April 1, 2016 Welcome to Spring! Spring is always the best time of the year. Everything is new and fresh. What a blessed and interesting season we have to look forward to here at Edencrest.

With the bulk of this work done, the landscaping will really become the focus of many people, all working on many projects, as the beautification of the property begins.

2 April 1, 2016 Welcome to Spring! Spring is always the best time of the year. Everything is new and fresh. What a blessed and interesting season we have to look forward to here at Edencrest. Because the weather has been unseasonably warm for the past several weeks, the earthwork around the building has been moving right along and is almost complete. With the bulk of this work done, the landscaping will really become the focus of many people, all working on many projects, as the beautification of the property begins. Step out on the balcony, pull up a chair down on the patio, and enjoy the show! Please always feel free to invite and welcome any and all of your friends and neighbors and family members to visit. Do you know that the public areas, such as the private dining rooms and the activity room are usually open and available for meetings? If you know of anyone who belongs to a church group or club and they are looking for space for meeting of any kind, please see Josie to discuss how we can possibly help. We just ask that we know in advance, so that we can keep the calendar up to date and that we are have plenty of food and drink available to make everyone feel welcome and at home. The bus is here (in case someone missed this news!). We are pleased that everyone can now have rides to appointments and Josie can help everyone who would like to get out to shop or just for a ride. 3 Happy Spring Time, Hello everyone, all of us are so glad the snow is gone and the grass is green. I am the Healthcare Coordinator (HCC) here at Edencrest@ Green Meadows. I am excited to be part of this family. As the HCC I would like to leave you with some health care tips. With spring comes spring cleaning, please be careful. We are not as young as we wish we were. If climbing ladder have a spotter, mowing grass use ear protectors, DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE, it may be too late for the Flu shot, however, not the pneumonia vaccination. Ask your doctor if you meet requirements for Medicare to pay. This injection can be given at your annual check-up. While you are there ask about tetanus. Time flies when you re having fun and you might just find out you are due for one. And the number one prevention against diseases is hand hygiene. Hand wash. Hand wash. Hand wash. Don t forget to lotion. So, just a bit about me. I have 20+ years in nursing. All of it has been in extended care. I have worked in memory care the past 13+ years loved every day. I am currently serving in the Air National Guard at the 132 wing. I moved to Des Moines in 1997 with my husband. Our children are grown and have blessed up with many beautiful grandchildren. 4 With spring and nice weather heading out way, it s a great time to start planning for tornado weather. We recently had our Tornado drill meeting with the residents to ensure everyone knows the plan when the time comes. What is the difference between a watch and a warning? The basic difference between a weather watch and a weather warning is the immediacy of weather conditions. A watch is issued to alert people in a certain region, in advance, that conditions are favorable for dangerous weather. When certain meteorological circumstances are present, severe weather can develop quickly, and watches are issued to prepare people for this possibility so they can take appropriate safety measures. One can be issued for any type of severe weather, including winter storm and wildfire conditions, but most frequently involve severe thunderstorms, floods and flash floods, or tornadoes. The simplest distinction is that a weather watch indicates possible severe weather, while a warning indicates that severe storms or the conditions that produce severe storms have been observed in nearby areas and will likely reach the location being warned. A watch does not necessarily mean that severe weather is imminent; it indicates that it is possible, and likely, due to existing or predicted atmospheric events or conditions. There are distinct guidelines for determining if a watch or a warning should be issued. In our community chose to start heading to our tornado safe area when a watch has been issued to ensure everyone s safety. In her free time, Ashley is teaching yoga & barre at the Urbandale, Clive and Des Moines YMCAs. She enjoys cycling and has rode RAGBRAI over 8 years.

5 Ashley Phelps Community Relations Coordinator Please join us in welcoming Ashley Phelps as the Community Relations Coordinator for Edencrest at Green Meadows Assisted Living & Memory Care! Prior to joining our team, Ashley had experience working with seniors as they age in each individual's home. Ashley's passion is helping seniors. In her free time, Ashley is teaching yoga & barre at the Urbandale, Clive and Des Moines YMCAs. She enjoys cycling and has rode RAGBRAI over 8 years. You can find Ashley outside walking her dog, Lola, or planning a trip with her husband. Ashley is very excited to join the Edencrest at Green Meadows team because she has always known she wanted to work directly with seniors. Ashley is very excited to have you stop by and give you a tour of our brand new community! Shaun Mattern Culinary Coordinator Please join us in welcoming Shaun Mattern as the Culinary Coordinator for Edencrest at Green Meadows Assisted Living and Memory Care! Prior to joining our team, Shaun had experience working for individuals with developmental disabilities in Endependence Center in Norfolk, VA. Shaun s passion is cooking amazing meals for the community. In his free time, Shaun likes to read, take his dog Cooper for a hike, camping, and karaoke. Shaun is very excited to join the Edencrest at Green Meadows team because he gets to work with amazing people. Page 5 of 6

Thursday mornings at 10:45 we will be having our shopping outings, our first trip will be to Dollar Tree and Big Lots on Merle Hay Road. Please meet in the lobby prior to 10:45. The last Thursday of the month, we will chose a restaurant to go out to eat. I am also excited to announce that our salon will be up and running this month. Kathe Fosnaugh will be our stylist, she has 43 years of experiences in the hair business. She owned a salon with her mother for years. Kathe is very excited to serve our community! I will print and send out available days/times and prices to everyone s apartment when they come available. The biggest hit in our community has been Happy Hour and Wii Bowling. Our Happy Hour begins at 2:30 pm on Fridays, it s a great time for everyone to socialize and relax with one another. Wii Bowling has become a regular activity during week, especially weekends. We have started a Wii Bowling tournament on Saturdays. It gets a little competitive, but everyone has a great time! Live 2 B Healthy is another regular activity in the morning at 10:45 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Right outside my door this group likes to laugh and make it a great time!
