1 A First Day Unit First Grade Blue SKies

2 It's my first day of school And "The Kissing Hand" is what we read. It's about a raccoon Who did just as his parents said. Like the raccoon's first day at school I was scared and a little shy. But because of what you said I was brave and I got by. All through the year I'll make more things for you. So as I change and as I learn You can see my growth, too!

3 Usually on the first day, I do the two poems, with the kids handprints on each. The first one I send home, but the one that comes later, I keep for their Memory Book at the end of the year. I use the red hearts that you can buy at Walmart or the ones not used out of the Valentine s Day cards to place in the center or both handprints, as well as the necklace. Here are some photos of the finished ideas included in this unit. For the headband, I always use sentence strips and staple in the back after I measure to fit =)

21 Class Emergent Reader The following 5 pages are a class book for kids to create! Copy the pages, collated (123, 123) and then cut on the dotted line, staple on the left hand side, and you re done! Read the book to students before they create their book. Each page requires that the students trace the sight word was and then draw a picture of Chester when he felt like the word on that page.
