2 Quality Inspection Instruments The Inspecta range of quality microscope components and modular systems provides an easy-to-engineer solution to the special inspection needs of many industries. Where a standard microscope is not suitable, the Inspecta products can be selected and assembled to give exactly the right optical viewing system. CCTV or digital cameras allow the system to be further enhanced. Pyser have designed the Inspecta range to be easily specified and assembled, and have created a series of proven solutions to make it even easier to select the correct components. Typical applications include tooling alignment, inspection of machine wear, real-time automation system viewing, reaction or test chamber viewing and analysis, at-line or on-line inspection, and many more. To create an instrument that will meet a specific requirement, a number of parameters need to be considered and specified: Where will the instrument be sited? Consider an application where a small component being machined on a lathe needs to be inspected/measured without removing it from the chuck. In this situation, the lathe itself, the chuck and tooling may all restrict the siting of the instrument. Consideration must also be given to the viewing position of the operator so as not to be dangerous. It may be desirable to remove any viewing system away from the work whilst machining operations are in progress, thus a boom arm might be the best option. Alternatively one could opt for quick release fittings to remove the instrument completely. One area that can be a problem is illumination at the point where the specimen is located. There are numerous lighting systems available so most problems can be overcome. What size detail do we need to see or measure? The human eye can detect 0.5mm without optical aids, 0.1mm (100μ) with say a x5 magnification and 0.01mm (10μ) with 50x magnification. Selecting a x2 objective, a 150mm tube and a x10 eyepiece would give an instrument with 20x total magnification, allowing the observer to measure down to say 20 microns over a useful field of 8mm and with a working distance of 70mm (Distance between objective lens and component being viewed). What measurements are required? There are essentially three choices that allow measurements to be made. The simplest is having a reticle fitted into the focussing eyepiece to provide straightforward measurements within a fixed field of view. Alternatively a CCTV camera can be included and connected to a screen which has a film overlay (like a profile projector) to do the measurement or comparison. The third option is to have a digital camera connected to a PC with image analysis software. An image is captured and measurements performed using the software tools. Reticles can be selected from a standard range that includes scales crosslines and grids in various sizes and formats. It should be noted that the pattern on the reticle needs to be sized according to the objective magnification of the system, i.e. when using a x5 objective, a 0.1mm dimension on the specimen will appear as 0.5mm at the reticle image plane. Where specific repeat measurements are to be made either for tolerancing or gauging, special patterns can be designed to simplify and speed up the operation. Before choosing a reticle pattern it is important to consider again what can be seen through the eyepiece. Generally the same limitations apply as when choosing the magnification of the microscope. With a x10 eyepiece, lines separated by 0.1mm (100μ) are easily discerned and with good lighting 50μ scale divisions can be read. Unfortunately, when overlaying the graticule pattern on the subject, boundaries become obscured and the scale divisions merge with the details of the subject. If a special pattern is envisaged it is better to have a standard pattern fitted to the microscope in the first instance and then to assess whether the line spacing and thickness are right for the task in hand. Where there is any doubt, it is better to discuss the problems with our engineers and to submit samples of your components for assessment in our workshops. What is the most convenient viewing position? For some applications a simple straight viewing tube would be suitable and for others it may be necessary to have a 45º or 90º angled head. The position for mounting the instrument, fixed obstructions, safety cages, etc, may all influence the choice of horizontal, vertical or angled viewing. Does the instrument need to be focussed or moveable? Increasing the magnification of the system will always decrease the depth of field (the distance between the nearest and farthest objects on an image that are in focus) decreases. If low magnification is required and the component is always in the same position and orientation, then the instrument could be focussed once by adjusting its position
3 in the mounting block and securing it tightly. If the magnification required is medium to high or if the component varies in position, then a focussing device such as a rack and pinion unit will be essential. Can the observer see sufficient area of the component within the fixed field of view or should the instrument be capable of traversing the subject surface? A larger fixed field of view can be achieved by selecting a 30mm eyepiece in place of a 23mm eyepiece. The instrument can traverse the subject by incorporating a second and may be a third rack and pinion into the mounting mechanism. Do we need illumination? It doesn t matter how good the microscope optics are, the instrument will be difficult to use if the subject being inspected is poorly illuminated. Lighting can be from below the subject, to give high contrast profiles, diffuse from above to show surface detail, or concentrated direct to emphasise critical features. Many types of lighting produce heat which can be a problem when making critical measurements or where the component will be under the microscope for extended periods of time. In these cases cold fibre optic lighting or LED illumination is recommended. The colour of the illumination can enhance the visibility of some subjects and special forms of illumination such as phase contrast and polarisation can be beneficial when dealing with difficult subjects. Tungsten filament light sources tend to give a yellowish tint to the subject, but have low cost power supplies. Quartz iodide, halogen and similar sources give whiter light and are readily available in ratings up to 150watts, but they require more expensive power supplies. LED illumination can take the form of ring lights, arrays and can be linked to fibre optic arms for more targeted lighting. Is an erect image required? A simple microscope consisting of objective, eyepiece and body tube produces an image that is reversed. The object appears back to front and upside down. In many applications this is acceptable as for example when the microscope is to be used purely for alignment using a crosswire graticule or when a dedicated graticule is used for tolerancing. If the microscope is to be used at high magnification where the operation would have difficulty in positioning the object, it is important that the object moves within the field in the same direction as the operator anticipates. An erect image would be recommended and would be achieved using a 45 or 90 viewing head or the straight view prism. Can the operator work near the object being viewed? There are numerous instances where noise, vibration, fumes, spray, heat etc. would be hazardous for an operator looking into a microscope. Here remote viewing via a CCTV or digital camera and monitor would be desirable. Television or computer link is also useful for instruction, reducing fatigue etc. Monochrome systems are often adequate for profiles of the subject and give higher contrast whereas colour can be beneficial when surface detail is critical. Do we need to capture the images? In many quality control and materials handling environments it is both necessary and beneficial to capture the image of the item being inspected. In these instances a digital or CCTV can be fitted to the system. Digital cameras can be of the type available on the high street or specific microscope cameras that feed directly into a computer and are supplied with imaging software. These microscope camera have the advantage that they can also perform measurements which are stored on both the captured image and as tables that can be exported to spreadsheet and other programmes. A CCTV camera would need to feed into a computer through a frame grabber card to obtain captured images. Help! If you would like help in designing a system to suit your exact requirements then please contact us. It would be very helpful if you can provide us with full details or a sample of the product you want to view/measure and details or pictures of the location where the instrument will be used. Our engineers can then determine the best solution and provide you with a proposal.
