Winter Storm Saturday into Sunday December 14-15, 2013 Prepared 900 AM EST Friday December 13, 2013 Al Cope NOAA s NJ Forecast office
Purpose of Briefing Briefing #3 for event. Next briefing package to be issued Friday afternoon. Promote situational awareness for emergency management community & partners Provide guidance for planning efforts Briefing applies to Mount Holly service area shaded in green on map
Executive Summary Another winter storm will affect the region this weekend, from Saturday into Sunday. A winter storm watch is in effect for most of northern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Precipitation will begin Saturday morning and end by Sunday morning. Precipitation will likely begin as snow almost everywhere, but a change-over to sleet, freezing rain and plain rain is expected from south to north. Precipitation may remain all snow or a snow/sleet/freezing rain mixture for areas north and west of Philadelphia/Trenton. This package includes our latest snow and ice accumulation forecasts issued today at 400 am EST. These amounts are subject to change as additional guidance becomes available. Winter precipitation is the major factor with this event. Neither winds nor tidal flooding are likely to be an issue. As the event unfolds, access our latest storm-total snow and ice forecasts on our website:
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the blue-shaded areas from Saturday morning through late Saturday night. This includes most of northern New Jersey and all of eastern Pennsylvania except the far southeast portion.
Storm Total Snow Accumulation Storm Total Ice Accumulation
Expected Temperature and Weather at 700 am Saturday
Expected Temperature and Weather at 100 pm Saturday
Expected Temperature and Weather at 700 pm Saturday
Expected Temperature and Weather at 100 am Sunday
Expected Temperature and Weather at 700 am Sunday
Additional Information This will be a mixed precip-type event for most areas. Places north and west of Philadelphia/Trenton will see a snow-ice mix with several inches of accumulation. Areas south and east will see a changeover to rain with perhaps 1 to 2 inches of snow Saturday morning. Most precipitation will end by sunrise on Sunday. Confidence is fairly high for significant winter weather in the watch area. Confidence in the timing and location of p-type transitions, as well as amounts, is low to medium at best. Stay tuned for further updates. Low pressure with this system will be moving quickly and will not intensify until well offshore on Sunday. Hence winds and tidal flooding should not be a concern. Temperatures will start out below freezing in most areas on Saturday morning, so some initial snow accumulation is possible on untreated roads, even for areas that end up with mostly rain.
