About this course Continuation of Calc I and II. Trigonometry is an essential component of this class. Short overview of topics: parametrization, polar coordinates, vector analysis, derivatives and integration in higher dim. Connections will be made to Physics whenever appropriate. For a complete list of topics, refer to the syllabus. Multivariable Calculus 5 / 21

Learning Outcomes Handle vectors fluently in solving problems involving the geometry of lines curves, planes and surfaces in space. Visualize and draw graphs of surfaces in space. Differentiate and integrate in multivariable settings. Be able to handle optimization problems in multivariable settings Multivariable Calculus 6 / 21

Why is this course important? Multivariable Calculus is extremely important. Used to understand motions of stars and galaxies. Used in Tomography, 3D scans, Robotics, Computer games. Making of movies such as Avatar and many video games requires a strong understanding of multivariable concepts. Multivariable Calculus 7 / 21

Exams and Quizzes Three exams Exams are timed (50 min) Closed books No cheat sheet No formula sheet Study guides will be given prior to each exam We will have review sessions 15 min quizzes About every other week Quizzes will be timed! No cheat sheet No formula sheet Multivariable Calculus 8 / 21

Policy for missing exams and quizzes There will be no makeup exams unless you miss a class because of unwanted reasons such as a documented illness or the death of a family member. Provided you have documentation, the final exam grade will be used to replace the missing test. Multivariable Calculus 9 / 21

Classroom rules Cell phones or laptops should not be out in class Texting in class or using your laptop in class in not acceptable Come to class, listen, learn and ask questions This class is for you, make the best of this experience! Multivariable Calculus 10 / 21

Academic Honesty The academic integrity policy of Bridgewater State University will be strictly enforced. This policy can be found in the BSU Student Handbook. Multivariable Calculus 11 / 21

Accommodations If you have a health condition or learning disability which may require accommodations in order to successfully complete this course, please contact Disability Services Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action. In compliance with Bridgewater State University and equal access legislation, I am available to discuss appropriate accommodations that you may have as a student with a disability. Students are encouraged to register with Disability Resources Office in Boyden Hall for disability verification and determination of academic accommodations Multivariable Calculus 12 / 21

About your grades 3 Exams 40% Quizzes 20% Attendance 5% Group project (one) 5% Final Exam 30% Multivariable Calculus 13 / 21

Your grade e 94-100 A 90-93 A- 87-89 B+ 83-86 B 80-82 B- 77-79 C+ 73-76 C 70-72 C- 60-69 D 0-59 F ( ) ( ) ( 40 20 5 + q + a 100 100 100 = 1 20 a + 3 10 f + 1 20 p + 1 5 q + 2 5 e. ) + p ( ) ( ) 5 30 + f 100 100 Multivariable Calculus 14 / 21

How is your grade computed? Example Suppose Then a = 90, f = 82, p = 85, q = 92, e = 75. 1 20 a + 3 10 f + 1 20 p + 1 5 q + 2 5 e = 1 20 (90) + 3 10 (82) + 1 20 (85) + 1 5 (92) + 2 5 (75) = 327 81. 75. 4 You corresponding grade would be B. Multivariable Calculus 15 / 21

What do I need on the final to get x in this course? Example Suppose you have a = 83, p = 75, q = 88, e = 69 and you want to know what grade you need on the final in order to get at least A. Solving the inequality 1 20 (83) + 3 10 f + 1 20 (75) + 1 5 (88) + 2 (69) 90 5 gives f 123 which is not possible since f is an element of the closed interval [0, 100]. Multivariable Calculus 16 / 21

Example (A formula) In general if you are aiming for at least x you need f 10 3 x 1 6 p 2 3 q 1 6 a 4 a 8e p 4q + 20x e =. 3 6 Multivariable Calculus 17 / 21

My two cents Math 261 is and has always been a hard class. You will need to know Trigonometry very well (see handouts). We have a lot of materials to cover (see syllabus) In order to obtain (deserve) a good grade, you must also work really hard. There is not substitute for good old hard work. I recommend that you spend at least 8 hours per week studying for this class. In order to do well in mathematics (or anything in fact) you must practice (do your homework) You should first work out problems on your own and then discuss with your peers. Take advantage of my office hours. Multivariable Calculus 18 / 21

My other two cents (four cents in total) I will help you and I will support you. I am on your team! However, you are responsible for your own learning. Come to class (do not miss). Pay attention, ask questions. Have a positive attitude. Respect the class, your peers and the instructor. Multivariable Calculus 19 / 21
