Franklin Special School District FIRST GRADE: OVERVIEW The academic standards for first grade establish the content knowledge and skills for Tennessee students necessary to prepare them for the rigorous levels of higher education and future job markets. The course provides students with a wealth of scientific practical experiences. The academic standards for science in first grade are based on research and the National Research Council s Framework for K-12 Education. The academic standards herein establish the core content and practices of science and engineering, as well as what Tennessee students need to know by the end of first grade. and engineering practices are not to be taught in isolation but within the science content. Disciplinary core ideas for first grade include: First Grade Physical s (PS) Life s (LS) Earth and Space s (ESS) Engineering, Technology, and Applications of (ETS) Matter and Its Interactions From Molecules to Organisms: Structure and Process Earth s Place in the Universe Engineering Design Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics Earth s Systems Links Among Engineering, Technology,, and Society Energy Waves and Their Applications Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits Biological Change: Unity and Diversity Earth and Human Activity Applications of By the end of first grade, students encounter energy of sunlight and the effects on the earth s surface. First graders experiment with light investigations to determine how different materials interact with light. Investigating plants, parts of the plant, life cycle of plants, and interdependence of plants and the surrounding environment is an essential building block toward more complex content. Students learn about patterns in the day and night sky, that the telescope and naked eye can identify celestial objects in the sky, and the patterns of earth, moon, and sun.

First First Make observations to determine how sunlight warms Earth s surfaces (sand, soil, rocks, and water). Physical [PS] 1.PS3: Energy Textbook: energy from the Sun TN website: Engaging in Argument from Evidence materials structure sunlight observations surfaces sand soil rocks water I can make observations to determine how sunlight warms Earth s surfaces. 1.PS4: Waves and Their Application in Technologies for Information Transfer Use a model to describe how light is required to make objects visible. Summarize how Illumination could be from an external light source or by an object giving off its own light. Textbook: Behavior of Light TN website:developing and Using Models Book: Fireflies by Mary R. Dunn light beam material mirror objects shadow surface model visible summarize illumination external source light I can describe how light is needed to make objects visible. I can identify the source of light. Determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials (transparent, translucent, opaque, and reflective) in the path of a beam of light. Textbook: Behavior of Light TN website: Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions effect transparent translucent beam of light opaque reflective surface I can explain how different materials interact with light. Second Recognize the structure of plants (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) and describe the function of the parts (taking in water and air, producing food, and making new plants). Second Life [LS] 1.LS1: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes Textbook: Parts of a Plant Wonders: Unit 3 Week 2 Books: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein Apples by Gail Gibbons structure roots stems leaves taking in water producing food making new plants flowers fruits function grow I can recognize the parts of a plant and describe their functions. 3) Analyze and interpret data from observations to describe how changes in the environment cause plants to respond in different ways. Textbook: Plant Survival TN Website: Analyzing and Interpreting Data analyze observations respond interpret data environment Cause adapted plant I can observe and describe how changes in the environment affect plants. Conduct an experiment to show how plants depend on air, water, minerals from soil, and light to grow and thrive. 1.LS2: Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics Textbook: What Plants Need TN Website: Planning and Carrying out Investigations Wonders: Unit 3 Week 2 conduct experiment depend air water plant survival minerals soil light grow thrive I can conduct an experiment to show what plants need to grow. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Tyler Dewitt (Ted Talk Videos) Mystery Doug Mystery Goo.gl/hss2EY (Printable Resources 2

Second Use appropriate tools (magnifying glass, basic balance scale) to make observations and answer testable scientific questions. Engineering, Technology, and Applications of [ETS] 1.ETS2: Links Among Engineering, Technology,, and Society Textbook: Parts of a Plant magnifying glass basic balance scale I can use tools to make observations and answer questions. NOTES: ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Tyler Dewitt (Ted Talk Videos) Mystery Doug Mystery Goo.gl/hss2EY (Printable Resources 3

Third Illustrate and summarize the life cycle of plants. Obtain and communicate information to classify plants by where they grow (water, land) and the plant s physical characteristics. Third Life [LS] 1.LS1: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes Textbook: Plant Life Cycles Book: How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro illustrate summarize life cycle seed organism seedling germinate adult development 1.LS2: Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics Textbook: Plant Survival TN Website: Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information Wonders: Unit 2 Week 3 obtain communicate information classify water land physical characteristics adapted plant I can illustrate and summarize the life cycle of plants. I can gather information to determine where plants grow. 3) Recognize how plants depend on their surroundings and other living things to meet their needs in the places they live. Textbook: Animal and Plant Dependence Wonders: Unit 4 Week 3 recognize depend surroundings living needs plant animal diversity habitat I can recognize how plants meet their needs in the places they live. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Tyler Dewitt (Ted Talk Videos) Mystery Doug Mystery Goo.gl/hss2EY (Printable Resources 4

Third Solve scientific problems by asking testable questions, making short-term and long-term observations, and gathering information Engineering, Technology, and Applications of [ETS] 1.ETS1: Engineering Design Textbook: Plant Survival TN Website: Asking Questions and Defining Problems scientific problems testable questions short-term long-term I can solve problems by observing, asking questions, and gathering information. NOTES: ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Tyler Dewitt (Ted Talk Videos) Mystery Doug Mystery Goo.gl/hss2EY (Printable Resources 5

Fourth Fourth Use observations or models of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted. Earth and Space [ESS] 1.ESS1: Earth s Place in the Universe Textbook: Patterns in Space Wonders: Unit 5 Week 2 Book: The Moon Seems to Change by Franklyn M. Branley motion observations models sun moon stars patterns predicted I can predict patterns of the sun, the moon, and the stars. Observe natural objects in the sky that can be seen from Earth with the naked eye and recognize that a telescope, used as a tool, can provide greater detail of objects in the sky. Textbook: Patterns in Space observe natural sky Earth tool recognize telescope provide detail I can use tools to see objects in the sky. 3) Analyze data to predict patterns between sunrise and sunset, and the change of seasons. Textbook: Patterns of the Sun and Seasons TN Website: Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking analyze data sunrise sunset predict patterns solar system seasons daylight Earth year I can predict patterns between sunrise and sunset and the change of seasons.
