TSC-4064-2 WASTE MANAGEMENT B. Evaluation Sequence: Critical Issue Related to Waste Goal To apply problem-solving skills and knowledge of the periodic table and nuclear transformations, in order to propose a long-term storage solution for waste from a nuclear power plant The main challenge that needs to be addressed in connection with a nuclear power plant, aside from the risks associated with the operation of such a plant, is undoubtedly how to manage the waste from the facility. The site currently used to store waste from the plant will reach its full capacity in the next few years. A new solution must therefore be found very soon. As a nuclear safety specialist, you have been asked to examine this issue. Your task You will propose a procedure for storing waste from a nuclear power plant. To this end, you must: identify the types of waste produced by the plant; determine the impacts associated with these wastes; propose a long-term storage method for the waste. Identifying the types of waste /20 points Before thinking about how to dispose of waste from the nuclear power plant, it is necessary to determine what types of waste are concerned. a) What are the wastes generated by such a plant called and what do these wastes consist of? 10 SOFAD
SCORED ACTIVITY 2 b) From what process(es) do these wastes result? The impacts /20 points Now that you have identified the wastes generated by the nuclear power plant, you must determine what efffects such wastes could have on the environment (flora and fauna) and on human health, if they are not stored properly. a) It is the "emanations" that make the wastes from a nuclear power plant so dangerous. What exactly do these "emanations" consist of? b) What are the potential effects on human health? SOFAD 11
TSC-4064-2 WASTE MANAGEMENT c) What are the potential effects on flora and fauna? A storage method /35 points Now that you are familiar with the types of waste produced by the plant and their potential impacts on human health and the environment, you must draft a text (in paragraph form) in which you propose a safe method for the long-term storage of the waste. You must determine the following, among other issues: the characteristics of the containment vessel that block radiation (types of material, thickness, etc.); the location and key characteristics of the new storage site; the service life of the site and the reasons for this time frame. 12 SOFAD

SCORED ACTIVITY 2 Review of competencies What is a competency? A competency is defined as the development of a set of skills, knowledge, perceptions and attitudes needed to be able to effectively deal with relatively complex situations. In this course, you will develop three types of competencies that you will be able to apply not only in this subject, but also in other academic subjects as well as in your everyday life. They are: Seeks answers or solutions to scientific or technical problems Makes the most of his/her knowledge of science and technology. Communicates using the languages of science and technology. The third competency is not evaluated separately, but as part of the other two competencies. With regard to learning sequences 3 and 4, which you have completed, indicate whether you were able to develop the following key features of the competencies. Activity Competency Key features developed Yes No In part 3.4 The Periodic Properties of Elements Seeks answers or solutions I learned about the assignment to be done in this activity. I arranged the element cards according to the criteria specified. I drew graphs of the trends in certain properties of the elements. I analyzed the table and graphs in order to identify the trends in certain properties of the elements in the periodic table. I formulated my findings related to the trends in certain properties of the elements in the periodic table. I provided an explanation about the meaning of the adjective "periodic" used in regard to the table of elements. SOFAD 15
TSC-4064-2 WASTE MANAGEMENT Activity Competency Key features developed Yes No In part 4.3 Applications of Nuclear Technology Makes the most of his/her knowledge I learned about the assignment to be done in this activity. I learned about various applications of nuclear technology. I associated each application with the nuclear transformation being harnessed. I drafted a news brief explaining the functioning of an application of nuclear technology and describing the benefits. Student's questions or comments Tutor's remarks 5709-07 September 2013
