Wayne State University: at Wayne State (SC0011633) Belle Physics Final Report, January 2016 Accomplishments Goals The major goals of our work on Belle II were to complete our contributions, a 64 channel PIN diode based radiation monitor, to the precursor detector called Beast II and the electronics for the endcap K-Long/Muon (E-KLM) detector. This was done by Professor Cinabro, Technician Gutierrez, and undergraduate labor supported by US-Japan funds. Professor Bonvicini through US-Japan funds led the development and installation of a beamstrahlung monitor system in the Belle II interaction region. Graduate students Farhat and DiCarlo worked on this. We also worked on charm physics analysis. Accomplished The E-KLM electronics were completed in November 2014 and shipped to KEK for installation in March of 2015. We completed the PIN diode radiation monitor shipping completed analog amplifiers, long cables to the interaction region, an analog to digital patch panel, and a digital readout system to the University of Hawaii for integration tests by mid- 2015. The integrated system was shipped on to KEK in September, and has been installed in the Belle II interaction region by Nayak, who relocated to KEK then.
The beamstrahlung system was constructed at Wayne State and shipped to KEK in July of 2015. It was installed by Bovicini and DiCarlo in August of 2015 and is ready for first beams in February 2016. Ganguly completed her PhD thesis on rare D decays and graduated in June 2014. The paper on that analysis has been published and appears in our list of journal publications indicated by a *. PI Cinabro, Professor Bonvicini, and Nayak, have all continued to contribute to Belle physics analysis as internal reviewers of analysis and paper drafts in charm physics. Training and Professional Development Ganguly took a post-doc job at the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana working in particle physics. Bonvicini was her advisor. Farhat completed his PhD thesis on the system and graduated in August of 2014. Bonvicini was his advisor. Farhat now works at Ford Motor as systems analyst. Nayak is the leader of the Beast II effort at KEK where efforts are now focused on in situ calibration and integrating the Beast II readout with the SuperKEKB control and monitor system. DiCarlo is continuing as a PhD candidate at Wayne State. Dissemination of Results Cinabro and Nayak are working with our collaborators on a Belle Note documenting the Beast II system that we plan to turn into a publication.
Bonvicini and DiCarlo are doing the same documenting the beamstrahlung system. Products Only listed are published journal articles. The * indicates the publication related to Ganguly's thesis. These include the development of a cheap robust ionizing radiation monitor system in partnership with commercial manufacturing company, Cremat Inc. Professor Cinabro worked closely with Cremat in producing a multichannel system that is new to their product line, and is now being sold to the general public. The beamstrahlung monitor system has the potential to transform the optimization of delivered luminosity in particle factories.
