CHARACTERISTICS OF TRANSFER STUDENTS UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT SPRINGFIELD FALL 2004 University Office for Planning and Budgeting June 2005

RESEARCH SUMMARY University Office for Planning and Budgeting Characteristics of New Transfer Students 1 Purpose The purpose of this study is to report enrollment and characteristics of new transfer students 2 to the (UIS) for the 2004 fall term. The study provides data for use by community college advisors and counselors, faculty members, and administrators in determining the mobility of their students. It also provides data for UIS officers involved in recruitment, admissions, and instructional services. Summary of Results 1. Enrollment trend data is based on ten-day statistics for fall term degree-seeking students. These data show that a total of 555 new degree-seeking transfer students enrolled for fall 2004, down slightly from recent years (606, 610, and 609 in fall 2003, 2002, and 2001, respectively). Almost two-thirds (64 percent) of the transfers who entered UIS in the fall 2004 term last attended an Illinois community college (355), while fewer than 10 percent of students last attended an Illinois public university (46). 2. The top feeder institutions and the number of transfers to UIS for fall 2004 are: Lincoln Land 161 Illinois Central 50 Springfield College 22 Parkland 20 Richland 19 3. Almost 60 percent of new transfers enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and one-fifth in the College of Business and Management. New students most often majored in Liberal Studies (60), Psychology (58), or Computer Science (42) -- each in the College of Liberal Arts and Science -- or Business Administration (51), Management (28), or Accountancy (27) -- each in the College Business and Management. 4. Over half (56 percent) of the new students were female, a ratio closer to balance than in previous years when over 60 percent were female. More than a quarter of new transfers were 21 to 22 years of age. 1 This summary is available on the Internet at www.pb.uillinois.edu or in print form from the University Office for Planning and Budgeting, 506 South Wright--Suite 338, Urbana, IL 61801; phone: (217) 333-8313. 2 New transfers (including University of Illinois inter-campus transfers) are defined as undergraduate students who did not earn credit previously at UIS. In most cases, students earned 60 or more hours before transferring to UIS; however, a few enrolled as sophomores, transferring between 45 and 60 hours.

- 2-5. Most transfers reported their racial/ethnic category as white (77 percent) and 10 percent were African American. 6. Over one quarter of students transfer to UIS holding a GPA over 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. 7. Approximately one-third of new transfer students enroll in each of the following categories at UIS: 1 to 8 hours, 9 to 12 hours, and more than 12 hours. 8. As an upper division institution, most new students transfer 60 hours or more of credit to UIS. Almost half of new students in fall 2004 had earned a degree before entering UIS (43 percent had earned an Associate s degree and 4 percent had earned a Bachelor s degree). 9. A new table was added to the report for fall 2004 showing a breakdown of new transfer students who enrolled at UIS in on-line degree programs compared to those who enrolled in on ground degree programs; 16 percent of students enrolled in on-line programs.
