1 A NEW PINCHING THEORE FOR COPLETE SELF-SHRINKERS AND ITS GENERALIZATION arxiv: v [math.dg] 5 Dec 207 LI LEI, HONGWEI XU, AND ZHIYUAN XU Abstract. In this paper, we firstly verify that if is a complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+, and if the squared norm of the second fundamental form of satisfies 0 A 2 8, then A 2 and is a round sphere or a cylinder. ore generally, let be a complete λ-hypersurface with polynomial volume growth in R n+ with λ 0. Then we prove that there exists an positive constant γ, such that if λ γ and the squared norm of the second fundamental form of satisfies 0 A 2 β λ 8, then A 2 β λ, λ > 0 and is a cylinder. Here β λ = 2 (2 +λ2 + λ λ 2 +4).. Introduction Suppose X : R n+ is an isometric immersion. If the position vector X evolves in the direction of the mean curvature vector H, this yields a solution of mean curvature flow: { t X(x,t) = H(x,t), x, X(x,0) = X(x). An important class of solutions to the above mean curvature flow equations are self-shrinkers [7], which satisfy (.) H = X N, where X N is the projection of X on the unit normal vector ξ, i.e., X N = X,ξ. We remark that some authors have a factor 2 on the right-hand side of the defining equation for self-shrinkers. Rigidity problems of self-shrinkers have been studied extensively. As is known, there are close relations between self-shrinkers and minimal submanifolds. But they are quite different on many aspects. We refer the readers to [4] for the rigidity problems of minimal submanifolds. In [], Abresch Langer classified all smooth closed self-shrinker curves in R 2. In 990, Huisken [7] provedthat the only smooth closed self-shrinkers with nonnegative mean curvature in R n+ are round spheres for n 2. Based on the work due to Huisken [7, 8], Colding inicozzi [] proved that if is an n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with nonnegative mean curvature and polynomial volume growth in R n+, then is isometric to either 2000 athematics Subject Classification. 54C24; 53C40. 2 2 LI LEI, HONGWEI XU, AND ZHIYUAN XU the hyperplane R n, a round sphere or a cylinder. In [2], Brendle verified that the round sphere is the only compact embedded self-shrinker in R 3 of genus zero. In 20, Le Sesum [20] proved that any n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+ whose squared norm of the second fundamental form satisfies A 2 < must be a hyperplane. Afterwards, Cao Li [3] generalized this rigidity result to arbitrary codimension and proved that if is an n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+q, and if A 2, then must be one of the generalized cylinders. In 204, Ding Xin [3] proved the following rigidity theorem for self-shrinkers in the Euclidean space. Theorem A. Let be an n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+. If the squared norm of the second fundamental form satisfies 0 A 2 500, then A 2 and is a round sphere or a cylinder. In [8], Cheng Wei proved that if is an n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+, and if 0 A 2 3 7, where A is constant, then A 2 =. Recently, Xu Xu [37] improve Theorem A and proved the following rigidity theorem Theorem B. Let be an n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+. If the squared norm of the second fundamental form satisfies 0 A 2 2, then A 2 and is a round sphere or a cylinder. In this paper, we firstly prove the following rigidity theorem for self-shrinkers in the Euclidean space. Theorem.. Let be an n-dimensional complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in R n+. If the squared norm of the second fundamental form satisfies 0 A 2 8, then A 2 and is one of the following cases: (i) the round sphere S n ( n); (ii) the cylinder S k ( k) R n k, k n. ore generally, we consider the rigidity of λ-hypersurfaces. The concept of λ- hypersurfaces was introduced independently by Cheng Wei [7] via the weighted volume-preserving mean curvature flow and cgonagle Ross [25] via isoperimetric type problem in a Gaussian weighted Euclidean space. Precisely, the hypersurfaces of Euclidean space satisfying the following equation are called λ-hypersurfaces: (.2) H = X N +λ, where X N is the projection of X on the unit normal vector ξ and λ is a constant. In recent years, the rigidity of λ-hypersurfaces has been investigated by several authors [5, 7, 5, 33]. In [5], Guang showed that if is a λ-hypersurface with polynomial volume growth in R n+, and if A 2 α λ, then must be one of the generalized cylinders, where α λ = 2 (2 + λ2 λ λ 2 +4). In the second part of this paper, we prove the following second pinching theorem for λ-hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space. Theorem.2. Let be an n-dimensional complete λ-hypersurface with polynomial volume growth in R n+ with λ 0. There exists an positive constant γ, such that if λ γ and the squared norm of the second fundamental form satisfies 0 A 2 β λ 8, then A 2 β λ, λ > 0 and must be the cylinder ( ) S λ 2 +4 λ R n. Here β λ = 2 (2+λ2 + λ λ 2 +4). 2
3 A NEW PINCHING THEORE FOR COPLETE SELF-SHRINKERS AND ITS GENERALIZATION3 2. rigidity of self-shrinkers Let be an n-dimensional complete hypersurface in R n+. We shall make use of the following convention on the range of indices: i,j,k,... n. We choose a local orthonormal frame field {e,e 2,...,e n+ } near a fixed point x over R n+ such that {e i } n i= are tangent to and e n+ equals to the unit normal vector ξ. Let {ω,ω 2,...,ω n+ } be the dual frame fields of {e,e 2,...,e n+ }. Denote by R ijkl, A := i,j h ij ω i ω j, H := TraceA and S := TraceA 2 the Riemann curvature tensor, the second fundamental form, the mean curvature and the squared norm of the second fundamental form of, respectively. We denote the first, the second and the third covariant derivatives of the second fundamental form of by A = i,j,kh ijk ω i ω j ω k, 2 A = 3 A = i,j,k,l,m i,j,k,l The Gauss and Codazzi equations are given by h ijkl ω i ω j ω k ω l, h ijklm ω i ω j ω k ω l ω m. (2.) R ijkl = h ik h jl h il h jk, (2.2) h ijk = h ikj. We have the Ricci identities on (2.3) h ijkl h ijlk = h im R mjkl + m m h mj R mikl, (2.4) h ijklm h ijkml = r h rjk R rilm + r h irk R rjlm + r h ijr R rklm. We choose a local orthonormal frame {e i } such that h ij = µ i δ ij at x. By the Gauss equation (2.) and the Ricci identity (2.3), we have (2.5) t ij := h ijij h jiji = µ i µ j (µ i µ j ). Set u ijkl = 4 (h ijkl +h lijk +h klij +h jkli ). Then we have (h 2 ijkl u 2 ijkl) 6 [(h ijij h jiji ) 2 +(h jiji h ijij ) 2 ] 6 i,j,k,l i j (2.6) i.e., = 3 4 G, (2.7) 2 A G, where G = t 2 ij = 2(Sf 4 f3) 2 and f k = TraceA k = i,j i inicozzi introduced the linear operator L = X, ( ) = e X 2 2 Div ) (e X 2 2 ( ). µ k i. 4 4 LI LEI, HONGWEI XU, AND ZHIYUAN XU They showed that L is self-adjoint respect to the measure ρdµ, where ρ = e X 2 2. Let be a self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth. By a computation (see [3, 37]), we have following equalities (2.8) L A 2 = 2 A 2 2 A 4 +2 A 2, (2.9) S 2 = 2 LS2 +2S 2 (S ) 2S A 2, (2.0) 2 A 2 = 2 L A 2 +( A 2 2) A 2 +3(B 2B 2 )+ 3 2 S 2, (2.) where B = i,j,k,l,m (B 2B 2 )ρdµ = h ijk h ijl h km h ml and B 2 = ( 2 G 4 S 2) ρdµ, i,j,k,l,m h ijk h klm h im h jl. Now we are in a position to prove our rigidity theorem for self-shrinkers in the Euclidean space. Proof of Theorem.. From (2.7), (2.0) and (2.), we have (B 2B 2 )ρdµ ( = 2 G 4 S 2) ρdµ ( A 2 ) 4 S 2 ρdµ [ 2 = 3 (S 2) A 2 +2(B 2B 2 )+ 3 ] (2.2) 4 S 2 ρdµ. This implies that (2.3) (B 2B 2 )ρdµ [ 2 3 (2 S) A 2 3 ] 4 S 2 ρdµ. By Lemma 4.2 in [3] and Young s inequality, for σ > 0, we have 3(B 2B 2 ) (S +C G /3 ) A 2 (2.4) S A C σ 2 G+ 2 3 C σ A 3, 2 where C = Notice that 6+03/2 (2.5) A, S ρdµ = A LSρ dµ. This together with (2.8) implies ( ) A 3 ρdµ = LS S +S2 A ρ dµ 2 = [(S 2 S) A 2 ] A, S ρdµ [ (S 2 S) A +ǫ 2 A 2 + ] (2.6) 6ǫ S 2 ρdµ.
5 A NEW PINCHING THEORE FOR COPLETE SELF-SHRINKERS AND ITS GENERALIZATION5 From (2.0), (2.), (2.4), (2.6), we have 3 (B 2B 2 )ρdµ (S A C σ 2 G+ 23 ) C σ A 3 ρdµ ( S A 2 + ) 3 C σ 2 G ρdµ + 2 [ 3 C σ (S 2 S) A +ǫ 2 A 2 + ] 6ǫ S 2 ρdµ = [S A C σ (B 2 2B )] S 2 ρdµ + 2 [ 3 C σ (S 2 S) A + ] 6ǫ S 2 ρdµ C σ ǫ [(S 2) A 2 +3(B 2B 2 )+ 32 ] (2.7) S 2 ρdµ. Thus, we obtain (2.8) 3θ (B 2B 2 )ρdµ [ S + 2 ] 3 C σ ǫ(s 2) A 2 ρdµ ( + 6 C σ 2 +C σ ǫ+ ) 24ǫ C σ C σ (S 2 S) A ρdµ, S 2 ρdµ where θ = ( 2 9 C σ C σ ǫ ). We restrict σ and ǫ such that θ 0. Combining (2.3) and (2.8), we have [ 0 S +( 2 ] 3 C σ ǫ+2θ)(s 2) A 2 ρdµ ( + 6 C σ 2 +C σ ǫ+ 24ǫ C σ + 9 ) 4 θ S 2 ρdµ + 2 (2.9) 3 C σ (S 2 S) A ρdµ. To simplify the notation, we put L := 2 3 C σ ǫ+2θ, L 2 := 6 C σ 2 +C σ ǫ+ 24ǫ C σ θ. Then (2.9) is reduced to 0 [S +L (S 2)] A 2 ρdµ +L 2 S 2 ρdµ+ 2 (2.20) 3 C σ (S 2 S) A ρdµ.

For κ > 0, we have S(S ) A ρd 2(+δ)κ S(S )ρdµ + S(S ) A 2 ρdµ 8(+δ)κ 2(+δ)κ A 2 ρdµ + (2.22) (S ) A 2 ρd. 8κ Substituting (2.2) and (2.22) into (2.20), we obtain 0 [(+L )(S )+ L ] A 2 ρdµ +2L 2 ( S +δ) A 2 ρdµ C σ (+δ)κ A 2 ρdµ + 2κ C σ (S ) A 2 ρd ( = +L 2L 2 + ) 2κ C σ (S ) A 2 ρdµ [ + L + 4 ( ) ] 4 (2.23) 3 C σ κ+ 3 C σ κ+2l 2 δ A 2 ρdµ. Let σ = 0.66, ǫ = and κ = By a computation, we have θ > 0, +L 2L 2 + 2κ C σ < 0, L C σ κ < 0.452, 4 3 C σ κ+2l 2 < We take δ = /8. Then the coefficients of the integrals in (2.23) are both negative. Therefore, we have A 0 and S, i.e., either the round sphere S n ( n), or the cylinder S k ( k) R n k, k n. 3. rigidity of λ-hypersurfaces Let be an n-dimensional complete λ-hypersurface with polynomial volume growth in R n+. We adopt the same notations as in Section 2. To simplify the computation, we choose local frame {e i }, such that ei e j = 0 at p, i.e., ei e j = h ij ξ, and h ij = µ i δ ij. Then we have (3.) ei H = ei X,ξ = h ik X,e k,

Taking f k = TraceA k = i µ k i, we obtain L A 2 = A 2 X, A 2 = 2 i,j h ij h ij +2 A 2 2 i,j,kh ij h ijk X,e k = 2( i,j h ij ei ej H +H i,j,kh ij h jk h ki A 4 ) +2 A 2 2 i,j,kh ij h ijk X,e k (3.3) = 2 A 2 2 A 4 +2λf 3 +2 A 2. Proof of Theorem.2. Putting F λ = A 4 A 2 λf 3, we have (3.4) F λ ρd = A 2 ρd. We also have (3.5) S 2 = 2 LS2 +2SF λ 2S A 2. Notice that (3.6) F λ A 2 ( A 2 λ A ). If A 2 β λ := 2 (2 + λ2 + λ λ 2 +4), then F λ 0. oreover, if F λ = 0, then A 2 = β λ. Denote by α λ = 2 (2+λ2 λ λ 2 +4). When β λ A 2 β λ +δ, we have the following upper bound for F λ. F λ A 2 ( A 2 + λ A ) = A 2 ( A + β λ )( A + α λ ) ( A 2 β λ +q λ ) ( A 2 ( A 2 βλ α ) λ β λ +q λ ) + βλ + α λ (3.7) A 2 ( A 2 β λ +r λ ), where q λ = λ λ 2 +4, r λ = q λ +λ 2 + λ δ λ For 2 A and the integral of B 2B 2, we obtain the following lemma.
