Pg 15 Student Reading: The Unique Properties of Water Assignment: You will be assigned a section of the reading to become an expert on and a teacher of to your peers. You will work in a group to design a poster describing your property of water. Your poster must have Name of the property Hashtag about the property Picture of the property How the property is important to life You will present your section to the class.

pg 21 Polarity Description: The separation of charge in a molecule. The oxygen end of the water molecule has a slightly negative charge and the hydrogen end has a slightly positive charge. Importance to Life: Because water is charged it forms hydrogen bonds with other water molecules or polar molecules. The charge also causes water to spread out when it freezes. Because it is charged it takes more energy to heat water up.all of the properties of water happen because it is polar!

Hydrogen Bonds make water so special and important Form between the slightly positive and negative charges of polar covalently bonded chemicals Each is weak compared to covalent and ionic bonds Chemical Bonding

Solvents are substances that dissolve other substances in a solution Universal Since water is a Polar molecule, it is able To attach to and suspend many chemicals. Most chemicals are aqueous solutions containing mostly water. Nearly every chemical reaction In your body happens in water. Most important fluids (blood) are solutions.

The tendency of molecules of the same kind to stick to one another. Water molecules are more strongly attracted to each other than other liquids, this attraction is cohesion Water drops collecting on the top side of a penny. Cohesion can work together with adhesion to move liquids through the body against gravity.

The tendency of molecules to stick to other kinds of molecules. Water is also strongly attracted to other chemicals as well. Only works with other POLAR molecules. Water spreading over a glass slide. Cohesion can work together with adhesion to move liquids through the body against gravity.

Specific heat is the amount of energy it takes to change the temperature of a substance 1 degree To heat water, hydrogen bonds must break, so some of the heat energy goes into breaking the bonds. High Specific Heat A lake is still relatively warm in the winter. Your body temperature rarely changes more than a few tenths of a degree.

Heat of Vaporization means how easily a liquid will evaporate into a gas. Water takes a lot of Energy to change from Liquid to gas. High Heat of Vaporization Sweating cools you down. Lakes of water do not evaporate all the water on a hot day When you sweat and the water evaporates, a lot of heat energy leaves your body and this cools you down.

Density is the amount of mass per unit of volume in an object. When water freezes, Hydrogen bonds are made between every molecule, this gives water a lower density when frozen. 4. Ice cubes float in a glass of water. Frozen water floats, this allows fish and other organisms to live safely below a frozen surface.

ph describes how basic or acidic a chemical is. Bases donate OH while acids Donate H + Acids have a low ph (0 7), bases have a high ph (7 14). Water is neutral at a ph of 7. 5. Hydrochloric acid has a ph of 2. Since the body is mostly made of water, it maintains a consistent, neutral ph.
