Data Sheet SP-700 Free Chlorine Analysis TMB Method The Pyxis SP-700 free chlorine method is based on the USEPA-accepted tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) chemistry for free chlorine analysis. The solidified reagent deposited inside a capped 2-ml disposable pipette contains TMB, a ph buffer, and a polymeric binder. When a water sample is withdrawn to the pipette, the TMB reagent dissolves and reacts with free chlorine in the sample to form a yellow solution. The SP-700 measures the absorbance value of the resulted yellow solution to determine the free chlorine concentration in the sample. Effective 11/1/2017 all SP-700 units will come preprogrammed with the TMB Free Chlorine method. For units purchased prior to this date, Pyxis offers an online firmware upgrade free of charge to enable your SP- 700 to run this test. The procedure for upgrading your SP-700 unit is included in page 6 of this document. Test Procedure Video Instructions LINK Via YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyhbepzdixa Free Chlorine Measure Procedure : SP-700 1. Click >> button (labeled with >), until the caption of the left button (labeled with <) becomes COLOR, click the COLOR button to launch chlorine measurement page as Fig 1. Fig 1. Chlorine measurement 2. Triple rinse the sample cell of the SP-700 with the sample to be measured.
3. Fill the sample cell with the water to be measured. 4. Click Zero button (labeled with <) Fig 2. Chlorine Zero 5. Draw out sample water from the sample cell into the reagent pipette. Once the sample has been drawn into the reagent pipette, shake the pipette or squeeze the sample back into the sample cell several times allowing the reagent to fully dissolve. You should notice a color if free chlorine is present. 6. Click Timer button (labeled with >), the SP-700 start 2-minute counter down timer
7. The SP-700 will continuously display the free chlorine concentration, click the Stop button (labeled with >) to stop measurement if the real-time readings remain steady or you may wait for the 2-minute timer to end. RECORD FINAL VALUE as ppm FREE CHLORINE Free Chlorine Calibration Procedure : Pre-Step Click >> button (labeled with >), until the caption of left button (labeled with <) becomes COLOR, click the COLOR button to launch chlorine page Reagent Blank (Zero) Calibration 1. Fill the sample cell with DI water 2. Click Zero button (labeled with <) 3. Draw out DI water from the sample cell into the reagent pipette, shake the pipette to fully dissolve the reagent before squeezing the water sample in the pipette back to the sample cell 4. Click Timer button (labeled with >), the SP-700 will start the 2-minute timer. 5. The SP-700 will continuously display the free chlorine concentration, please click the Stop button (labeled with >) to stop measurement if the real-time readings remains steady or wait for the 2-minute timer to time out. 6. Click the Cal button (labeled with >) to launch chlorine calibration page
Figure 4. Blank Calibration 7. Click Blank button (labeled with <) to start blank calibration. 8. Blank calibration succeeds will be displayed if blank calibration completed. 9. Long press Default (labeled with OK) to return to chlorine page. Slope Calibration 1. Fill the sample cell with known free chlorine standard solution. 2. Click Zero button (labeled with <). 3. Draw the standard solution from sample cell into the reagent pipette, shake the bottle to fully dissolve the reagent before squeezing the reacted sample back into the sample cell. 4. Click Timer button (labeled with >), on the SP-700 to start the 2-minute timer. 5. The SP-700 will continuously display the free chlorine concentration, please click the Stop button (labeled with >) to stop the measurement if the real-time reading remains steady or wait for 2-minute timer to complete. 6. Click Cal button (labeled with >) to launch chlorine calibration page. 7. Click Slope button (labeled with >) to launch slope calibration. 8. Click + button (labeled with <) or button (labeled with >) to adjust free chlorine solution concentration to the target value of the standard used in this procedure
Fig 5. Slope Calibration 9. Click Calib button (labeled with OK) to complete slope calibration. 10. Slope calibration succeeds will be displayed if slope calibration completed. 11. Long press Calib (labeled with OK) to return to chlorine page. Note: Free Chlorine Calibration Standard Solution concentration should be within 1.1 to 2.2 ppm for proper calibration.
FIRMWARE UPDATE for SP-700 to ADD TMB Free Chlorine Test This document describes procedures to upgrade SP-700 firmware via upyxis software over Bluetooth interface. Each SP-700 comes from Pyxis with a Bluetooth adapter for use in your PC/Laptop. This device enables wireless communication from your PC/Laptop to the SP-700 for data transfer and is essential in installing firmware upgrades. If you have lost your Bluetooth adapter, contact Pyxis to receive a replacement at order@pyxis-lab.com Terminology Terminology upyxis Software Description PC software to upgrade and configure SP-700 BTLE Bluetooth Low Energy Revision Component Revision upyxis Software 0.9.31 SP-700 Firmware 1.4.0r230 Download Links upyxis Software: http://www.pyxis-lab.com/resource/software_driver/upyxis_0.9.31.zip SP-700 Firmware: http://www.pyxis-lab.com/firmware.html Note: Click the Download link in the Firmware Download page and save SP700_v1.4.0r230.bin file to your computer.
SP-700 Firmware Upgrading Procedure Click the OK button while holding the LEFT button (labeled with <) to turn the SP-700 on. The SP-700 bootloader starts running and the following screen displays Click the MIDDLE button (labeled with >) to start SP-700 Bluetooth interface, and the following screen displays
Plug in Bluetooth USB adapter to your computer, and launch upyxis software, according to Fig 8. upyxis software will automatically scan and find the SP-700 device. 8 Click the Connect button to connect with the SP-700, Fig 9 displays when the upyxis software has connected to the SP-700 successfully.
Click the Load File button to locate the SP700_v1.4.0r230.bin firmware file saved in the local computer, and then click the Update button to start upgrading the SP-700 meter. It takes about 3 minutes to complete the procedure. Fig 10 displays the upgrading process Once the upgrading procedure is completed, the SP-700 meter will reboot automatically. Your SP-700 is now capable of being used to conduct Free Chlorine TMB method using the procedures found earlier in this document.
