Heard between 1919 and 1919 1920 1922 1929 1920, the Heard Building was the first high-rise to be constructed in Phoenix. Until the 1924 completion of the Luhrs Tower, it was Downtown's tallest structure. R E P O RT I N G T H E N E WS The Heard Building was constructed to be home for The Arizona Republican owned by Dwight B. Heard. HUMAN SPIDER Bill Strother was reported by The Arizona Republican to have planned a climb on the face of the building to sit on top of the flagpole. With documented building climbs in many other states, only eyewitnesses know if Strother made it to the flagpole or not.
