Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society Established 1951 Helping You to Become a Better Grower February 2010 SCVOS Newsletter (please note that links in electronic copies are functional Speaker Notes The speaker on February 3 rd will be Ken Jacobsen, who will present on some recent cym hybrids he s bloomed. Ken is a hybridizer in his spare time, and some of his plants are now beginning to bloom. He will share with us some of the excellent, not-so-excellent, and unexpected results of some of his crosses. I think there s not a better opportunity to learn about orchids than to see many of a certain grex in flower at once, and that s exactly what Ken will show. In addition, he will share with us some tricks and tips to display orchids to best effect at shows, and he should know, having won major awards at both San Francisco and Santa Barbara shows in the last few years. Ken was first introduced to orchids by his uncle in the 1960 s and has been growing Cymbidiums himself for over 35 years. Over time, he has added the Odontoglossum alliance plants and several other genera. Since his wife Amy joined in his orchid addiction, they now also raise Cattleyas and Laelias, Lycastes, Encyclias, Vandas, and Masdevallias. Together they even have a few Disas! Their collection now numbers about 2700 Cymbidiums, and about another 2500 of the other genera. Ken is an accredited judge in the AOS judging program, and an accredited judge with the CSA judging program. He has written many articles for the CSA Journal, and is now their Judging Chair (for the entire Cymbidium Society of America!!). Ken s presentation will share with us the very best of what s going on with backyard cymbidium breeding. If you d like to go to dinner with Ken, please call or email me. Pinocchio, a primary cross of Paph. primulinum and Paph. glaucophyllum. What interesting about this cross is that all Paph. Pinocchio should be pink, despite being made with a yellow primulinum. Yellow is recessive in paphs, so all the first generation of a cross like this is pink. When the pink generation (called F1) is sibbed to each other, some of the resulting progeny will be yellow. This is called the F2 generation; in Paph. Pinocchio, it s very evident that sometimes the most interesting results of a cross will only be seen in the F2 generation. This is the approach often taken in paph breeding with albino species by crossing an albino with a regular form, you get a generation of F1 that is all colored, and called heterozygous for color. Then you cross F1, and get approximately 25% albinos in the F2 generation. Sound interesting? We could have a genetics speaker if you want just email me and let me know. I m still looking for a few months speakers this year, so if you have a preference, speak up!! 2
And here s the whole table (or ½ the show and tell); what a great table you provided for January; it s too bad it took so long to present. You can see lots of paphs and cyms it s that time of year! Nice pic Dave! Susan also sent in this Paph. insigne v. sanderianum, the true alba of this species. I thought this was a particularly interesting clone very lightly colored and almost white. I haven t seen a clone of insigne this color before all the albas I have are quite a bit greener. I liked especially to see an alba and a normal colored insigne on the table last month. Thanks to Susan and Ed Nazzal for bringing them in. Tom Bailey brought in some great plants for the show and tell table in January, two of which were beautiful little mini-catts. I just love seeing more than one of the same clone, especially in terms of education in things I don t grow myself. Thanks for bringing them in Tom!! Photo by Dave Smitt. Another gem from the opportunity table, this is Laelia anceps, perhaps the single best orchid for growing outdoors in the Bay Area. This is Ed Nazzal s plant, which he grows outside, and is typical of the guerro form of anceps, which is smaller, darker, and more rounded than the standard form. The colors on this plant are just fantastic thanks for bringing it in Ed! I hope that everyone in our society has at least one plant of Laelia anceps it s easy to grow, easy to bloom, and comes in a huge variety of color forms. In Santa Barbara, anceps has been linebred to the point of perfection by both Cal- Orchid and Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, both of which can provide you with an anceps if you don t have one yet. In addition, this rampant grower is easy to divide, so if you want one, ask around in the society and I m sure someone will help you out. Thanks to Dave for the pic. 3
Upcoming Events Well Paph Guild was wonderful thanks to SCVOS members Celeste Quarrey, Peter Brown, and Oliver Colmenar for joining Kate and I down there. There were some fantastic lectures on a range of topics, including Phrag kovachii hybrids, breeding at Krull-Smith, and breeding at the Orchid Zone. So many great pictures, I mostly forgot to take any! Here are the few we did take: Lastly, this is our speaker Norito Hasegawa from Paphanatics, who spoke to us on the Parvisepalum group of paphs, including species and hybrids, and how to grow them. Parvis are a great group, and, based on the enthusiasm for the opportunity table you all showed, hopefully you all have a few parvis to play around with and share with us in the months to come. With so many plants blooming, please share something of yours with the other members; let s make these next newsletters amazing and full of your fantastic images. Future Speakers March 3 rd : Anna Purificacion In March we have a rare treat brought to us by the combined efforts of the massive POE and our members Peter Brown and Oliver Colmenar. They have some excellent contacts with Philippine growers, and Anna is one of them. She s coming to share with us the beauty of orchids of the Philippines, including many natives for the opportunity table. With such a wonderful number of genera native to the Philippines, this presentation should offer something for everyone (even me there s lots of paphs from there!!) See you there! Me and Oliver and Peter at the banquet. There s a show associated with the Paph Guild meeting, that historically has been really big. This year it was not, and I brought more plants than anyone else, although they were a far cry from the nicest plants there. There were no other big displays, but I saw a few things that I really liked, especially a little red cross that I thought had great potential. In any event, here s my little contribution: 4
It s not great but it was fun!! You should go to Paph Guild next year maybe it can be an SCVOS event!! What are you going to do in the months to come? To continue our list from last month, I ll put out a few more things to do in the months to come. We re in show season look at the calendar so pick something to do, since there are new events every week! Here s some information about each one of them (in chronological order so you don t miss anything): Pacific Orchid Exposition This show, put on by the fine folks of the San Francisco Orchid Society, is probably the premier orchid show on the West Coast. Boy I hope a bunch of you are planning on going to it attendance to this alone counts towards your Dance Card. There are spectacular displays, lots of big vendor participation, vendors from all states and countries and tons of good society friends to talk with about orchids. I think one of the things that stands out the most for me are the beautiful Wardian Cases that Andy s Orchids always makes little slices of orchid heaven, showing off little tiny species that I love to see (in other people s collections!!). What a wonderful opportunity to learn and share about orchids. In addition to the normal show, there is a pre-party that s great fun to attend as well tickets are a little pricey, but you get to go to the show early when everything is all fresh and nice. We enjoy the chance to get all dressed up and fancy and mingle with all the rich people and taste wine. What fun!! Please make plans to be there. Sonoma Orchid Society Show Napa Valley Orchid Society Show I ve never been to either of these, but from the number and quality of the awards granted at each, it seems like a very interesting and exciting prospect. Maybe I ll try to make it to this year s events. Even if the shows aren t great, there are a number of fantastic vendors up there: Raymond Burr Estate (and wine!!), Vintage Orchids, and a few others some of our previous bus tour visits Going to a show and then going and visiting growers always makes events that much more fun. Hopefully you can spare the time to attend!! Perhaps most importantly, the 59 th Annual Clara Valley Orchid Society Show and Sale will occur on March 26 th -28 th, 2010 at Westgate Mall in San Jose. As you clear your schedules for the upcoming months,, remember there are four ways you can contribute to the success of the show: 1. Bring plants to the show. This is the single most important thing you can do, and I will figure out a way to try to get all of you as involved in this as possible, even if I have to come to your house myself to get your plants. You can bring one, or you can bring a whole exhibit. Show & Tell is one of the best parts of the monthly meetings; think about the show as a big Show & Tell. The more plants that are entered, the more people will enjoy the show. Remember that you may put in an exhibit individually or with a friend or two; exhibits are wonderful ways to display your creativity! I would like to thank Eanghak Quach, Ann Stuart, Angelic Nguyen, Tanya Lam, and Peter Brown & Oliver Colmenar for agreeing to put in displays this year, and encourage others to volunteer as well. Remember if you enter a display, you ll have the opportunity to win the coveted ODC Trophy for best non-commercial display, the top honor the AOS awards to this type of show. If you re not interested in having your plants judged, you can always just bring them in with Display Only labels on them that way you don t have to fill out any paperwork or worry about competing. Please, please bring in plants!! Due to a number of members who ve moved during the last years, this year it s more important than ever to bring plants and lots of them. Entering plants in the 5
show, whether for judged display or not, earns you points towards your Dance Card total! 2. Sell plants at the show. Also, buy plants at the show. Your sales plants and your purchases help support the various functions of our society, including our wonderful monthly programs, the raffle, and our show itself. Some people mentioned they d like the ability to sell more plants at the show this year, so your show committee is committed to leaving plenty of space for those of you who d like to sell plants to do so. In addition you can buy the plants you want as well. As an added bonus, you can request plants for the society to buy by filling out a space on the board passed around at the meetings. Remember that learning about a new genus contributes to your total for the 2009 Dance Card! 3. Volunteer your time at the show. The show is completely volunteer-run, and we need lots of help!! You can find out how and where to help out on the show schedule at the end of the newsletter. Please volunteer early and often; you ll get the first shot at seeing sale plants, and you ll have an opportunity to meet lots of other members. In addition, we ve changed the timing of judging to a Friday night, and SCVOS President Bruce Davidson has organized some wine tasting for that Friday night, so if you d like to drink wine and look at pretty orchids, be sure to volunteer on Friday night. (Besides of course we ll need a ton of help trying to do everything that much faster!!) Have a look at the volunteer jobs listed in the show information below, and choose one to your liking. You can email me you re your choice of job and time, or of course with any questions about volunteering. Volunteering at the show adds points to your Dance Card goal for the year! 4. Lastly, attend the show. And bring friends!! You ll be amazed by the beauty of what you and your friends here in the society have grown; maybe they ll even join the society themselves. In any case, they (and you) will probably leave the show with a plant or two. Please see below to find information pertaining to selling plants at the show, including rules inventory blanks, and price tags. These items will be available at the monthly meeting as well. Be sure to get these and all other show information filled out in advance. it helps greatly to not have to worry about filling out paperwork at the show itself. Remember that the annual show provides support for our guest speakers, the holiday party, the bus tour and monthly meetings. This show goes a long way towards making your experience at the SCVOS as good as it can possibly be. The wonderful speakers, many from other areas of the US or abroad, are paid for with money earned at the show through your help, volunteering, and support. The fantastic Holiday Party is supplemented by income generated by the show. Most importantly, bring as many flowering plants as possible, as the sight and fragrance is spectacular for the general public and helps to promote sales and interest in orchids. Begin surrounded by knowledgeable folks at the SCVOS show is one of the best ways to learn more about orchids and become a better grower. Remember your involvement in the show counts towards the Dance Card!! I hope to see you there!! The Jardìn Botànico las Orquìdeas is a small botanical reserve located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, on the outskirts of the growing city of Puyo. The reserve was founded 30 years ago by an Ecuadorian family, and has been restored from a denuded pasture to a healthy secondary forest, complete with more than 250 species of orchids from Ecuadorian cloud forest and rainforest. Recently the number of birds and mammals such as monkeys, sloths, guatusas, and anteaters visiting the reserve has significantly increased; however, the reserve is too small to provide a permanent habitat. Neighboring land to the orchid reserve, a potential corridor between the reserve and the lower Rio Puyo watershed, is currently for sale. The land is 25 hectares (61.78 acres) for $250,000 US dollars (Ecuador's currency is the US dollar). Currently looking for $125,000.00 in donations with the rest to come in matching funds. The land is owned by one family and currently used for agriculture, and if not purchased soon, the owner has plans to subdivide into housing lots. The danger of the land going to housing will increase as the road bordering the land is going to be paved. The Orchid and Botanical Garden is interested in purchasing the land outright or in some kind of partnership purchase with the local government, another NGO, or private donor(s). The Jardìn Botànico Las Orquìdeas would then assume the work of restoring the land to forest, applying techniques and lessons learned from the past 30 years of restoration. This new land presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to capitalize on a generation`s worth of ecological restoration, and provide crucial habitat for generations to come. OCA is interested in helping to provide funding for the purchase price of this land. So what can you do to help? Orchid Facts Some random Orchid Facts this month: The largest genera of orchids are as follows: Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species). The following list gives a rough overview of their distribution: Tropical America: 250 to 270 genera Tropical Asia: 260 to 300 genera Tropical Africa: 230 to 270 genera Oceania: 50 to 70 genera Europe and Asia: 40 to 60 genera North America: 20 to 25 genera The biggest orchid plant is Grammatophyllum speciosum. It can be found in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Moluccas, the Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Bismarck Islands, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Its pseudobulbs could grow to a length of 2.5 meters (more than 8 feet). In December 2009, scientists announced the accidental discovery of an orchid measuring a little over 2 millimeters (0.08 inch) in Ecuador. Said orchid was growing in the roots of another orchid, collected for study. It belongs to the Platystele genus. - Oliver Colmenar Something I wish I had: Paph. Award Judging entries, must be presented to the entry clerk in the mall between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM on March 26 th. Entry forms will be available from the entry clerk or at SCVOS meetings two months prior to the show. Any entry presented after 7:00 PM will not be accepted. Judging will be at 7:30 PM on Friday, March 26 th. All entries must be removed at 5:00 PM Sunday, March 28 th. Plants submitted for A.O.S. judging only shall be on display for the length of the show, and may be removed on Sunday, March 28 th at 5:00 PM. At the discretion of the judges, First, Second, and Third place ribbons will be awarded in all classes in all sections, based on the standards of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Only entries which are correctly labeled and completely entered for ribbon judging will be considered. Any plant infested with insects, or diseased, will be removed from the show. No plant may be entered for ribbon or trophy judging unless it has been owned and grown by the exhibitor for six months. Plants entered for A.O.S. judging are governed by the A.O.S. rules. The S.C.V.O.S Show is an A.O.S.-sanctioned show. The A.O.S. rules state: "All plants or flowers submitted at a regional judging session or exhibited at an A.O.S.- sanctioned show shall be considered for an award and the exhibitor is obligated to accept and pay the fee for any (A.O.S) award granted except where he has clearly indicated before the judging that his entry is not to be A.O.S. judged. An exhibitor may not specify what award he will accept." Entries for display only, not to be judged, should be clearly labeled as such. Any photographer s fees will be the responsibility of the exhibitor. Meristem and stem propagated plants are not considered seedlings. 1 A commercial grower is one who derives a substantial part of one s income from the sale of orchids. Copy plant titles from entry slip into show spreadsheet. Use MS Excel quickly and efficiently. Entry: Examiner Verify classification of plants entered before entry clerk enters plant in spreadsheet. Reclassify plants as necessary. Assist exhibitors in finding proper classification. Plant Sales: Cashier Stay near cash box and plant sales tables. Collect money, make change. Place stickers on plants which have been purchased. Box plants which have been purchased. Collect member sales receipts. Plant Sales: Advanced Grower Answer questions and advise regarding orchids. You are the advanced grower of the hour. People with questions they cannot answer about orchid growing will be directed to you for answers. Plant Sales: Salesperson Be aware of the sales inventory. Help customers find the plants they want. Answer customer questions about orchids. Invoice the customers by writing up a sales tag for plants they wish to purchase. Host or Hostess Watch plants and guests to see that no plants are taken. Answer questions. Stand or sit near the plants. Potting Demonstrators Bring your own plants, tools, and potting materials. Demonstrate appropriate potting technique. Answer questions. Ribbon Clerk Accompany judges with the judging spreadsheet. Record awards. Place ribbons. Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society 2010 Annual Show Sales Rules and General Information To ensure that our show runs as smoothly as possible, the board has set into place the following rules concerning the sale of member plants: 1. Members may bring a maximum of 50 plants for the sale and requests to exceed 50 plants shall be approved by the Show Chair. 2. Plants are to be relinquished to the Show Chairman or Sales Committee Chairman upon submission and will be placed for sales at the discretion of those persons alone. Members may not place plants on the sales table; this will avoid conflicts and maximize the attractiveness of the sales display. 3. Member sales plants shall be priced at whole dollar amounts with the plant owner receiving 75% of the displayed prices, and the society 25%. Sales tax shall be added to the displayed value for purchaser s payments. 4. Members shall provide a master list of plants checked-in for sale. It is advisable to have a second copy for record-keeping at the discretion of the member. 5. Members shall provide a detachable label with the owner ID and sale price on each plant. Label blanks may be found below and will be provided at the monthly meetings for the two months prior to the show. 6. Unsold member plants may be checked out and removed only after closing on the final day. 7. Member s checks shall be based on the removable tags accumulated sale price, and lost tags are not the responsibility of the SCVOS. Each member selling plants assumes risk of such tags, and unless the member can indisputably verify the sale occurred, there will be no reimbursement to the member. 8. Above rules shall be accepted upon submitting plants for sale and plant ID list. If there are questions or concerns pertaining to these rules, please address them to me by phone or preferably email.
