It can be used to detect fake money. a) Name one other use of ultraviolet. b) Ultraviolet is emitted by the sun and travels at a speed of 3 x 10 8 m/s. Given that the distance between the Sun and the Earth is 150 million kilometres. Calculate the: (i) distance between the sun and the Earth in metres. (ii) time it takes the ultraviolet radiation to reach Earth. c) Visible light is also emitted by the sun. How long does visible light take to reach Earth? Give a reason for your answer. d) Name one harmful effect caused by ultraviolet radiation on human beings. e) Calculate the wavelength of ultraviolet radiation if it has a frequency of 2 x Hz. 6 SECTION B This section carries 45 marks. 6. 8 7. This question is about motion. a) You are asked to find your friend s average speed while running a short race on a track. In the space below draw and label the instruments needed to take the required measurements. [4] b) Once you have taken the measurements what is the equation you must use to work out the average speed? [1] c) A car accelerates at 7 m/s 2. This means that its speed increases by m/s every [2] d) Thomas is taking part in a 400 m motorcycle race. He starts from rest at A and accelerates uniformly for 12 seconds reaching a maximum speed of 48 m/s at B. He continues to ride at constant speed till he crosses the finishing line at C. 9 8. This question is about sound waves. a. Modern boats are equipped with devices called echo sounders. (i) What is the meaning of the word echo? [1] These devices use ultrasound (ultrasonic waves). (ii) State a typical value of an ultrasonic frequency. (iii) Why are such devices important in boats and ships? (iv) Ultrasound is also used by different animals. Give two examples of such animals. (v) Mention one other use of ultrasound. b. Elise was watching aerial fireworks with her family at the village feast. She noticed that the flash of the petard is seen much before it is heard. (i) Explain why Elise s observation is correct. [2] (ii) How does the sound produced by the petard reach her ears? (iii) Given that the speed of sound in air was 340 m/s, calculate the distance between the petard and the family if they heard the sound after 2.4 seconds. c. Our sun, like all the other stars, is also a continuous huge explosion of gases. Explain why we cannot hear the sound of these huge explosions from the sun.
