Metaplectic groups Let F be a local field of characteristic 0. The metaplectic covering is a central extension 1 μ Mp(2n, F) p Sp(2n, F) 1 with μ C finite and p continuous. More precisely, we work with a 2n-dimensional symplectic F-vector space and ψ F F C. Usually take μ = {±1}. To use the Schrödinger model, it is convenient to enlarge μ to μ 8. With μ = μ 8, the Levi subgroups are identifiable with i GL(n i ) Mp(2m, F) with i n i + m = n. There is a canonical central element above 1 Sp(2n, F), denoted again by 1. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 2 / 22

For number fields, we still have Mp(2n, A F ). Relevance of G = Mp(2n, F): 1 Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight. 2 θ-correspondence. 3 Symplectic groups and G are coupled in automorphic descent (Fourier-Jacobi coefficients). 4 It is the most accessible family of covering groups with nontrivial notions of stability and endoscopy, hence a good testing ground for Langlands program for coverings (Weissman). Notations. Let Π(H) be the admissible dual of a reductive H. Write Φ(H), etc. for the set of L-parameters. The discrete L 2 automorphic spectrum is denoted by A disc (H). Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 3 / 22

We want to understand Π ( G), the set of isomorphism classes of genuine representations of G, on which z μ C acts as z id. Guiding principle G behaves as H = SO(2n + 1) (split). The θ-correspondence for pairs (Sp(2n), O(V, q)) with dim V = 2n + 1 provides strong evidence. In particular, we take G = Sp(2n, C) = H with trivial Γ F -action. Whence the notion of L-parameters and A-parameters. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 4 / 22

Endoscopic classification for H = SO(2n + 1) The most complete results are provided by trace formula. Π temp (H) = Π φ, φ φ Φ bdd (H). The internal structure of each packet Π φ is controlled by S H φ = Z H (Im(φ)), S H φ = SH φ /Z(H ), S H φ = π 0( S H π, 1) (finite abelian). Elliptic endoscopic data are in bijection with (n, n ) with n + n = n, identifying (n, n ) and (n, n ); the corresponding endoscopic group is H! = SO(2n + 1) SO(2n + 1). Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 5 / 22

We have a Whittaker-normalized injection Π φ Irr( S φ H ), bijective for non-archimedean F. π, π. Given φ Φ bdd (H) and s Define S H φ,ss, we have an endoscopic datum determined by s, the endoscopic group H! satisfies H! = Z H (s); a factorization φ = WD F φ! H! H, φ! Φ bdd (H! ); the Whittaker-normalized transfer f f! of test functions. f! (φ, s) = f! (φ! ) = σ Π φ! f! (σ), f! (σ) = tr(σ(f! )). Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 6 / 22

The character relation is: (φ, s) as above, f! (φ, s) = s, π f (π), f (π) = tr(π(f )). π Π φ In particular, f! (φ, s) depends only on the image of s in S H φ. 1 For general A-parameters ψ, we will have to multiply s by some s ψ in. 2 Vogan packets: define Sφ H = π 0(S H φ, 1) (abelian 2-group), then π Π φ (V,q)/ Π(SO(V, q)) 1 1, π Irr(Sφ H) where (V, q) ranges over the (2n + 1)-dimensional quadratic forms with discriminant 1. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 7 / 22

Globally, given a global tempered ( generic ) discrete parameter φ and π v Π φv for all v, we have mult ( π v A disc (H)) = v { 1, v, π v { 0, otherwise. S H φ = 1, For A-parameters ψ: require v, π v S = ε φ H ψ instead, where ε ψ is defined in terms of symplectic root numbers. These results are established by a long induction using the full force of stable twisted trace formulas in [Arthur]. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 8 / 22

Back to G There is a theory of endoscopy for G (Adams, Renard,..., L.) with transfer f f! and fundamental lemma for unit. Elliptic endoscopic data are in bijection with {(n, n ) n + n = n}, the corresponding endoscopic group being G! = SO(2n + 1) SO(2n + 1). Principle: similar to H, but should disregard the symmetries from Z( G ) = {±1}. Consequence 1: (n, n ) and (n, n ) play different roles in endoscopy. Consequence 2: packets of G (say tempered) look like Vogan packets of H. As before, define S φ, S φ for parameters φ Φ( G) = Φ(H). Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 9 / 22

Non-endoscopic classification of genuine representations: local case Due to Waldspurger (n = 1), Adams-Barbasch (F archimedean) and Gan-Savin (F non-archimedean). Fix ψ F, etc. Π ( G) 1 1 Π(SO(V, q)) (V,q)/ dim=2n+1, disc=1 0 θ ψf ( π! ) π! for a unique extension π! of π! to O(V, q). This is known to preserve tempered representations, discrete series, etc. Classification of RHS into Vogan packets leads to a substitute of LLC Π ( G) = φ Φ bdd ( G) Π G φ. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 10 / 22

If π = θ ψf ( π! ) Π temp, ( G) as above, set, π Θ =, π!, a character of S φ. Then π, π Θ is a bijection ΠG φ Irr(S φ). Tempered parameters for G or H Write (φ, V φ ) as a sum of irreducible unitarizable representations of WD F : φ = ( i I + φ i I )l φ i φ i i Jφ l i (φ i φ i ), where I + φ : symplectic φ i; I φ : orthogonal φ i, with l i even; J φ : non-selfdual φ i. Hence S φ = i I + φ O(l i, C) i I φ Sp(l i, C) i Jφ GL(n i, C), and S φ = {±1} I+ φ. Same for global parameters. Discrete parameters: I φ = J φ = and l i 1. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 11 / 22

Global case: Gan--Ichino formula Choose ψ F A F /F C. For a global tempered parameter φ and s S φ,ss, define ε ( 1 2, Vs= 1 φ, ψ F ) =, say by doubling method. v Only the symplectic summands contribute, by [Lapid] or [Arthur]. The global ε( 1 2, ) is independent of ψ F and defines a character S φ {±1}. Gan Ichino: in the discrete genuine automorphic spectrum mult ( π v A disc,- ( G)) = { 1, v { v s, π v Θ = ε ( 1 2, Vs= 1 φ, ψ F ) 0, otherwise. Note. Can also formulate the case for general A-parameters. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 12 / 22

Towards the local endoscopic classification Desiderata. Character relations for G via endoscopic transfer, and description of the coefficients. Keep the notations for the case H = SO(2n + 1). Known: [f! (φ! ) = f! (φ, s)] = π Π temp, ( G) Δ(φ!, π)f (π), s S φ,ss. f : anti-genuine C c function on G that probes the genuine spectrum, and f f (π) is the character; f f! is the transfer for the endoscopic datum determined by s, it factorizes φ into φ!. RHS: virtual character with unknown coefficients. Assuming that π determines φ (LLC), we write Δ(φ!, π) = s, π. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 13 / 22

Minimal requirements. 1 When s = 1 and φ Φ bdd ( G), should have s, π {0, 1}, i.e. f! (φ, 1) = stable character on G. 2 s, π depends only on the conjugacy class of s in S φ,ss. Key property Given an elliptic endoscopic datum (n, n ) for G, denote by T (n,n ) the dual of transfer. The following commutes. {st. dist. on SO 2n +1 SO 2n +1} {genuine inv. dist. on G} swap T (n,n ) {st. dist. on SO 2n +1 SO 2n +1} {genuine inv. dist. on G} T (n,n ) translate by 1 Consequence: Assuming s 2 = 1, we have s, π = ω π ( 1) s, π. Call ω π ( 1) the central sign of π. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 14 / 22

Case study: n = 1 already have LLC for G (Waldspurger, Adams, Schultz). Let φ Φ bdd ( G) and π Π φ. Results of Gan Savin et al. imply: If π comes from SO(V, q) by θ-lifting, dim V = 3 with discriminant 1, then 1, π Θ {±1} equals the Hasse invariant of (V, q). The observation above says 1, π = ω π ( 1), which turns out to be 1, π Θ ε ( 1 2, φ, ψ F). Taking φ = φ 0 φ 0 with φ 0 φ 0, we get S φ = GL(1, C),, π Θ = 1 and 1, π = φ 0 rec F ( 1) is not always trivial. A closer look reveals that 1, π does not factor through S φ ; 2 it is even not a homomorphism in general; 3 s, π = ε ( 1 2, Vs= 1 φ, ψ F ) s, π Θ for all s S φ,ss. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 15 / 22

Global reasons: for φ Φ 2 ( G), general arguments from Arthur suggest mult ( π v A disc, ( G)) = S φ 1 v s S v φ s, π v. The local observations (n = 1 at least) + Gan Ichino formula give some support for the following. Conjecture We have LLC Π temp, ( G) = φ Φbdd ( G) Π φ with character relations. Assigning to π Π φ the coefficients, π S φ,ss C gives Π φ 1 1 Irr(S φ )ξ φ, ξ φ (s) = ε ( 1 2, Vs= 1 φ, ψ F ). Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 16 / 22

Note that 1 ξ φ is not a character of S φ, although their global product is; 2 for φ Φ 2 ( G), we can show ξ φ Irr(S φ ); 3 can formulate a version for A-packets. Refinement of the conjecture We expect, π =, π Θ ξ φ for all φ Φ bdd ( G) and π Π φ. These will completely reconcile the endoscopic and the θ-lifting descriptions for Π temp, ( G). The case of epipelagic L-packets for F Q p, p 0 seems accessible by purely local arguments [Kaletha 2015]. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 17 / 22

Strategy A template: Arthur s Endoscopic classification of representations and Unipotent automorphic representations. The proof is necessarily local-global. The case for G ought to be easier, since stable multiplicity formula for endoscopic groups are available, candidates for global parameters are already well-defined, one can resort to Gan-Ichino in local-global arguments if necessary. An important ingredient in Arthur s Standard Model : local and global intertwining relations. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 18 / 22

Take F local, fix ψ F and F-pinnings for all groups. Consider a standard parabolic P = MU G and their dual P, M G. Assume LLC, etc. for M. Take φ M Φ 2,bdd ( M) (for simplicity), π M Π φm. Let w W φ W(M) = W( M ). Let φ M φ Φ bdd ( G). Consider normalized intertwining operators of the form R P (w, π M, φ) = π(w)l(w, π M, φ)r wpw 1 P (π M, φ) I P (π M) I w Pw 1 (π M ) I P (wπ M) I P (π M). First, must lift w W G (M) to an element of G. Just use the Springer section with due care on long simple roots, eg. we want wlong 2 = 1 in Sp(2, F). Group-theoretic difficulties of this step are addressed in [Brylinski-Deligne, 2001]. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 19 / 22

R wpw 1 P (π M, φ) is the normalized intertwining operator, we can use the normalizing factors from SO(2n + 1). l(w, π M, φ) is φ φ(w 1 ) times some correction factor, again using that from SO(2n + 1)-case. Choose π(w) Isom M (wπ M, π M ): it affects only the GL-slots of π M. The resulting operator is neither multiplicative in w nor Whittaker-normalized! Denote by γ(w, φ) C the expected effect of R P (w, π M, φ), say on Whittaker functionals. See eg. Bump-Friedberg-Hoffstein (1991), Szpruch (2013). Again, local root numbers appear here (general phenomena). Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 20 / 22

Take any u N φ = N Sφ (A M ), which maps to w W φ under the natural N φ W φ. Write u = u GL u. Special case of local intertwining relation Conjecturally f! (φ, u) = f (φ, u) (see below). f (φ, u) = c(u, φ) π M, u tr (R P (w, π M, φ)ip (w, f )) π M Π φm c(u, φ) = ε ( 1 2, Vu= 1 φ, ψ F ) ε ( 1 1 2, Vu = 1, ψ φ F ) γ(w, φ) 1. This will give the, π for tempered non-l 2 packets, and much more (eg. information on R-groups). See [Arthur, Chapter 2] for full explanation. Wen-Wei Li (AMSS-CAS) Gan Ichino multiplicity formula April 14, 2016 21 / 22

The local intertwining relation is subject to global constraints. 1 v c(u, φ) v = 1 for global parameters. 2 Generalizes to A-packets. 3 Satisfy analogues of the sign lemmas in [Arthur, Chapter 4]. 4 Ultimately, we want to feed them into the Standard Model of loc. cit., and deduce all the theorems inductively. We will need the fundamental lemma for the spherical Hecke algebra of G (ongoing thesis of Caihua Luo supervised by Gan); probably also the full stable trace formula.
