This time we want to tell you about one year in Finland; what the weather is like, what celebrations there are, what we eat and do. The day is very long in the summer in Finland, the nightless night, and very short in the winter, polar night. We ll tell you when the sun rises and sets at Lappajärvi in each month on 15th day. We ll also tell you the mean temperature of each month on Lappajärvi level. Most of the days we mention are flag-raising days. You will also learn the Finnish names of the months. They are very different from many other languages.

There is a saying in Finland that good "Tuomas" (21 st December) brings the Christmas and bad "Nuutti" (13 th January) takes it away. Some people don t put their Christmas tree away until on Nuutti's day. School starts after Epiphany, 6th January. There are no special celebrations in January in Finland. At school we ski, play ice hockey and skate, if it is cold enough. In 2008 January wasn't very cold or snowy but this year was different. Sunrise 9.42 a.m. Sunset 3.29 p.m. Temperature -8 C

5th February is J.L. Runeberg's Day. He was a famous Finnish poet. We eat special Runeberg's pies. On Valentine's Day we send Valentine cards. On Shrovetide we eat pea soup and buns with jam and cream and slide down the hills. Kalevala's Day, 28th February, is a day of Finnish culture. Kalevala is the national epic of Finland. In February we have a one week skiing holiday. Sunrise 8.16 a.m. Sunset 5.04 p.m. Temperature -8 C

The International Women's Day is on 8 th of March. Minna Canth s Day is 19 th. It s a day of equality. Minna Canth was a famous female writer. School skiing competition is in March. The six best in each category get a medal. Our school, Rantakangas, got one gold medal and one silver medal. We also got seven other medals. In March it is usually winter in Finland. When we are writing this there is still a lot of snow on the ground. In March the day and night are equally long. Sunrise 6.43 a.m. Sunset 6.27 p.m. Temperature -4 C

1 st April is April Fool s day. Then we make jokes on each other. This year Easter is in April. In Finland we eat mämmi at Easter. It s made of rye and it s a dessert where we put sugar and cream on. In this part of Finland where we live, people burn bonfires at Easter. Children dress up as witches and go around. They give decorated twigs of willow and wish Hyvää pääsiäistä! (Happy Easter!) And they get sweets or money. We grow grass and decorate it with chocolate eggs, chicks and bunnies. Normally we still have snow on the ground at Easter. Our class at Kirkonkylä makes an outing to Piispala on 27 th to 29 th April. See Sunrise 5.57 a.m. Sunset 8.56 p.m. Temperature +2,5 C

1st of May is called Vappu in Finland. It is a carnival and a public holiday. At school we have a fancy dress party before it. We drink mead and eat May-Day fritters and donuts. The second Sunday of May is Mothers' Day, (mother=äiti). We celebrate our mothers and give them presents. The 12 th May is called J. V. Snellmans's Day. It's the day of Finnish culture. Snellman was a famous Finnish philosopher and writer. The 17 th May is Remembrance Day when we remember those men who were killed in action during the war. Birds of passage come back to Finland in April and May. Farmers are very busy as they sow all the crops. Our school at Länsiranta goes to an outing to a place called Piispala. There we can do almost anything: swim, bowl, play ice hockey, ride a horse, do make-ups, climb, play floorball and shoot with a bow. School ends at 31 st May. In the far north, at Utsjoki, the sun rises on 16 th May and doesn't set until 27 th July. Sunrise 4.20 a.m. Sunset pm. Temperature +9 C

June is a very nice month because our summer holiday starts. The 4 th June is Flag Day of Defence Forces. In Finland we celebrate Midsummer in June. This year it s on 20 th June. It s also the Day of the Finnish Flag and the flags wave through the night. Many people go their summer cottages to swim, go to sauna, boat and fish. We like to barbecue outside and eat sausages. Finnish people love sausages! In June the weather is brilliant but not very hot. In June we swim, eat ice cream, go cycling, rollerblading and do everything fun with our friends. Sunrise 3.15 a.m. Sunset p.m. Temperature +14,5 C

July is the most popular holiday month in Finland. Many people go to their summer cottages or visit their relatives and friends, travel around in Finland or go abroad. Also cruises to Sweden or Estonia are popular. Especially people in the cities have summer cottages in the countryside. The cottages are usually close to lakes, so people fish, boat and of course swim and go to the sauna! In Finland there are a lot of music festivals. Many children go to some kind of summer camps and families visit fun parks. July the normally the warmest month in Finland. Sunrise 3.53 a.m. Sunset p.m. Temperature +17 C

August is usually the month when farmers start harvesting their crops. Our classmate Jenni has her birthday on 25 th August, happy birthday, Jenni! Our school starts in August, next August it will start on 12 th. Our next school year will be more exciting - we are going to the secondary! It s a lot bigger school than we have now at Rantakangas, and we are going to get a lot of new classmates. Sunrise 5.23 a.m. Sunset 9.35 p.m. Temperature +15 C

In Finland the farmers harvest wheat, barley, turnip rape, rye, oat and potatoes. We pick lingonberries and mushrooms in the forest. We have track and field competitions at school. Birds of passage leave Finland and fly to south. Sunrise 6.50 a.m. Sunset 7.50 p.m. Temperature +10,5 C

Aleksis Kivi s Day is 10 th October. It's a day of Finnish literature. Aleksis Kivi was a famous Finnish writer. He is important because he wrote in Finnish at a time when most writers wrote in Swedish. On All Saints Day, 31 st October, we take candles to the graveyard. Some people celebrate Halloween nowadays. In Lapland first snow comes in October. In other parts of Finland it s dark and rainy. Sunrise 8.13 a.m. Sunset 6.08 p.m. Temperature +4 C

In southern Finland November is dark and there is very little snow. In Lapland it is winter already. Special days in November are Father s Day, 8 th, and Swedish Day, 6 th. We celebrate father (= isä ) with presents. The Swedish speaking people in Finland celebrate on 6 th. In the far north, at Utsjoki, the sun sets on 25 th November and doesn t rise until 17 th January. Sunrise 8.46 a.m. Sunset 3.33 p.m. Temperature -2,5 C

The 6 th of December is the Finnish Independence Day. It s a public holiday. Finland became independent in Before the day we have a party at school. We raise the Finnish flag, we have patriotic program and have juice and cake. On the 6 th of December there are big celebrations all over Finland. The president has a big party in her castle and we all watch it on TV. The 13 th of December is Lucia s Day. Mainly the Swedish people in Finland celebrate it. But we also have a little party at school. One of the girls is Lucia and she has a candle crown on her head. People are very busy because Christmas is near. Sunrise a.m. Sunset 2.42 p.m. Temperature -5 C
