1 Arizona Climate Summary June 2017 Summary of conditions for May 2017 May 2017 Temperature and Precipitation Summary May 1 st 16 th : A strong ridge of high pressure developed over the southwest during the first week of May. Conditions were very dry across the state leading to high fire danger. No rainfall was reported in Arizona through the 5 th of May. Daytime temperatures reached triple digits in the desert southwest and along the lower Colorado River. Nighttime temperatures in Flagstaff climbed above freezing. On the 6 th, a low pressure system moved into the state from California and brought some light showers to northern Arizona. The low pressure system was cut-off on the 6 th and continued to spin over the southwest through the 10 th. Light rain showers were reported across northern Arizona on the 7 th and 8 th, and rain fell across most of the state on the 8 th, with just under an inch of snow in Flagstaff and Bellemont on the 8 th and 9 th. Rainfall lingered through the 12 th as the system slowly made its way out of the state. Rainfall totals included 0.49 at Williams, 0.77 at Seligman, 0.34 at Prescott, 0.36 at Phantom Ranch, 0.25 at Petrified Forest, 0.86 at Payson, 0.24 at Apache Junction, 0.19 at Heber-Overgaard, 0.71 at Grand Canyon North Rim, 0.10 at Eloy,0.19 at East Mesa, 0.48 at Coronado National Monument, 0.15 at Carefree, 0.31 at Canyon de Chelly, 0.97 at Bellemont, 0.14 at Yuma, 0.28 at Winslow, 0.55 at Window Rock, 0.02 at Tucson, 0.16 at Sonoran Desert Museum, 0.12 at Scottsdale, 0.05 at St. Johns, 0.04 at Safford, 0.01 at Phoenix, 0.16 at Page, 0.40 at Nogales, 0.19 at Kingman, and 0.07 at Bisbee-Douglas. The cloud cover that accompanied the low pressure kept temperatures well below normal across the state. Dry conditions returned as the system moved off to the northeast, and temperatures rose to near normal values under clear skies. Warm dry conditions continued through the 15 th. May 16 th 31 st : A second strong low pressure system moved into the state on the 16 th bringing more rain and snow to northern Arizona, and very heavy snow to the northern Colorado Rockies. The system hung around through the 19 th, finally exiting to the northeast on the 20 th. Snow totals included 1.5 a Canyon de Chelly, 1.4 at Navajo National Monument, 1 at Flagstaff and 1 at Bellemont. Rainfall totals included 0.28 at the Grand Canyon, 0.37 at Page, 0.22 at St. Johns, 0.19 at Valle, 0.13 at Window Rock, 0.11 at Winslow, 0.12 at Alpine, 0.22 at the Grand Canyon North Rim, 0.17 at Petrified Forest, 0.21 at Seligman, 0.18 at Show Low, and 0.25 at Williams. Temperatures were well below normal this week. As the low pressure system moved out, high pressure slowly returned, though it did not finally get established until the 24 th. Temperatures slowly rebounded and finally warmed to well above normal values from the 22 nd through the 24 th. By the 26 th a weak low pressure system to our north brought cooler air into the state dropping temperatures by nearly 10 degrees. Highs on the 27 th only reached 96 o F in the southwest deserts, down from 109 o F on the 24 th. The cool down was short-lived as high pressure returned and once again the southwest deserts climbed into triple digits for the rest of the month. A short wave brought scattered showers to the northern and eastern high country on the 30 th and 31 st. The highest rainfall totals were 0.33 at Alpine on the 30 th and 0.27 at Show Low on the 31 st. May was generally cooler and drier than normal statewide.
