The Rain in Spain - Tableau Public Workbook This guide will take you through the steps required to visualize how the rain falls in Spain with Tableau public. (All pics from Mac version of Tableau) Workbook and lesson plan by David.litting@uts.edu.au & Alycia.Bailey@uts.edu.au 1. Load Tableau Public When you load Tableau you ll see this screen. On the right are ways of getting help, as well as an image gallery to show you what s possible using the software. 2. To input data into Tableau use connect to a file > excel The excel file for this exercise can be found at this url (The range of data you can upload to Tableau public is mainly limited to excel type files, though you can get access to a much larger range of compatible files if you opt to go for the full version.)
3. Once you download and connect to the raininspain.xls file. You should see these headings on the left of screen in Tableau 4. Now drag both Spain City Heights and Spain Rainfall by city into top right pane. Because both sheets contain the same locations Tableau will notice the similarity and offer to make a union of the documents. Now you ll see something like this: 5. Click Go New Worksheet And now you ll see a page open that looks like the image overleaf..
Much like an Excel pivot table you drag your data onto the field on the right, either to rows or columns. Generally it s good to have name type information in the rows and the numerical information in the columns. 6. Drag place to rows 7. Now drag the height in metres measure to columns.
You should now see a simple graph representing how high each city or landmark is woohoo! Now we need to add the rainfall to the graph. So 8. Drag the millimetres per year measure either over the top of the graph itself, or onto the colour icon in the Marks box.. This overlays the rainfall as a colour which is now visible in the marks section as a colour. Having the rainfall represented as shades of light to dark blue is nice, but we can still do more to make clear the relationship between height and rainfall.
9. Look over to the right of screen to the Show Me floating toolbar and select a different type of visualisation. Some visualisations will be greyed out, because they can t be achieved using the available data. Have a play with some of the visualisations and see if you find anything you think tells this tale pretty well. 10. After looking around, try selecting the comparison graph Your data should now look like this:
Having these two side by side is nice, but ideally it would be good to sort these columns so that the highest places were at one end and the lowest at the other, so we can see if there is a trend in how rainfall grows (or not) as the altitude drops. To do that 11. Use the drop down arrow under place on the columns area and then choose sort (see overleaf). 12. Then choose sort by field, select height in metres and then choose the descending radio button We can now see the relationships between height and rainfall more clearly.
13. If you want to fit the entire graph on the screen use the drop down box labelled standard and change the option to entire view
(nb: this will change the scale so that labels are harder to read, but if you click on a particular data point you ll be able to see the information you need.)
13. We can rename the left axis if we like by clicking on it and calling it Height (m) / Rainfall (mm). (You can create a double axis by dragging the rainfall measure to the right of the visualisation until you see a dotted line, but the double axis graph is not compatible with the bar graph visualisation. Instead you ll get a scatterplot.) You can also label the visualisation by double clicking in the text box above it that reads Sheet. Eg: 14. And finally, you can save the sheet to Tableau Public if you wish by using File>Save as or you can screen shot it and save it that way, but it will lose its interactivity.
Making Maps with Tableau 1. Make a new sheet 2. In this new sheet, using the same dataset, move the latitude measure to columns 3. Now move longitude measure to rows. 4. This enables the map visualisation in the show me area. 5. Now, drag the place (Spain Rainfall) dimension over the map or to the detail card in marks
At present the map isn t active, we need to do something to make it work. 6. Go to the map tab, then choose edit locations 7. Country region change to Spain
8. There are places that it might not be able to find so rewrite them Now we have all the locations that Tableau can match indicated on a map At this point you can experiment to see if Tableau can add any layers to the map. Go to the Map tab, and then choose Map Layers. This will bring up a series of layers available to Tableau. You ll find there is much more detail available for the US than Spain, but we can add place names
Now we have out data points and some place names for reference, but we don t have the height or the rainfall superimposed on these locations. So.. 9. Drag Height in Metres onto the map, or onto the Size card. Once you re finished you ll see this!
10. Finally we need to superimpose rainfall onto these locations. To do that drag millimetres of rain onto the colour card. Now our map looks like this!
To better represent the circles it might be good to make them a bit bigger, and maybe as little mountainous triangles. To do that 11. Go to marks shape drop down then click on shape 12. Then choose the triangle.. Now we have a map that looks like this:
It s possible that this will look better with the low rainfall being reflected in a dry colour and the high rainfall as blue. To do that 13. Then click on colour edit colour 14. Then change your colour palette say from orange (dry) to blue (wet) This makes the colours look a bit dry generally though
So Edit colour again, but this time choose advanced and then alter the palette by making the centre or the spectrum about 500, instead of If you d like to see the intensity of the rainfall indicated as a number as well as a colour you can do that by 16. Clicking label, then tick the show mark label checkbox
Now the rainfall in mm is indicated beneath the mountain. If you want to change the size of the mountain icon you can do it by clicking size and then using the drag bar.
17. You can now name your sheet by double clicking on it Which will also relabel the chart 18. Finally Then you can switch presentation mode and have them as slides. Oh, and in case you were wondering Spanish rain does not actually stay mainly in the plain. It falls mainly in the northern mountains. [3] In Spanish, the phrase was translated as La lluvia en Sevilla es una maravilla (The rain in Seville is a miracle). Wikipedia
