1 From the Desk of the City Manager Bi Monthly Newsletter Keeping you informed Small City with Big Appeal Honoring Our Past with a Vision for the Future Brett McGuire. I would almost swear that Spring is here to stay! Of course, we all know that this is Texas and things can change on us in a matter of moments. I ll be one of the first ones to admit that I have truly enjoyed our unseasonable warm weather over the past couple of months. I am pleased to announce that the City of Lake Worth Police Department has a new Chief of Police. James Jimmy Womack was sworn in on Monday, February 29 th as your new Chief of Police. Jimmy has been with the Department since June 1, 2015 as the Captain/ Asst. Chief and has spent much of his time getting acquainted with our City, the citizens and settling into the Department. He came to us from the Paris Police Department; where he was a Lieutenant working in the Professional Standards and Training Division. He has over 23 years of law enforcement experience in both Texas and Louisiana and is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Jimmy also has teaching experience, and has served as an instructor for several colleges in Texas. Jimmy has a service-oriented approach to policing and believes that Community engagement and support is the key to success for any law enforcement agency. He has a strong ethical background and has a desire to carry on the Department s tradition of Integrity, Equity, Service. I truly believe that the citizens of our great City will benefit with Jimmy serving as your Chief of Police. Please take a moment to meet him and get to know him. I hope that everyone has a wonderful and blessed Easter. 6 Here are some definitions and guidelines to follow to help keep you and your family safe: Severe Thunderstorm Watch - issued when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms, people located in and around the watch area should keep an eye to the sky and listen to their NOAA weather radio all hazards or tune to local broadcast media for further weather information. The watch is intended to give you time to prepare, time to review safety rules. Severe Thunderstorm Warning - issued when a severe thunderstorm has been detected by National Weather Service Doppler Radar or any other reliable report has been received. A warning is usually issued for portions of one or two counties, for an hour or less. If the warning includes your neighborhood or work place, you should take immediate action to protect your life and the lives of others. Severe thunderstorms can produce large hail and damaging winds. Tornadoes can and occasionally do accompany severe thunderstorms. Treat this warning the same as you would a tornado warning by taking the proper safety precautions. The best defense against thunderstorms is to stay inside a sturdy building or shelter that can protect you from deadly lightning, large hail, damaging winds, flooding rain and tornadoes. Fortunately, thunderstorms typically do not last very long and will most often pass by your location in less than one hour. Once in a shelter, stay away from windows and avoid electrical equipment and plumbing. Remember to bring pets inside. If there is time, secure loose objects outside as these objects often become dangerous flying debris in high winds. Postpone outdoor activities until the storms have passed. If caught outside, take shelter in a sturdy enclosed building or hard top automobile immediately. Avoid open spaces, isolated objects, high ground and metallic objects. Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. If a tornado is spotted, act quickly and move to the lowest level basement of your shelter, putting as many walls between yourself and the outside as possible. 6
7 Community Awareness Program The Lake Worth Police Department is currently developing an interactive Community Awareness Program that is designed to provide information for its citizens to improve your quality of life. This program will include educational programs such as policing programs in America, new law, scams, identity theft, severe weather issues, power outages, human trafficking, family violence, self-defense, mental health, Crisis intervention, critical incidents, theories in criminology, drugs in society and many more. We would also like to be able to develop educational programs to address issues that you, the public, would like to learn about. If you have a topic that you would be interested in seeing included in this program please contact the Lake Worth Police Department. Programs will start in March and it will be held the second Monday of the month from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm (dates and times subject to change). Please call or check our local newsletter for more details. Respectfully, John Smith Community Policing Unit Lake Worth Police Department Phone Ext
