lbany Rifle and Pistol lub efensive Shooting iscipline Welcome to efensive Shooting at lbany Rifle and Pistol lub. This written brief is designed to give you the basic information you need to participate safely in the efensive Shooting iscipline (S) at this club. Everyone who participates in this type of shooting must read and understand the Safety portion of this brief. The efensive Shooting iscipline is open to men, women, children (if accompanied by a parent), law enforcement and military personnel. The Goals of efensive Shooting efensive Shooting is an organized shooting discipline that promotes handgun and shotgun shooting practice. Shotgun practice is optional and normally takes place at the end of the handgun exercises. Handguns and shotguns are the two types of firearms most commonly used in defensive shooting. The three main goals of the efensive Shooting iscipline are: 1. Firearm Safety 2. Organized Firearm Practice 3. Increased Firearm Skills Safety is always the first consideration when handling firearms. The way you practice is the way you react in a stressful situation and safety cannot be understated. S does not teach defensive tactics or methods used in defending yourself with a firearm. However with regular practice from realistic positions your firearm skills should improve. Safety rief lbany Rifle and Pistol lub is a cold range, which means that all firearms carried onto the property must be unloaded until you are ready to shoot on the firing line. If you carry concealed it is important to either unload before entering the club or ask the official conducting the S shooting session to help you unload and show clear (this is the preferred process). nyone carrying a loaded handgun while involved in a shooting discipline without a range officer s permission will be asked to leave the event. reaking any of the safety rules while participating in a efensive Shooting iscipline practice session will result in a disqualification (Q). participant who is Q d cannot continue to shoot in the event after being Q d. Safety rules are in place for the benefit of everyone around the event, not just the participants. Eye and ear protection must be worn at all times for both the participant and anyone watching the event. ny participant who forgets to wear eyes or ears will be stopped until such equipment can be located and put on. Failure to wear safety equipment does not disqualify a participant. Hear are the major safety rules: 1. There are only two places to handle a firearm while participating in the S practice sessions, at the firing line when the range officer directs you to and in the safety area. Handling your firearm at your car or any area other than what is mentioned above will result in a Q. 2. mmunition N be handled everywhere except for safety areas. Mixing handguns and ammunition in safety areas can lead to accidents. Handling ammunition in any safety area will result in a Q. Page - 1 Page - 2

3. When participating, you must keep you handgun pointed downrange at all times. reaking the 180 line, which is the imaginary line that is parallel to the bay building and perpendicular to the direction you are shooting, is unsafe, dangerous and will result in a Q. 4. lways keep your finger OFF the trigger until your sights are on the target. If you are riding the trigger you will be warned and if you do it continually you will be Q d. 5. ropping your handgun, while loaded, puts everyone in danger and will result in a Q. 6. Sweeping your body with the barrel of any loaded gun is a safety violation and will result in a Q. This concludes your safety briefing. If you have questions, please make sure you ask the Range Officer. The efensive Shooting Session This brief also contains the various shooting exercises that are practice. Each exercise has a written description that describes the exercise, states the start position, position of the firearm, par time for the exercise, place to record the date you shot the exercise, your overall time and any penalties. Most exercises require four rounds to complete and the entire session can normally be completed with less than 50 rounds of ammunition. S is not a shooting competition, however your shooting exercise will be timed, which adds some stress, and gives you a way to monitor your skill level. t the beginning of the session the safety rules will be read the exercises for the practice session will be announced. Normally there are four different exercises and every person shoots each exercise twice. ll exercises requiring your handgun to be holstered are shot from the concealed carry position, however some exercises may have you starting from a low ready or handgun on target position. Each exercise will be demonstrated by the Range Officer before you shoot it. If you are a new handgun shooter you are probably thinking that you need to get some practice before coming out and shooting one of these practice sessions. First, everyone has to start at some place when they are learning something new. Second, learning something new the wrong way and then re-training the right way takes twice as long as learning it the right way the first time. ad habits are hard to break. Remember, the way you practice is the way you react under stressful conditions. So come on out, start the right way and have fun practicing with other people who are also learning. Most of the time cardboard targets are used and engaged at a distance of 7 to 10 yards. These targets have multiple scoring zones ranging from 2 points to 5 points. We do not score your hits, however failure to neutralize a target, hits totaling 8 points or better, will result in a 5 second penalty. For every zone hit (center of mass) we will deduct 1 second off your time as a bonus for accuracy. Most new shooters try to shoot too fast, too soon and don t get their hits. Take your time; shoot straight and you will develop speed as you become more proficient with your handgun. The par time on the exercise is only a gauge to measure your abilities. Use the par time as a reference point and not a goal to beat. O F F I I L U S P S I P S T R G E T L I E N S E N O M G M 2 5 0 Official S Target Page - 3 Page - 4

When it is your turn to shoot, come to the firing line and listen to what the Range Officer (RO) tells you to do. Once you are ready to start the RO will give you the command to Make Ready, which means you can load your handgun and put it in the designated starting position described in the exercise. Note: If you are using a firearm that has a safety then it must be applied prior to holstering. The RO will then ask you re you ready? You can answer Yes, nod your head or simply stand still which indicates you are ready. You will then hear the command to Stand y ; at this point freeze your position. Within 3 to 4 seconds the timer will beep, at which time you start shooting. fter you are finished shooting the RO will ask you If you are finished unload and show clear. Take out your magazine or open the cylinder and show the RO that the gun is empty. The RO will then say Gun clear, hammer down and holster. Squeeze the trigger while pointing the handgun downrange to prove it is empty and holster your handgun. This last sequence gives everyone confidence that all participants have unloaded handguns when not shooting. 6. Water and/or snacks (most sessions last 2 to 3 hours) 7. lothing to handle any type of weather (most of the time we will be under cover but it does get cool or cold at times) 8. Your S booklet (downloadable from the RP website under SPORTS then under EFENSIVE HNGUN ) 9. Shotgun (this is optional as we will shoot a shotgun exercise after the handgun session is finished) and at least 25 rounds of shot (no slugs) 10. Folding chair lways go through this list before you leave your house. It is surprising how often you forget one of these items. What to ring elow is a list of items to bring to a S shooting session: 1. Safety glasses (regular eyewear or sunglasses are okay) 2. Ear protection (muffs, plugs or electronic are okay) 3. Handgun (any caliber, any type) preferably one you use for personal protection 4. oncealed holster, fanny pack or how you carry your handgun concealed 5. t least 50 rounds of ammunition Page - 5 Page - 6
