Their overall behavior is determined by short-lasting particle collisions and the interaction between solid and gas phase. Modern simulation techniques that combine computational luid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element methods (DEM) are capable o describing their evolution and provide detailed inormation on what is happening on the particle scale. However, these approaches are limited by small time steps and large numerical costs, which inhibits the investigation o slower long-term processes like heat transer or chemical conversion. In a recent study (Lichtenegger and Pirker, 2016), we have introduced recurrence CFD (rcfd) as a way to decouple ast rom slow degrees o reedom in systems with recurring patterns: A conventional simulation is carried out to capture such coherent structures. Their re-appearance is characterized with recurrence plots that allow us to extrapolate their evolution ar beyond the simulated time. On top o these predicted low ields, any passive or weakly coupled process can then be investigated at ractions o the original computational costs. Here, we present the application o rcfd to heat transer in a labscale luidized bed. Initially hot particles are luidized with cool air and their temperature evolution is recorded. In comparison to conventional CFD-DEM, we observe speed-up actors o about two orders o magnitude at very good accuracy with regard to recent measurements. Keywords: recurrent patterns, luidized beds, multiphase heat and mass transer, multiscale simulations. INTRODUCTION Modeling and simulation o luidized beds is extremely demanding due to the various scales present. In the spatial domain, submillimeter particles are to be contrasted with the geometric dimensions o industrial-size plants. In the temporal domain, collisions set the lower limit o time scales at small ractions o a second while heat transer or chemical conversion happens much more slowly. Substantial progress has been made in up-scaling wellestablished mesoscopic methods like CFD-DEM (Cundall and Strack, 1979; Tsuji et al., 1993) or the two-luid model (TFM) (Anderson and Jackson, 1967; Gidaspow, 1994) to macroscopic sizes. To allow or coarser meshes so that larger systems can be described, sub-grid heterogeneities need to be modeled appropriately (Heynderickx et al., 2004; Igci et al., 2008; Igci and Sundaresan, 2011a,b; Milioli et al., 2013; Ozel et al., 2013; Parmentier et al., 2012; Radl and Sundaresan, 2014; Schneiderbauer et al., 2013; Schneiderbauer and Pirker, 2014; Wang et al., 2008, 2010; Yang et al., 2003; Zhang and VanderHeyden, 2002). Although industrial-size reactors may be simulated with these methods, they are still bound to short-term investigations. Here, we show a systematic way to circumvent this problem and apply it to heat transer in a lab-scale luidized bed. In a recent paper, we introduced the idea o rcfd (Lichtenegger and Pirker, 2016) to time-extrapolate the behavior o systems dominated by reappearing structures. We use ields rom short-term simulations with conventional 47
2 T. Lichtenegger, S. Pirker CFD-DEM or TFM to create long sequences o low patterns with the aid o recurrence plots (Eckmann et al., 1987). On these sequences, we simulate heat transer between gas and solid particles as measured by Patil et al. (Patil et al., 2015) and obtain speed-up actors o about two orders o magnitude. MODEL DESCRIPTION In the ollowing, we briely summarize the CFD-DEM method and reer the interested reader to extensive reviews (Deen et al., 2007; Zhou et al., 2010). Aterwards, the rcfd strategy is explained. Fluid equations I a secondary, particulate phase is present, the Navier Stokes equations or a luid with density ρ and velocity ield u become (Anderson and Jackson, 1967) t α ρ + α ρ u = 0 (1) t α ρ u + α ρ u u = α p + α τ + drag + ext. Various correlations or particle-luid drag drag can be ound in literature, we use one obtained rom lattice-boltzmann simulations (Beetstra et al., 2007). To picture heat transer, we assume incompressible conditions and neglect contributions due to pressure variations to the enthalpy transport equation rom which we derive C (p) (2) t α ρ T +C (p) α ρ u T = α k (e) T + Q p-. (3) Both heat conduction α k (e) T and particle-luid heat transer Q p- have to be modeled with empirical correlations (Syamlal and Gidaspow, 1985; Gunn, 1978). Note that or incompressible lows, Eq. (3) is decoupled rom Eqs. (1) and (2) i density and viscosity are assumed to be temperatureindependent. Particle equations Solid particles are oten modeled as perect spheres which interact with each other via contact orces F (p-p) i, with a surrounding luid F (p-) i and possibly other sources F (ext) i. For each particle i with mass m i, Newton s second law m i v i = F (p-p) i + F (p-) i + F (ext) i (4) determines its trajectory. The particle-particle orce F (p-p) ( i = F (n) i, j + ) F(t) i, j j i on particle i due to all surrounding particles j consists o normal and tangential components which depend on the relative positions and velocities o i and j and are oten described via spring-dashpot models (Cundall and Strack, 1979). The interaction o particles with a luid F (p-) i is related to the drag orce and the pressure gradient in Eq. (2). Each particle is assumed to have a homogeneously distributed temperature T i. We neglect particle-particle heat exchange because o the extremely short collision times so that only heat transer rom/to the luid can change a particle s temperature via (5) m i C p (p) Ṫ i = πk D i Nu p (T i T (r i )) (6) in terms o the Nusselt number Nu p (Gunn, 1978). Recurrence CFD In a irst step, we deine norms or recurrence and dissimilarity o states, respectively, e.g. R(t,t ) 1 1 d N 3 r ( α (r,t) α (r,t ) ) 2 (7) D(t,t ) 1 R(t,t ), (8) to assess the similarity o low ields obtained rom the solution o Eqs. (1) (4) at two times t,t t max. N max t,t d 3 r ( α (r,t) α (r,t ) ) 2 ensures normalization in Eq. (7). We stress that it is an assumption that similarity according to Eq. (7) carries over to other ields like the particle velocity u p. As a matter o act, it has to be checked a posteriori i they are suiciently correlated to justiy it. Compared to binary recurrence statistics (Eckmann et al., 1987), deinition (7) allows or continuous degrees o similarity, which is reerred to as unthresholded recurrence statistics (Marwan et al., 2007). Given a large enough recurrence statistics R(t,t ), it is possible to extrapolate the underlying system s behavior. Starting at some given begin time t (b) i, one randomly picks an interval o length t i. In this study, we used uniormly distributed t i in the range o t max /20 and t max /5. Within t i, the corresponding ields are taken as irst elements o the desired sequence. Then, the most similar state to that at the end o the interval t (e) i = t (b) i + t i is identiied with the aid o R(t,t ) and reconstruction is continued rom there on. Again, an interval length is chosen and its ields are appended to the sequence. Obviously, this procedure can be repeated arbitrarily oten. Figure 2 shows an example o two states that could be identiied with each other because o a suiciently high degree o similarity. Figure 1: Degree o dissimilarity D(t,t ) or the irst 5s o simulation o a luidized bed corresponding to 200 snapshots. Besides the main diagonal with dissimilarity 0, a pattern o local minima and maxima is clearly visible, corresponding to more or less similar states. Their alignment approximately parallel to the main diagonal indicates pseudo-periodic behavior. (9) 48
3 Extremely ast simulations o heat transer in luidized beds / CFD Finally, any passive processes can now be simulated on these ields in an extremely eicient way. The CFD-side problem o Eqs. (1), (2) and (3) is replaced with the temperature equation (3) alone. Other inormation like volume raction, density and velocity are obtained rom the recurrence process, only the temperature distribution is really calculated. The motion o the particles is simpliied with tracers that ollow the solid phase s velocity ield u (rec) p and undergo random luctuations dw i, viz. dr i = u (rec) p (r i,t)dt + 2D (rec) (r i,t)dw i. (10) The latter act to avoid too high tracer concentrations in comparison to actual solid particles. A phenomenological, possibly position-dependent parameter D (rec) controls the strength o the luctuations, e.g. via [ ] max α p (r,t) α (rec) D (rec) p (r,t),0 (r,t) = D 0. (11) α p (r,t) The constant D 0 has to be chosen empirically such that neither excessive clustering occurs nor that particle diusion is enhanced dramatically. In neither case, the passive process under consideration could be pictured accurately. SIMULATION SETUP We set up simulations in close resemblance to recent experiments and simulations o heat transer in a luidized bed (Patil et al., 2015) which we took as reerence data. A 8cm 1.5cm 25cm cuboid was discretized into equal cells and approximately mm spheres with material values o glass and initial temperature T p (0) = 90 C were inserted. Air with ambient temperature T (0) = 20 C luidized them with a supericial inlet velocity o u inlet = 1.2m/s and slowly cooled them. Since unresolved CFD-DEM requires larger cells than particles, the above grid could not be used to resolve the lux o heat through the domain walls happening over a very thin layer. Instead, its thickness was introduced as modeling parameter within reasonable bounds to control heat loss through the walls (Patil et al., 2015). Since the ocus o this work was rather the comparison o ull CFD-DEM with rcfd than with experiments, we chose its value (in roughly the same range, but somewhat larger) such that our CFD- DEM results were in agreement with the reerence simulation. We opted or this procedure because in contrast to the reerence simulation which was carried out or an ideal, compressible gas, we approximated the system as incompressible to enable a recurrence-based treatment. Future work will address this shortcoming (Lichtenegger et al., 2017) and allow or a meaningul comparison with measurements. For the ull CFD-DEM simulations, Eqs. (1) (3) were solved under incompressible conditions employing the PISO algorithm (Issa, 1986). On the DEM side, we used velocity- Verlet integration (Verlet, 1967) or Eq. (4). The ull CFD- DEM simulations were carried out or 10s process time, the irst 5s were then used as basis or rcfd. We stress that this duration was chosen quite generously and smaller recurrence statistics would probably work equally well. In this study, each particle was represented by exactly one tracer. O course, one could also employ a parcel approach to combine clusters o particles into ewer tracers or conversely try to resolve coarse-grained CFD-DEM data with higher numbers o tracers. (a) (b) Figure 2: Example o two equivalent states in the sense o dissimilarity norm Fig. 1. Although the volume raction ields are not identical, they are close enough so that substituting one with the other does not lead to any signiicant inaccuracies. 49
4 T. Lichtenegger, S. Pirker Special care had to be taken with the choice o the luctuation control parameter D 0. We ound empirically that with dw distributed uniormly on the unit sphere, D 0 = 10 4 m 2 /s was large enough to avoid too high particle concentrations and suiciently small not to increase particle diusion and consequently heat transer and the mean cooling rate. RESULTS According to the rcfd strategy outlined above, the irst quantity to look at is the dissimilarity norm (or equally useul the recurrence norm) displayed in Fig snapshots corresponding to 5s real time are compared with each other, leading to a structure o local minima and maxima approximately parallel to the main diagonal. These minima are caused by very similar states that evolve in an analogous ashion, which demonstrates local pseudo-periodicity. The degree o similarity is indicated in Fig. 2. Two volume raction ields which give rise to a local minimum in the dissimilarity norm are shown. While small quantitative dierences can be ound, their qualitative eatures clearly agree: a large bubble was ormed in the center o the bed with a ew particles moving downwards in the middle o the bubble. Figure 3: Particle mean temperature over time. Per construction, the ull CFD simulations closely resembled the reerence data (Patil et al., 2015). As a consequence, the cooling rate was somewhat too low in comparison with measurements. Most importantly, recurrence CFD led to almost identical results as the ull model. I such semiquantitative agreement was suicient to obtain a meaningul extrapolation o the luidized bed s evolution is inally answered by looking at the particle mean temperatures rom ull and recurrence-based simulations in Fig. 3. As discussed above, the thickness o the boundary layer over which temperature drops to its wall value allowed or some tuning o the cooling rate. With a value to match the reerence data (Patil et al., 2015), the agreement o the present CFD-DEM results with them was o course to be expected. More importantly, however, the curves rom rcfd and CFD- DEM agree very well. Ater 10s their deviation is much less than 1 C at a speed-up o approximately two orders o magnitude. Furthermore, Fig. 3 demonstrates that particle cooling happened over much longer times than the bed s ast dynamics. Such a clear separation o scales is clearly vital or the rcfd procedure because it minimizes the impact o switching between most similar but nevertheless dierent low states on the passive process under consideration. CONCLUSION AND OUTLOOK In this paper, we have demonstrated how to decouple the ast dynamics o a luidized bed rom the much slower heat transer between solid particles and surrounding gas to accelerate the calculations. To acilitate the procedure, we assumed incompressible conditions in contrast to the treatment in the reerence simulation (Patil et al., 2015) and used a tuning parameter or wall heat loss to match our ull CFD-DEM simulations to them. Upon these results, we built the recurrence statistics used or rcfd. Future work (Lichtenegger et al., 2017) will deal with rcfd or the compressible case, where we expect a superposed transient behavior due to a slow decrease o the mean gas temperature in the center o the bed. Besides more realistic results rom the CFD-DEM calculation or a meaningul comparison with measurements, this will allow to study the bed over much longer times. Furthermore, a detailed perormance analysis o the method s implementation might reveal optimization potential or even aster simulations.
