1 2018 Crafts Competition by William Bill Slough (TX) The 2018 National Convention in York, PA, was wonderful. Among the successes of the Convention was the beautiful display of entries in the National Crafts Competition. The Committee would like to thank the entrants from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and all the entrants from the United States. This year we had an international representation, and we hope this will continue as more International Chapters join the NAWCC. I thank the Crafts Committee for their work in putting on the Competition. They helped check in entrants, made sure they filled out forms, and placed their items in the room. They also helped visitors to view and vote for their favorite entry as well as assisted with the tabulation on the judging and the display of winners with ribbons and medals. The members are Chair William Bill Slough, Teresa Downs, Hugh Slough, Cathy Slough, and the many volunteers who came by to help. The Crafts Committee thanks all the judges who gave their time at the show to help with the Competition. Entries were submitted for 16 of 27 classes, offering a variety of items. The Crafts Committee thanks each contestant for their work and effort to bring their items to the Competition. 2 People s Choice Award Eric Ryback Class 7 Other Material Clock Cases: FIRST PLACE Eric submitted an accurate detailed reproduction of the E. Howard Clock Co. No Bracket Clock. Griffin with Pocket Watch portion only. The original material is still under research but more than likely made from wood with a slight possibility of being cast iron. There were only three recorded Griffins made. The replica is made completely of bronze including the working pocket watch. The pocket watch case was gold leafed. Class 1 Single-Train Clock Movements-Metal FIRST PLACE: Richard Ketchen (top, immediate right) Class 4 Complicated Clock Movements: SECOND PLACE Timepiece Design: THIRD PLACE Richard submitted a tallcase regulator with a simple calendar showing the date of the month. The clock movement is made in the style of Charles Fasoldt. This is not a copy of any one clock but there is precedent for almost every part of the clock movements on one of the many Fasoldt clocks that he has restored. His design goal was to make a clock that is so pure Fasoldt detail that Mr. Fasoldt himself would look at it and say, Yes, that s my work but I don t remember this one. He deviated slightly from the originals by jeweling the unlocking block that plays into the fork. Also, he used a hardened steel screw working against a jeweled surface. Fasoldt used a clear jewel on the pallet on the end of the gravity arm; he used a piece of a ruby. THIRD PLACE: William McCoy (below) Class 22 Horological Parts: FIRST PLACE Class 3 Clock Movements / Wood FIRST PLACE: Chris Gervascio (below, right) Class 4 Complicated Clock Movements: THIRD PLACE Chris entered a wood tallcase clock movement with a double three-legged escapement. The goal of his design was to create a highly accurate wood clock. The clock and all its components were of cherry and birch plywood wheels with laurel pinions. He used birch plywood plates with lignum vitae bearings. Male plate pillars with ebony headed plate screws. The escapement is constructed from cherry plywood and laurel. The movement is wound automatically with an endless chain winding system. NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin November December
4 Timepiece Design FIRST PLACE: Trevor Herbstreit Trevor designed this clock as both a modern artistic impression and a practical timepiece that is fit for purpose. As a completed item mounted in its finely crafted, yet simplistically designed case, it is apparent that it would display well in homes or businesses of many genres including public spaces. Its pleasing forms and gentle motion mesmerize those who gaze upon it. The clock will continue to run in excess of seven days when the weight is wound to apex. The timekeeping can vary a couple of minutes a week due to the complicated pendulum design. The design and production of this clock was done by hand except for some of the small machine screws. Class 6 Wood Clock Case Solid or Veneered FIRST PLACE: Steven M. Lash (below) This clock is an eighteenth-century ebony English bracket clock that was designed after a circa 1790 John Grant bracket clock. The movement is from a Keiningeer 150th Mozart Anniversary mantel clock that chimes A Little Night Music on the hour. The clock also contains two REUGE 72 note triple melody Mozart music box movements in the drawer under the dial. One plays Mozart s Glockenspiel from the Magic Flute, The Turkish March, and The Minuet. The other plays three parts of Mozart s Elvira. SECOND PLACE: Michael G. Schad Class 20 Wood Carving: FIRST PLACE Michael entered an original concept and design from working drawings. The clock had a hand-painted dial with wood carvings. The case was made and constructed from hand selected and planed cherry wood. He even carved the animated figures, used a mechanical linkage, and an 8-day German movement and hands. 5 Class 9 Watchcases Any Material FIRST PLACE: Ray Porter Ray entered a sterling silver and 18-kt. gold pocket watch case made to fit a circa1860 B.D. Bingham, Nashua, NH, movement. Bingham was the founder of New Hampshire s only watch company, The Nashua Watch Co. The movement with serial number 3 is formerly from the Selchow collection and is believed to be a prototype for a 16-size Nashua model that was never produced. The case back features an enamel scene on 24-kt. gold symbolizing the sun setting on the failed Nashua venture in SECOND PLACE: Randall Zadar (below) Zadar silver watch. THIRD PLACE: Randall Zadar Class 13 Painted Dials: FIRST PLACE Zadar 2018 painted dial watch. Class 10 Watch Restoration FIRST PLACE: Shaun Clarke (below) Pocket watch restoration from Hurricane Harvey. This watch was found in a home that was flooded by Hurricane Harvey in Class 12 Clock Restoration FIRST PLACE: John Evans John restored an Ansonia figural clock Vassar, circa He began by completely disassembling the case and movement. Used solvents with brass brushes, steel wool, scrapers, and picks. All the clock parts were bathed, rinsed, and dried. The multiple layers of finish were applied to achieve the over 100-year-old fine antique look of the completed piece. NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin November December
6 SECOND PLACE: Edward Bikowitz Edward entered a restoration of an F. C. Andrews OG-style clock. The clock has triple weights with a built-in alarm with three winding holes in the wooden dial. The clock was made in Bristol, CT, between 1835 and The clock has original glass, which he believes was made by William Fenn when he was making clock glass. Class 14 Reverse Painting on Glass FIRST PLACE: Lee Davis Class 18 Gold Leafing: FIRST PLACE Lee created a gold leaf and reverse painting on glass of Father Time celebrating NAWCC s 75th Anniversary. Class 21 Engraving and Decorative Parts FIRST PLACE: David Lindow The pendulum bob was engraved on a Rose Engine Lathe.
