + c meson, consisting of a eauty quark and a charm quark, presents a unique laoratory to study heavy-quark dynamics. We present the oservation of two decay channels, B + c J/ψπ + and B + c J/ψπ + π π + []. In oth channels, J/ψ decays to two muons are used to trigger the events. Either one or three charged pion candidates are comined with the J/ψ candidate to form B + c candidates. A total yield of ± 6 events are oserved for the one-pion-decay channel, while 8 ± 9 events are oserved for the three-pion-decay channel. Search for D µ + µ he rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay D µ + µ is highly suppressed in the Standard Model, ut can e enhanced in new-physics scenarios. We present results from the first search for this decay at CMS ased on a small portion of the total data set representing 9 p [5]. A single-muon trigger is used to search for the signal decay and for a control channel, D K µ + ν, which has similar kinematics. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio of the efficiencies for the signal and control channels. Signal candidates are reconstructed y comining two oppositely charged muon candidates. he dimuon candidate momentum is required to point ack to the eamline. he control channel is reconstructed y identifying D candidates from D + D π + decays. Backgrounds for the search sample are measured y interpolating from the dimuon mass sideands in data on either side of the D mass range. No evidence of D µ + µ decays is oserved, and the control sample yield and known ranching fraction are used to determine an upper limit on the ranching fraction. At 9% confidence level, an upper limit on the D µ + µ ranching fraction
is calculated with the CL s technique as < 5. 7. Figure (right) shows the invariant-mass distriution for the D µ + µ candidates, where the red and lue regions are the signal and control regions, respectively. 6. Search for B (s) µ+ µ he rare flavor-changing neutral-current decays B (s) µ+ µ are highly suppressed in the Standard Model, ut can e altered in many new-physics scenarios. In particular, limits at the LHC are now approaching the Standard Model prediction for B s µ + µ of (. ±.) 9 [6]. We present the results of a simultaneous search for B µ + µ and B s µ + µ at CMS in pp collisions at s = 7eV, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5f [7]. Candidate B (s) mesons are reconstructed y fitting oppositely charged muon candidates to a common vertex. Signal events are selected preferentially y requiring the dimuon vertex to e well separated from the eamspot, the dimuon candidate to e well isolated from other detector activity and that the two muons form a good vertex. he search is performed y counting events with dimuon invariant mass within appropriate windows for B (s) mesons. he event sample is divided into two categories, arrel and endcap, where the former contains only candidates when oth muons are within η <., which have the est momentum resolution. Backgrounds arise from cominatorial muon pairs, which are measured y extrapolating from the sideands of the dimuon invariant-mass distriutions, and from peaking ackgrounds from semileptonic or hadronic B decays where hadrons are misidentified as muons. he peaking ackground is measured y scaling the ackground expectation from simulation y the hadron misidentification rates measured in CMS data. No significant signal is oserved in either channel. he dimuon invariant-mass distriutions are shown in the top plots of Fig.. Upper limits on the ranching fractions are determined through a normalization channel, B + J/ψK +. Many systematic uncertainties cancel in the ratio of the yields and efficiencies etween the signal and normalization channels. Upper limits of B(B s µ + µ ) < 7.7 9 and B(B µ + µ ) <.8 9 are set at 95% confidence level using the CL s technique. he CL s+ curve for B s µ + µ is shown in the lower plot of Fig.. Additionally, a comination of the CMS result with measurements of the same channels from LHC and ALAS is performed, which provides the est upper limits to date for these channels, B(B s µ + µ ) <. 9 and B(B µ + µ ) < 8. at 95% confidence level [8]. 7.
