Introduction OM Engineering College has established Open Source Technologies Club (OSTC) for providing as well as utilizing benefits of latest free and open source technologies under guideline of Gujarat Technological University and Spoken tutorial at IIT Bombay. OM Engineering College have setup Open Source Technology Club before two years. We were done many activities under OSTC since starting. We have converted our whole institute in open source environment. Based on our efforts on open source technology GTU have given duties of nodal centre of OSTC for Junagadh Sankul. As a nodal centre we have done many activities to spread open source technology to different institute of Junagadh sankul. We helped many Technical and non technical colleges to setup OSTC at their campus. As part of this effort maximum institute can take benefits of our initiative and the same demanded by head of different institute, we have organized seminar on Use of Open Source Software in Academic & How to setup Open Source Technology Club (OSTC) in your Institute. We have invited about 40 colleges representative of our region to take part in this seminar. Page 4

Invitation Letter We went personally to every college of Junagadh region and some colleges of Porbandar, Amreli, Jetpur and veraval for invite the head of institute and their representative. Below is our official invitation letter which we have sent to invited colleges. Page 5

Welcome Session Welcome speech was given by Prof. I. M. Khan, Faculty from general department. He heartily welcome to all invited faculty members behalf of OM ENGINEERING COLLEGE also he gives the little introduction about department of Computer engineering of Om engineering college. He also introduces Prof.H.K.Gajera and Prof.M.D.Gundaliya to all invited faculty members as both are going to conduct seminar. Page 7

Information on Open Source Technology Prof. H.K.Gajera (Head of Computer Department) of computer engineering explains about open source technology. He also discussed benefits of open source technology over paid software. He also shared the story behind how OM Engineering College have setup 100% open source environment and inspired participant to setup open source environment at their institute. Prof. H.K.Gajera(Head of computer department) Explain all about open source technology and OSTC at OM Enginering College, Some Key points discussed by Prof. H.K.Gajera are given below: What is openness? History of Open Source Benefits of open source technology Open Source Development Model Difference between Proprietary Software and open source software Different license in software. Open source alternative of paid software. And many more about open source technology. Page 8

How to Setup OSTC at your Institute Prof. M.D. Gundaliya (Nodal Officer of OSTC Junagadh Sankul) explains about how you can setup Open Source Technology Club (OSTC) at your institute. He also gave introduction about spoken tutorial project of IIT Bombay. Prof. M. D. Gundaliya Explain about How to setup OSTC club and to take help from IIT Bombay for open source technology Some key points addressed by Prof. M. D. Gundaliya are: How to setup OSTC. Introduction about spoken tutorial. How to register with spoken tutorial. How to download training material. How to train students using training material. Get support from IIT Bombay. Page 10

BENEFITS OF THIS SEMINAR To give the brief knowledge about the open source technology to other college's faculty and encourage them to use this technology. Because of below reason: It s generally free it has been estimated that open source software collectively saves businesses $60 billion a year. It s continually evolving in real time as developers add to it and modify it. You can modify and adapt open source software for your own business requirements, something that is not possible with proprietary systems. Provide more secure environment. Availability of source code coupled with permission to make modifications; Access open source development community, which may be very active with respect to code used. Continuing improvement; outstanding development; More likely to be built to open standards, so interoperable with other open standards systems Benefits to students o Easy to do Innovation o Easy to get Training ground o Provide standard coding knowledge o Skills o Experience and Networking Page 11

CONCLUSION By conducting this Seminar, faculties got some brief ideas regarding what are the benefits of open source technology and how to use Open Source Technologies. This will be beneficial to faculties as well as students. This seminar will be helpful to other colleges faculties member and also student for improve their development skill. Around 40 college's Representative faculty members were benefited and the faculty members of Computer department has attended this Seminar and got the knowledge about the Open source Technology. Page 12

FEEDBACK After Completion the seminar our Director Prof. C. N. Jasani, Head of the Department Prof H. K. Gajera has arrange the meeting with the all the invited faculty member and take the feedback about open source technology seminar. Page 13

This is feedback given by Prof. Kalpesh, Head of the department of computer science from Shree Patel Kelavani Mandal College of Technology & B.ed, junagadh(one of the best college in junagadh). He gives very positive feedback about open source technology. Page 14

This feedback has given by Prof Jitendra head of computer science department from the G. K. & C. K. Bosamia college, Jetpur(Grate college in Jetpur). He has to need a support from our college for arrange the workshop on the open source technology for their students. Page 15

This feedback has given by Prof Jitendrakumar lecturer in science department from shree P. K. M. College of Technology & B.ed, junagadh. He has also aware their student and management comity about open source technology and establish OSTC centre at their college with the help of Om engineering college. Page 16
