Upon surveying, several shrines and altars have been found on Mauna Kea. A shrine is defined in the Mauna Kea Science Reserve Master Plan as a convenient term used to designate a simple altar without a prepared court made by individuals or small family groups who conducted a short ritual which required no priest. Over 80% of special sites identified on the mountain are classified as shrines. Shrines usually had at least one element of the following: upright stones (known as `eho), pavement areas (a relatively level surface made with flat stones), and prepared courts. In adze quarries, shrines were found, typically in the form of upright stones, sometimes assembled in straight lines. Some believe the upright stones were where travelers could leave offerings for deities associated with natural phenomena (like rain and wind). These stones (and piles of stones) were known as ahu, and also could serve as trail markers and land boundaries.
