Total November rain for most areas ranged from 3 inches to more than 5 inches in northeast Indiana.. Once again the southeast and portions of southcentral Indiana received below normal rainfall. In this dry area of the state, monthly rain varied from 1 to 2 inches. Rain of 1 to nearly 2 inches on the 20th in northern Indiana caused streams and rivers to rise. The Kankakee River in northcentral and northwest Indiana approached bankfull levels. The Wabash River at Lafayette in west central Indiana exceeded flood stage slightly. Streams and rivers in northeast Indiana approached bankfull levels. The most significant weather event of the month was the ending of the above normal average temperature string in central Indiana. Winter-like temperatures arrived late on the 1st and remained through the 12th. At times, the average temperatures were more than 20 degrees below normal. Many areas of Indiana experienced their coldest temperatures of the month during this period. Temperatures moderated abruptly beginning on the 13th. This mild period continued through the 22nd. On the 19th the average temperature exceeded 20 degrees above normal. Most areas of central and northern Indiana had their warmest day of the month. Once again the temperature reversed itself and Indiana was plunged into the freezer again. Much below normal temperatures arrived on the 23rd and remained through the 26th. Page 2 Very mild temperatures finished the month. Temperatures on the 29th were in the 60s across much of Indiana and exceeded 70 degrees in portions of southern Indiana. During the early morning of the 30th, a squall line produced winds in excess of 60 mph in much of the state. Winds of greater than 80 mph were reported in portions of west central and central Indiana. Rain occurred on 10 to 18 days during the month. Only locations in southwest, central and northeast Indiana had 1 to 2 days with an inch or more of rain. The remainder of Indiana did not received an inch of rain in one day. November was the first month with measureable snow this winter season. Snowfall for the month ranged from an inch in southcentral Indiana to over 8 inches near Lake Michigan. Monthly average temperatures ranged from 1 to nearly 4 degrees below normal. The warmest temperatures occurred on the 19th-20th

40 I I (DATES) or 29th. Maximum temperatures ranged from upper 60s to lower 70s. The coldest temperatures occurred on the 5th, 8th or 26th. Minimum temperatures ranged from 5 to 15 degrees. Maximum temperature remained below 32.5 degrees from 2 days in southern Indiana to 6 days in northeast and eastern Indiana. The minimum temperature fell below 32.5 degrees 13 to 18 days. Soil moisture conditions were wet across almost the entire state at the end of November. There was no frost in the ground at the end of the month. Total December

41 precipitation ranged from slightly less than 1 inch in northeast Indiana to more than 5 inches in extreme southcentral and southeast Indiana. Much of the state received 1 to 2 inches of rain for the month. The portion of southern Indiana near the Ohio River received above normal rain in December. This was a reversal of the below normal trend in November. This area of Indiana received 4 to 5 inches for the month. The biggest rain of the month occurred on the 2nd and 3rd. Rain of 1 to nearly 2 1/2 inches fell in southern Indiana south of a line from Poseyvi11e in Posey County to Liberty in Union County. Rainfall totals exceeded 2 inches in Clark...Ripley...Ohio and Switzerland counties. Rain returned frequently to Indiana during the remainder of the month. Amounts were generally less than 1/4 of an inch. Southern Indiana, near the Ohio River, continued to receive more rain than the rest of the state. On the 13th, this area received 3/4 to slightly more than 1 inch of rain. Rivers and streams in Indiana showed slight to moderate response to rainfall during December. At the end of the month rivers and streams were at low levels. Ground conditions remained wet. There was little or no frost in the ground. Temperatures from the 1st to the 5th were near normal to much below normal. The coldest day of the month was the 4th when minimum temperatures dropped into the single digits across Indiana. Page 2 Temperatures warmed abruptly on the 6th. Much above normal temperatur~s continued from the 7th to the 13th. The maximum temperatures occurred during this period. Temperatures reached into the 60s across the state. They were slightly below normal from the 15th to the 19th. Above normal temperatures finished the month. Monthly average temperatures were 3 to slightly more than 4 degrees above normal. This quickly reversed the below normal trend for November. Central Indiana has experienced above normal monthly temperatures for 13 out of the last 14 months. As a result of the mild temperatures in December, snowfall for the month was below normal. Snow was nearly absent in central and central Indiana. This area received less than 1 inch of snow. Monthly snow totals in northern Indiana ranged from 2 to nearly 12 inches in the South Bend areaa. Maximum temperatures remained below 32.5 degrees from 1 day in southern Indiana to 5 days in northern Indiana. The minimum temperature fell below 32.5 degrees 15 to 26 days.
