Activity Sheets Q. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, where is it coldest? Warmest? A. It is warmest near the equator. It is colder the farther away from the equator you move. The North Pole is very cold. Q. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, where is it coldest? Warmest? A. It is warmest near the equator. It is colder the farther away from the equator you move. The South Pole is very cold. Q. Why do the seasons change? Choose a), b) or c). a) Because the Earth is closer to the Sun in summer b) Because of the tilt of the Earth s axis c) Both a) and b) A. b) When the Earth moves around the Sun, some parts of the Earth get more light than other parts. The Sun s light (and heat) hits different parts of the Earth at different times. Sometimes, the Northern Hemisphere will get more light and be warmer. In time, as the Earth keeps moving around the Sun, the Southern Hemisphere will be warmer. Q. During which season does the Sun hit the Earth at the most direct angle? A. Summer Q. During which season are the days the shortest? A. Activity Sheets Activity #2 Creative Writing THE SOLOMON RAVEN SERIES Have children write a paragraph or an essay about their favorite season. Have them describe their favorite activities during that season using aspects of the particular season (such as snow in winter, hot days in summer, etc.) as a basis for their activity. [Example Winter is my favorite season. The snow gets deep. We build snow forts and snowmen. It is very cold in winter. The ice in our pond freezes. We ice skate on the frozen pond.] Activity #3 Solar System Mobile Materials Needed Graduated sizes of styrofoam balls to represent the planets String Wire Metal Hanger Directions Attach balls to strings and hang from a wire circle. Attach wire circle with more string to both ends of a wire clothes hanger. Hang mobile from ceiling hook to achieve a spinning effect. Activity #4 Personal Solar System Hold a flashlight above a globe. Pretend your flashlight is the Sun. Slowly move and spin the globe around the flashlight. Shine the flashlight on your globe as it spins. The part of the Earth that is getting the most light is indicative of the summer season.
