Import data from non-excel sources Probe Software Web sites Other sources Organize data Structure file for analysis Clean values Analyze Summarize Statistics Graph 2

Get files from urban\public Import into excel alaska_weather. _weather.prn Date data, precipitation, percent sun, temp scale, max & min temps, location alaska_time. _time.prn Sunrise & sunset times Merge Convert all temps to same scale Find average max & min temps Graph max temp vs. amount of sunlight Add trend line and r 2 value 3

Collecting and organizing the data Summarizing and reducing the data Analyzing and presenting the data 4

Keep each field in a separate column Location Year Month Day Scale (Temperature given in C or F) TMAX24 (Daily Maximum Temperature) TMIN24 (Daily Minimum Temp) PSUN24 (Percentage of Possible Sunshine) PRCP24 (Precipitation) Save as an Excel Workbook, not text!! 5

One row / day of month with all 12 months' data across the columns Save imported data as an Excel Workbook Do not save it as a text file Copy sunrise and sunset data into WEATHER spreadsheet to right of the existing weather data for each day Two new columns: sunrise and sunset Include a label at the top of each new column 6

Compute hours:minutes of daylight for each day 7

Find formula for converting from C to F Determine which temperatures are measured in Celsius and which are measured in Fahrenheit Create one formula in the MAX TEMP F F column that converts Celsius temperatures and leaves alone temperatures already in Fahrenheit Copy this formula and paste it into the MIN TEMP F F column 8

Insert two new columns Max Temp F (right of original MAX TEMP) Min Temp F (right of original MIN TEMP) Conversion: (Temp_in_C * 1.8) + 32 Create a spreadsheet formula to do this Are your results reasonable? 0 C = 32 F 20 C = 68 F 37 C = 98.6 F 9

logical_test : Must be either True or False true_value : value displayed if test is True false_value : value displayed if False and false_value can be anything that cell can hold: text, number, formula true_value and 10

Create a new formula in an OPEN cell in one of the columns you just created Do NOT use the Function Wizard Use IF function to decide if scale is C Need to put quotes around C in the test True_value: display Temp is Celsius False_value: display Temp is Fahrenheit 11

See HELP on The Difference Between Relative and Absolute References Figure out how to create a version of this formula in cell B2 that uses Absolute Cell References Copy this formula to cells B3 through B7 and it should still work correctly 12

Create a formula that works in both MAX TEMP F and MIN TEMP F columns Test by copying this into the first 20 rows of each column Should convert both MAX and MIN temperatures 13

Complete conversion requires: Formula for converting C to F Logical function with mixed cell references Parentheses Each cell for MAX TEMP F and MIN TEMP F have correct temperature in F 14

Use HELP to learn how to use the ROUND function Modify your conversion formulas so that they use the ROUND function to display temperatures without decimal points Do NOT simply format the cells to change the display 15

Use AutoFilter to check your data Check each field for BLANKS There should not be any Find maximum and minimum values for Max Temp F and Min Temp F Is Celsius to F reasonable for these values? 16

Use the HISTOGRAM tool Specify MAX TEMP F as input range Specify the BIN range Cells with bins that are 10 degrees apart Range includes lowest minimum and highest maximum temperatures Include a meaningful label at the top Include Labels Put the output on a new Worksheet Do NOT select any other options 17

Select MIN TEMP F as input range Use same BIN range and options as before Output on same sheet as previous exercise output and to the RIGHT of that output Edit column labels and change BIN to TEMPERATURE (if you didn t do this) FREQUENCY to DAILY HIGH and DAILY LOW Create column chart from this on a new sheet 18

Create pivot table that has AVERAGE Monthly Maximum Temp in F AVERAGE Monthly Minimum Temp in F Change the type of SUMMARY to AVERAGE rather than SUM Include both temperature fields in the DATA of the pivot table Create column charts from each pivot table Click in a cell below pivot table before inserting the chart or you will not be able to specify data Do not include the TOTALS INSERT CHARTS on a NEW CHART SHEET 19

XY Scatter Chart Default format DATA Series in Columns X Values: Max Temp in F Y Values: Hrs/Min Daylight Chart name describes what you are graphing Label X-X and Y-Y axes NO legend NEW SHEET RIGHT click on datapoint ADD TRENDLINE LINEAR type OPTIONS: DISPLAY R-R squared value 20

Which data has largest R-square R value? Which data has smallest R-square R value? Which data set has strongest relationship between amount of daylight and temperature? How do you know? What factors do you think influence these relationships? 21
