Unit Topic: This is the Solar System Unit 18 Grade Band: Middle School Unit Target: Earth Science Lesson 1 Instructional Targets: Reading Fluency: Read fluently in materials with varied syntactic structures Acquisition of Vocabulary: Use context clues and text structures to determine meaning of vocabulary Reading Comprehension: Summarize information from text, including main ideas and supporting details Earth and Space Science: Identify the Earth as a planet; Identify characteristics of the Solar System Which of your state standards are aligned to these instructional targets? Classroom Activities/Lesson Plan: Leveled Book: All Around the Sun This story is presented in three leveled text formats: Levels aa, A and C. Select a level appropriate to the student. Description: The Sun is the center of the Solar System. There are eight planets that move around the Sun. Use this story to give the students a small feature of each planet. Do a picture walk. Discuss how the Sun does not move and that the planets move around the Sun. Read the story as a group. Three levels of reading materials are provided with this lesson. Independent or paired reading will focus on individual reading levels with text or supported text versions. Focus on high frequency words and picture supports. Follow up reading by discussing the different features of each planet. Word recognition cards are provided in this lesson to support high frequency words within the unit reading materials. List 1: is, this, all, big, see, was List 2: night, about, first, away, hot, live List 3: around, people, special, earth, fly, eight Use the Word Study Guide in the ULS Tools to extend word recognition skills. Progress monitoring tools are available for monthly checkpoints. Differentiated Tasks: Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 Students will independently read the book. Students will state a word or point to a picture of omitted words during a shared reading. Students will state a sentence from the book by activating a talking switch.
