ECOLOGY Physical Science BIOTECHNOLOGY Biology COMPARATIVE ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Grade: 10, 11, 12 Biology with C or better CHEMISTRY 1 Science Lab Skills Or Algebra I OR Algebra: C&S 10 th grade with teacher recommendation Ecology is an elective science course for students who are interested in taking an additional science course. It explores how living things interact with their environment. Students will also learn the enormous impact humans have on the planet. Topics covered: pond ecology, insect classification, relationships between organisms, energy flow, cycling of matter, ecosystems, population dynamics, biodiversity, threats to the biosphere Course #: 218 Biotechnology is an elective science course for students who are interested in taking an additional science course. It is designed to immerse students in the rapidly changing and controversial field of biotechnology using labs, discussions, and debates. Topics covered: current biotechnology laboratory techniques, biotechnology in industry, DNA and cells, microbiology, animal and plant tissue culturing, stem cell research, bioethics (including discussion and debate) Course #: 220 Comparative Anatomy and Physiology is an elective science course for students who are interested in taking an additional science course. It is designed for students who intend to take Anatomy and Physiology Courses at a college or technical school level. Students will learn basic structures and functions of several animals. Topics Covered: cells, tissues, organs and systems of mammals, birds, and other members of the animal kingdom, comparison of animal structures and functions. Course #: 228 Chemistry 1 is for students who have difficulty with mathematics and plan to attend a university or technical college. It outlines the same topics as Chemistry, only at a slower pace. Students with average or above average math ability or with career plans having a science emphasis should take Chemistry instead. Topics covered: matter, atomic theory, periodicity, inorganic nomenclature, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, ideal gases, solutions, acids and bases Course #: 410226 Last updated 12/12/11

COLLEGE CREDIT CHEMISTRY LECTURE 0.8 Credit COLLEGE CREDIT CHEMISTRY LABORATORY 0.2 Credit Fee Required Chemistry OR Chemistry 1 with instructor consent and Overall GPA 3.0 or higher and Acceptable score on entrance exam ADVANCED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH Grade: 11, 12 Biology College Credit Chemistry is the equivalent of Chemistry 211 and Chemistry 213 at UW-GB. Students who successfully complete the courses according to UW-GB standards earn 5 college credits at UW- GB (4 lecture/1 laboratory). These two courses must be registered for simultaneously. The course fee is approximately $550, but the exact tuition is not determined until late summer. The first half of tuition is due by June 1 st and the balance is due September 15 th. Topics covered: chemical foundations, atomic structure, molecules and ions, stoichiometry, reaction types, gases, thermo-chemistry, bonding, liquids and solids, solution chemistry Course #: 410254 & 410255 Last updated 10/22/09 Headed to college for a science career? Do you love science and math? Would you like to compete for scholarships and prizes? This course is designed to lead students to prepare a research project to enter in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) competition. The regional ISEF competition is held each year at Lakeland College in February and winners of this competition win a trip to the National competition in California to compete for a scholarship. Students will use class hours to research, design, and execute an inquiry based project. The project requires students to design and complete an experiment investigating a research area of their choice. To report their results, students must keep a data notebook for the semester, write an abstract and research paper, create a presentation board per specifications, and complete an interview at the competition explaining their research.
