1 equipment review Starmaster s new go-anywhere scope is a quick-change artist with two mounting options. BY VIC WINTER Two scopes in one A new line of Newtonian reflectors from Starmaster Portable Telescopes the Versa series aims at amateur astronomers who want fast setup for visual observing and also imaging capabilities. When you just want a quick look at the sky, the Versa-8 is ready to go as fast as you can set the Dobsonian base down and place the tube assembly into it. When you want to track or photograph objects, it takes only 5 minutes to add the ring assembly that allows the tube to ride on any German equatorial mount. The Versa telescope line is available in both 8- and 11-inch models. The 8-inch Versa, which I tested, is surprisingly light. The tube assembly weighs less than 35 pounds (16 kg) with everything including the counterweight attached. The tube measures just under 48 inches (122 cm), so it can rest easily in the backseat of most cars and trucks. With the scope set up as a Dobsonian-mounted reflector, you can observe the stars less than 2 minutes after arriving at your site. Optional rotating rings allow you to connect the Versa-8 s tube to various equatorial mounts. The rings install easily. The 8-inch, f/5.6 Zambuto mirror sits in a six-point flotation cell with adjustable edge supports. The secondary mirror measures 1.52 inches. All views through this scope were crisp and sharp from edge to edge. During nights when the seeing was good, the Versa-8 gave me exceptional visual and photographic planetary views. All accessories that come with the Versa-8 are top-notch. The two-speed Feathertouch focuser accommodates both FOR QUICK SETUp, add the optional rocker box. Place the optical-tube assembly in the cradle, and you re ready to observe. Vic Winter is a longtime amateur astronomer and imager who, with his wife Jen, operates Astronomical Tours in Warrensburg, Missouri. A RIGEL QUIKFINDER attaches to a mount that you can move to any position along the Versa-8 s outer ring. 90 astronomy APRIL 06 THE SECONDARY-MIRROR assembly contains a built-in dew heater powered by a 9-volt battery Kalmbach Publishing Co. This material may not be reproduced in any form without permission from the publisher. THE FEATHERTOUCH FOCUSER operates at two speeds. It accommodates both 2" and 1 1 4" eyepieces (with a supplied adapter).
2 STARMASTER S VERSA-8 offers observers a quick setup with the Dobsonian-mounted option. By adding optional rotating rings, the 8-inch Newtonian reflector can be guided via an equatorial mount. ALL PHOTOS: ASTRONOMY: WILLIAM ZUBACK
3 starmaster s versa-8 includes two light shrouds that help you deal with unwanted light because light pollution can be a problem for strut-supported Newtonian reflectors. One shroud envelops the primary mirror. The other shroud, shown above, covers the front of the optical-tube assembly. The left image shows the light shroud in its retracted position. On the right, the flexible shroud is deployed. s p e c i f i c a t i o n s Starmaster Versa-8 8-inch f/5.6 Newtonian reflector 1.52-inch secondary mirror Secondary-mirror dew heater Two-speed Feathertouch focuser (accommodates both 1 1 4" and 2" eyepieces) Sliding stainless-steel counterweight Movable zero-power finder price: Optical-tube assembly: $2,895 Rotating rings with dovetail plate: $265 Two-piece travel-truss system: $95 Altitude-azimuth rocker box: $295 contact information: Starmaster Portable Telescopes 2160 Birch Road Arcadia, KS [t] [w] 2" and 1 1 4" eyepieces. The built-in secondary mirror s dew heater is handy for nights when water seems to drip off the scope constantly. Two shrouds reduce unwanted light from creeping through the open-truss design and onto the mirrors. You can place a unity-power finder scope anywhere on the end ring a handy design. All tube components are anodized aluminum, which provides a lightweight but rigid truss system. You ll need only one tool a Phillips screwdriver to assemble or disassemble the entire telescope, including the altitude-azimuth rocker box. To put the Versa-8 to the ultimate travel test, I took it on a cruise of the Galapagos Islands off the coast of South America and used it to view the April 8, 2005, total solar eclipse. Before leaving, I disassembled the Versa-8, down to the last nut and bolt, and packed everything into a small cardboard box. I carefully covered the mirror with lens paper that wouldn t scratch it, bubblewrapped it, and placed it in my carry-on luggage. Everything with the exception of the truss tubes fits into a Pelican case that meets airline-baggage size limits. I packed the truss tubes in a hard-shell golfbag travel case I normally use to transport a German equatorial mount. Views of the night sky from the equator were breathtaking and demonstrated the quality of the Versa-8 s optics. (Starmaster s president, Rick Singmaster, tests each telescope under the stars prior to shipping them directly to customers.) The ship s gentle motion moved the target objects in and out of the field of view, but I minimized this problem by using wide-field eyepieces. On the open sea 1,200 miles (1,930 km) west of the islands where the eclipse occurred observing was more difficult because the swells rose higher. Besides visual observing, I wanted to photograph the eclipse. The adjustable focuser mounting plate came in handy when I attached a large-format camera to the Versa-8. Through a full-aperture solar filter, I found the telescope easy to focus when I aimed it at the Sun. The telescope s smooth motions made keeping the Sun centered in the field of view easy despite the ship s side-to-side motion. To make traveling with the Versa-8 easier, Starmaster offers an optional set of truss tubes that split into two sections and can fit in your luggage. When assembled, which takes only a few seconds, the truss tubes rigidity surprised me. You won t have any flexure problems between the primary and secondary mirrors. So, opt for the best of both worlds quick, Dobsonian-mounted observing and equatorially mounted tracking and imaging. If you want this package in one telescope, take a close look at the Versa line. X 92 astronomy APRIL 06
4 THE TUBULAR STRUTS support the telescope s optics and accessories. You can order them either as one-piece units or as the travel-system option, where each strut breaks down into two pieces. This allows them to fit into standard luggage. THE ROTATING RING ASSEMBLY attaches to the central support ring on the Versa-8. This optional accessory allows you to mount the telescope to an equatorial platform. Starmaster Telescopes will machine the dovetail assembly (at bottom) to fit your drive. THE STAINLESS-STEEL COUNTERWEIGHT slides back and forth, allowing you to use eyepieces or cameras of different weights. Starmaster includes the adjustable counterweight as standard equipment on the Versa
