1 7th Grade Task for today: Complete the Magnetism and Electricity task sheet. Be sure to complete both sides Use pages for Magnetism Use pages for Electricity 1. How do magnec poles interact? 6 18. How are electric charges and magnetism related to each other? Because like charges repel each other and opposite charges attract to each other. This also occurs with magnets as well. 19. What are conductors and insulators? Describe how these are related to the flow of electrons through a circuit. A conductor is a material through which charges can flow easily. In a condcutor, as the electrons are able to move throughout the conductor they form an electric current. An insulator is a material through wihich chares cannot easily flow. In an insulator, the electrons do not move easily there for they are used to stop the flow of electrons. 20. Draw and label the parts to a circuit. Define each part within the picture (Battery, Resistor, Switch) Switch Used to open and close the circuit Battery the energy source that makes the charges move around the circuit Resistor A light bulb is a resistor that transforms electrical energy into light. 6

7 21. On an appliance cord, what is the conductor and what is the insulator? The conductor would be the metal wire. The insulator would be the plastic or rubber coating. 22. What is the voltage source? The voltage source is the device that creates a potential difference in electric circuit. Like a battery or a generator. 23. Suppose you have a number of light bulbs connected together in a series circuit. what happens if one of the bulbs burns out? Why does this happen? Draw a model. A burnt out bulb is a break in the circuit, so the rest of the bulbs will not light up because there is no other path for the current to take. 7

8 24. Why would you want the circuits in your home to be a series circuit? You wouldn't want a series circuit in your home because, if one electric device goes out, then all of your devices will go out as well. 25. SUppose you have a number of light bulbs connected on a circuit, with each bulb on a seperate branch. What happens if one bulb burns out? If there is a bulb burnt out, charges can still move through the other branches. The other bulbs will remain lit. 26. Imagine that you are building a string of lights using several bulbs. How is the brightness of the lights related to whether you connect the bulbs in a series or a parallel circuit? Why does this act this way? Draw a simple model. The string of lights would get dimmer in a series circuit because, the light bulbs are resistors. The more resistance, the less current is available to the following lights. The string of lights would remain the same, because the more paths you add to a parallel circuit the less the resistance. This is because there is more paths for the current to follow.
