MEDIUM TERM PLANNING YR 5 Spring Term 2018 SCIENCE LO: I can explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity Gravity is the force acting between the Earth and the falling object. Push and Pull forces Change direction, start, stop and change shape. LO: I can identify and explain the effects of air and water resistance. Identify the effects of air resistance and water resistance that act between moving surfaces. Explore falling objects and raise questions about the effects of air resistance (model soldier dropped from a height how could they prevent him from being hurt chn to suggest options and COMPUTING LO: I can use excel to calculate and manipulate data. If coding wa not completed last term, this could be completed here and Excel could be pushed into the summer term. Calculate totals, percentages, produce graphs, use formulas, - use Ben s Burger Bar and the movie challenges to develop this understanding. Excel using formulas to calculate answers etc HISTORY and GEOGRAPHY LO: I can explain how early navigators explored the globe. Navigation how do sailors and pilots know where they are in the world? Discuss the use of the compass chn to understand NSEW Magellan? LO: I can explain the difference between longitude and latitude and how they work. Discuss how the world is divided in sections and lines of navigation known as latitude and longitude. Show how they start at the Greenwich Meridian Look at a selection of maps to show lines of longitude and latitude. Chn to understand how they are used. LO: I can use a six ART and DT LO: I can create a work of art based on the writings of an author (chn to create a painting or other work of art based on The Highwayman poem opening scene) MUSIC All the learning is based around the song: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the interrelated dimensions of music (pulse rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked. We are also taking part in weekly ukele lessons with an outside tutor. RE LIVING AS A BUDDHIST: DEVOTIONAL PRACTICES AND THE MIDDLE WAY Buddhist devotional practices. The Middle Way and the Noble Eightfold Path PE Indoor PE circuit around the BOX2bfit programme. Work on strength, flexibility and stamina is covered. Outdoor PE Rotation around tag rugby and football. Skills covered are spatial awareness, different types of passing, attacking and defending skills, tactical awareness. PSHE Personal goals and aspirations. )that there are different kinds of responsibilities, rights and duties at home, at school and in the community, and that these can sometimes conflict with each other. to reflect on spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues, using imagination to understand other people s experiences. That resources can be allocated in different ways and that these economic choices affect individuals, communities and sustainability of the environment. That their VISITS AND THEME DAYS

create solutions). Observe parachutes and sycamore seeds falling. LO: I can identify the effects of friction between moving surfaces Identify the effects friction that act between moving surfaces. Demonstrate that friction causes heat by rubbing hands together. Chn to experience forces that make things begin to move, get faster or slow down. Chn should investigate how friction acts to slow or stop objects moving i.e. observation of a bike brake. LO: I can identify the effect that some mechanisms have on a force. figure grid reference Chn to be taught how to use grid references (start at 4 fig then move on). Using maps (possibly digimaps if they are up and running) to find locations on a map. Using maps as a source find the key points where battles took place during the wars of the roses. Record on a blank map of the UK actions affect themselves and others, to care about other people s feelings and to try to see things from their points of view; To realise the nature and consequences of racism, teasing, bullying and aggressive behaviours, and how to respond to them and ask for help. Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. Chn should explore the effects of levers, pulleys and

simple machines on movement.

ENGLISH Reading / Writing / Spelling/ Grammar and Punctuation MATHS Including reasoning and calculation

LO: I can analyse a narrative poem. Narrative Poetry The Highwayman Share the Highwayman. Explore the language used. What feelings does the poem convey? How does Noyes use language to make the poem more exciting? Chn to explore the motivation of the individual characters. LO: I can learn and perform a narrative poem. Children to learn sections of The Highwayman and dramatise the events in it. They should then perform this as a whole class having memorised their lines. Focus on intonation, facial expression and body language GPS LO: I can identify determiners in a sentence Look at a range of determiners - definite article, indefinite article, demonstratives, possessives and quantifiers LO: I can use modal verbs in my writing Also known as auxiliary verbs show the level of possibility. i.e. I can run, I must rust, I should run Run is the main verb; can, must and should are the modal or auxiliary verbs. LO: I can use parenthesis in a sentence. LO: I can identify a suffix, a prefix and a root word. Develop understanding of these features of complex spellings. LO: I can identify and use commands in a sentence. Use a range of sentences including commands, chn to identify the command word... I can read and write decimal numbers as fractions (example : 0.71 = 71/100 I can recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents. I can round decimals with 2 decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place. To find fractions of numbers To compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number. To identify, write and name equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths. To recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and be able to convert from one to the other. Write mathematical statements such as 2/6 + 5/6 = 7/6 = 1 1/6 To add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, and denominators that are multiples of the same number. To multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams. I can round decimals with 2 decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place. I can read, write, order and compare numbers with up to three decimal places. I can match percentages to equivalent decimals and fractions.

I can solve percentage word problems. I can find the percentage of given numbers. I can recognise different angles I can estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles. I can draw and measure given angles in degrees, using a protractor. I can indentify angles on a straight line. I can use the properties of rectangles and irregular and regular polygons to find missing angles.
