The two schools first squared off on the lacrosse field in 1963, when Hobart posted a 15-1 victory over the Bison. In fact, the Statesmen won the first eight contests and is currently riding a three-game win streak against Bucknell. WHEN LAST WE MET: Hobart kicked off its 104th season with a 10-8 win over Bucknell at the Haverford School on Feb. 25, 2006. Daryl Veltman led the charge with four points (2-2), while Sean Murphy scored a game-high three goals. John Togneri led the Bison with two goals and an assist. Togneri tied the game, 7-7, with 9:17 remaining, but the Statesmen answered with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart and finished the contest on a 3-1 run. DOME DOWNER: Hobart lost its season opener last Sunday to third-ranked Syracuse by a score of 13-11. The Statesmen held an 11-9, but the Orange closed out the contest with four unanswered goals to reclaim the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. Tightly contested throughout, neither side led by more than two goals. Daryl Veltman and Jeff Colburn paced Hobart with two goals and two assists each. STANDING TALL: Senior goalie Brandon Baer made his first collegiate start against the third-ranked Orange. The 5-foot-7 Bayville, N.Y., native stood on his head, making several point-blank, lunging saves and finishing the afternoon with 15 stops. Baer began the season with just two saves in nine and a half career minutes. FOR STARTERS: Hobart is 60-41-4 in season opening games, following last week s 13-11 lost to Syracuse. The Statesmen had won back-to-back season openers, knocking off Butler in 2005 (11-7) and Bucknell in 2006 (10-8). Hobart has opened seven seasons against Syracuse with the Orange holding a 5-2 lead in those contests. TEWAARATON WATCH: Junior attackman Daryl Veltman is among the 51 players considered early contenders for the Tewaaraton Trophy. Hobart s leading scorer in each of his first two seasons, Veltman opened the 2007 campaign with two goals and two assists at third-ranked Syracuse on Feb. 18. He is tied for sixth in career assists (33) and eighth in both goals (52) and points (85) among Division I Statesmen. In 2005, Veltman scored 50 points and was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year. He followed that effort up with a 31-point season last year, earning second-team All-ECAC honors. A FRATERNITY OF TWO: Daryl Veltman is the second Statesman to be named to the Tewaaraton preseason watch list. Two-time All-American defenseman Greg McCarthy 05 was the first, earning a spot on the 2005 preseason list. HOME SWEET HOME: While the 2007 season begins with away games at Syracuse and vs. Bucknell, Hobart will benefit from a home-heavy schedule. The Statesmen will play at the friendly confines of McCooey Field or Boswell Field eight times. March will be especially friendly with six of the seven games Hobart
