2 US WEEK OF AUGUST 7-13 Drier Retail implications: In the East, demand for summer items such as air conditioners, suncare and cold beverages is expected to surge due to warm weather. Cool weather in the West will drive demand for back-to-school purchases. Last year this week, the US was warm and dry: It was the warmest second week of August since 2010 and the driest since % Sports Drinks East sees heat again: The East is expected to see increasing heat and humidity once again after a cooler start to the week. Temperatures will trend above normal and last year starting from midweek, with the strongest anomalies in the Midwest and Northeast. These sultry summer conditions will last into the upcoming weekend. West is cool and dry: Western regions will see a cooler trend, in contrast to the East. Most areas will remain dry, exacerbating the growing drought. Rain is possible: Most regions in the country have the potential to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with the best chances for rain in Eastern regions mid-to-late week. Severe weather episodes, with strong winds and heavy rains, are possible, and they may cause localized flooding in the Southeast, particularly along the Gulf Coast. 2

3 US WEEK OF AUGUST Retail implications: In the Plains, demand for core summer items such as fans, apparel and insect repellent will be high due to warm weather. The cooler trend on the East Coast will increase demand for back-to-school apparel this week compared with the same week last year. Last year this week, the US was warm and wet: Temperatures were above normal, and it was the wettest week since Bagged Ice Weather is hot in interior regions: Strong heat and humidity are expected to return in the Plains and expand to encompass all interior US regions. Temperatures have the potential to exceed 100 F. Cool on the East and West Coasts: The East Coast will enjoy cooler and less humid conditions for most of the week, following a week of significant heat and humidity. Similarly, the West Coast is expected to see more seasonal temperatures. 2% Dry west of the Mississippi, while wet in the East: Locations west of the Mississippi River are likely to be drier, while those from the lower Mississippi River Valley into the Northeast are expected to see stormy periods. Heavy downpours, strong winds and hail will be possible with these storms. 3

Becoming even cooler: Western areas will start and end the week with relatively warm weather. However, a strong front will push into the continent during the week, leading to much cooler conditions for most areas. Drier in the West and wetter in the East: Early in the week, showers will accompany the onset of cooler temperatures in the West. By midweek, the front will pick up Mediterranean moisture and, as a result, Central and Eastern Europe will see heavier rainfall. 4

In the beginning of the week, demand for summery goods such as fans will be hampered in the East due to cool weather. Weather gets warm: In the beginning of the week, the West will be warm and the East will be cool. By the middle of the week, though, temperatures in the East will moderate toward normal or slightly above normal, while temperatures in the West will slip to just above normal. Most of the continent is dry: Showers will linger across the Northeast early in the week and light rain will push into the West later in the week. In other regions, dry conditions are expected. 5
