Can you write it in the form p, where p and q are integers and q 0? q Solution : Consider the definition of a rational number. A rational number is the one that can be written in the form of p, where p and q are integers and q q 0. Zero can be written as 0, 0, 0, 0, Zero can be written as well 0, 0, 0, So, we arrive at the conclusion that 0 can be written in the form of integers ( q can be positive or negative integers). p, where p and q are q Therefore, zero is a rational number. Question : Find six rational numbers between and 4. Solution : We know that there are infinite rational numbers between any two numbers. Give reasons for your answers. (i) Every natural number is a whole number. (ii) Every integer is a whole number. (iii) Every rational number is a whole number. Solution 4: (i) Consider the whole numbers and natural numbers separately. We know that whole number series is 0,,,, 4, Number Systems

3 We know that natural number series is,,, 4,5.... So, we can conclude that every natural number lie in the whole number series. Diagrammatically, we can represent as follows: Therefore, we conclude that, yes every natural number is a whole number. (ii) Consider the integers and whole numbers separately. We know that integers are those numbers that can be written in the form of p, where q =. q Now, considering the series of integers, we have 4,,,, 0,,,, We know that whole number are 0,,,, 4, We can conclude that whole number series lie in the series of integers. But every integer does not appear in the whole number series. Therefore, we conclude that every integer is not a whole number. But, clearly every whole number is an integer. (iii) Consider the rational numbers and whole numbers separately. 4 We know that every whole number can be written in the form of p q as follows 0 4 5,,,,,. We conclude that every whole number is a rational number. But, every rational number (/, /, /4,/5,/6. ) is not a whole number. Therefore, we conclude that every rational number is not a whole number. But, clearly every whole number is a rational number. Exercise (.) Question : State whether the following statements are true or false. Justify your answers. (i) Every irrational number is a real number. Solution : (i) Consider the irrational numbers and the real numbers separately. The irrational numbers are the numbers that cannot be converted in the form p q, where p and q are integers and q 0. 5 The real number is the collection of rational numbers and irrational numbers. Therefore, we conclude that, every irrational number is a real number. (ii) Consider a number line. on a number line, we can represent negative as well as positive numbers. Positive numbers are represented in the form of,.,. But we cannot get a negative number after taking square root of any number. (Eg: 5 = 5i is a complex number (which you will study in higher classes)) Therefore, we conclude that every number point on the number line is not of the form m, where m is a natural number. (iii) Consider the irrational numbers and the real numbers separately. Irrational numbers are the numbers that cannot be converted in the form p q, where p and q are integers and q 0. A real number is the collection of rational numbers (Eg:, irrational numbers (Eg:, π,.000 ).,, ) and 4 5 So, we can conclude that every irrational number is a real number. 6 Question : Are the square roots of all positive integers irrational? If not, give an example of the square root of a number that is a rational number. Solution : Square root of every positive integer will not yield an integer. (Eg:,, 6. ) which are called irrational numbers But 4 is, which is an integer. Therefore, we conclude that square root of every positive integer is not an irrational number. Question : Show how 5 can be represented on the number line. Solution : We need to draw a line segment AB of unit on the number line. Then draw a perpendicular line segment BC at B of units. Then join the points C and A, to form a line segment AC. According to Pythagoras Theorem AC² = AB² +BC² AC² = ² + ² AC² = 4 + = 5 AC = 5 Then draw the arc ACD, to get the number 5 on the number line.. Number Systems 6

8 We observe that while dividing by, the quotient = 0.09 is repeated. Therefore, = or = 0.09, which is a non-terminating and recurring decimal. (iii) 4 = 4 + = + = On dividing by 8, we get while dividing by 8, the remainder is 0.. Number Systems 8

9 Therefore, 4 = 8 8 = 4.5, which is a terminating decimal. (iv) On dividing by, we get while dividing by the remainder is, which will continue to be after carrying out 6 continuous divisions. Perform the division to check your answer. 7 Solution 5: We need to find the number of digits in the recurring block of 7. Let us perform the long division to get the recurring block of 7. 16 We can observe that while dividing by 7 we get 6 number of digits in the repeating block of decimal expansion which will continue to be after carrying out 6 continuous divisions. Therefore, we conclude that = or 7 7 = ,which is a non-terminating and recurring decimal. Question 6: Look at several examples of rational numbers in the form p q (q 0), where p and q are integers with no common factors other than and having terminating decimal representations (expansions). Can you guess what property q must satisfy? Solution 6: Let us we take the examples 5, 5,,, 5 of the form p that are terminating q decimals We can observe that the denominators of the above rational numbers have powers of, 5 or both. Therefore, it is rational number (iv) The given number is a non-terminating recurring decimal, which can be converted into p q form. While, converting into p form, we get q x = (a) 000x = (b). 19 While, subtracting (a) from (b), we get 999x = x 999 Therefore, is a rational number. (v) We can observe that the number is a non-terminating nonrecurring decimal. Thus, non-terminating and non-recurring decimals cannot be converted into p q form. Therefore, we conclude that is an irrational number.. Number Systems 9

This seems to contradict the fact that π is irrational. How will you resolve this d contradiction? Solution : Here, pi = /7 is a rational no. but this is an approximate value. If we divide by 7, the quotient (.4...) is a non-terminating non-recurring number. i.e. it is irrational. Approximate fractions include (in order of increasing accuracy) /7, /06, 55/, 56/6604, 099/0, and / If we divide anyone of these we get, the quotient (.4...) is a non-terminating non-recurring number. i.e. it is irrational Therefore, either circumference (c) or diameter (d) or both can be irrational numbers. Therefore, we can conclude that as such there is no contradiction regarding the value of and we realize that the value of is irrational. Question 4. Represent 9. on the number line. Solution 4: Mark the distance 9. units from a fixed-point A on a given line to obtain a point B such that AB = 9. units. From B mark a distance of unit and mark the point as C. Find the mid-point of AC and mark the point as O. Draw a semi-circle with centre O and radius OC = 5.5 units. Number Systems 4
