5 Full Disclosure Paul has previously done monitoring work for quarries Louise has previously (2013) advised CDHB about emissions from quarries following resident complaints 5

6 Why are we here? ECan, CCC and CDHB want a scientifically robust monitoring to consider (where practicable): Background levels; Meteorology; and Quarrying operations 6

7 Where do we fit? We are independent specialists who monitor and report (objectively and truthfully) Compare data with health-based criteria But health advice by CDHB (not us) 7

13 How will we do it? Three different types of instruments: 1. RCS 2. PM 10 BAM with met (reference method) Nephelometers 13

14 RCS Monitoring Uses a cyclone to separate out particles larger than 4 microns. 14

15 RCS Monitoring The smaller particles collected onto a PVC filter over one month exposure laboratory for analysis 15

20 PM 10 Reference Monitoring The FH62 requires a 240V mains power supply and needs to be kept in an insulated enclosure 20

22 PM 10 Reference Monitoring USEPA deem the BAM an equivalent reference method This will be supported by a meteorological monitoring station 22

23 PM 10 investigative monitoring Nephelometer uses a laser to measure the amount of scattering due to particles Glass Sample cell Transmitted light Laser Lens 23

24 PM 10 investigative monitoring Nephelometers are not reference instruments. But reasonably close, have a high level of precision and relatively portable. 24
