The Five Themes of Geography Main Idea: Geographers use the Five Themes of Geography to help them study the Earth.

The Five Themes of Geography Geography and You: Suppose a teacher tells you to pick a topic for a research paper how do you organize your ideas? Lets look into how a geographer uses themes to help organize ideas about the planet.

The Five Themes of Geography Geography is the study of the Earth and its people.

The Five Themes of Geography Individuals who study geography are called Geographers

The Five Themes of Geography Geographers use five different themes, or topics, to describe places and people. These themes are location, place, human environmental interaction, movement and region.

Location Theme # 1 Location Location is the position of a place on the Earth s surface. Where is North Plainfield located??.

Location Where is the Grand Canyon located? Specifically its located in state of Arizona

Location Mount Fuji is specifically located in Japan.

Location There are Two Types of Location. 1) Absolute Location 2) Relative Location

Location Absolute Location Is the exact spot on Earth, where a geographical feature, such as a city or mountain, is found. Example Where are you right now exactly?

Location North Plainfield Middle School, North Plainfield, NJ, 07069, Room 212

Location Relative Location Describes where that feature is in relation to the features around it. Example What town and state are you guys currently located in?

Location North Plainfield in New Jersey kind of in the middle on the east coast of the United States

LOCATION Challenge What building is this?? Where is it located?

LOCATION Challenge Absolute Location: It s located on the western side of the city of Rome on the IV Templum Pacis road. Relative Location: The relative location of the Coliseum is Rome, Italy.

Place Theme # 2 Place Place Describes the characteristics of a location that make it unique, or different. (Paris is know for its food and museums)

Place A place can be defined by physical features, such as landforms, plants, animals and weather patterns. Other characteristics of a place describe the people who live there, such as the language they speak. (What country and city are these pictures from)

Place London Capital City of England Home of the Queen of England.

Movement Themes # 3 Movement Movement Explains how and why people, ideas and goods move from place to place.

Movement For example, people might leave a country that is involved in a war. Such movements can lead to great cultural change.

Regions Theme # 4 Regions Regions Refers to areas of the Earth s surface that have several common characteristics, such as land, natural resources, or population.
