SCIENCE CURRICULUM GUIDE 2016 Year 11 Autumn Students now progress with the Additional Science which they started at the end of Year 10. For this qualification they will sit a single award GCSE during Year 11. This single GCSE in Additional Science adds to the single core Science GCSE gained in Year 10 to give the students two GCSE s in science. The following units will be covered this term: B3 Living and Growing Molecules of life DNA, proteins and enzymes Diffusion Circulatory system Cell division Growth in animals and plants Using hormones to control plant growth Genetic engineering Clones C3 Chemical economics Rates of Reaction including concentration, temperature, pressure, surface areas and catalysts Reacting Masses % Yield Atom Economy Energy and chemical reactions Batch or Continuous Allotropes Of Carbon P3 Forces for Transport Speed Changing speed Forces and motion Work and power Energy on the move Crumple zones Gravity, drag and air resistance The energy of games and theme rides

Year 11 Spring The spring term of Year 11 consists of a continuation of the OCR Gateway Additional Science GCSE course. Students are now working through modules 4 in each of the areas Biology, Chemistry and Physics. B4 It s a green world Who planted that there? Water, water everywhere Transport in plants Plants need minerals too Energy flow Farming Decay Recycling C4: Periodic Table Atomic Theory Periodic Table: A History Covalent Bonding Ionic Bonding The Group 1 Group 7 Transition Metals Metals Purifying Water P4 Radiation for life Electrostatics - sparks Use of electrostatics Safe electrical Ultrasound Treatment What is radioactivity?
Uses of radioisotopes Fission Students can expect to be set a homework per week by each of their science teachers. The quantity and style of the homework is likely to suit the ability of the science set that they are in. Year 11 Summer The summer term of Year 11 consists of a continuation of the OCR Gateway Additional Science GCSE course. Students are now finishing modules 4 in each of the areas Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There will be time for some revision and past paper practise before the students leave to go on study leave. A total of all 18 units will be examined at the end of the year in June. The following units will be covered this term: B5 The living Body. Muscular skeletal System Cardiovascular system Respiratory System Digestive system Excretory System Growth Replacement surgery C5 Quantitative analysis. The mole and percentage composition Concentration and dilution ph and titrations Gas and its measurement Equilibria Strong and weak acids Testing for ions. P5 Space for reflection. Satellites Equations of motion Projectiles Actions and reactions Momentum Waves and the ionosphere Light as a wave, refraction and dispersion
