arxiv:math/ v1 [math.mg] 20 May 1996 COVERING NUMBERS AND LOW M -ESTIMATE FOR QUASI-CONVEX BODIES A. E. LITVAK, V. D. MILMAN, AND A. PAJOR Abstract. This article gives estimates on covering numbers and diameters of random roortional sections and rojections of symmetric quasi-convex bodies in R n. These results were known for the convex case and layed an essential role in develoment of the theory. Because duality relations can not be alied in the quasiconvex setting, new ingredients were introduced that give new understanding for the convex case as well. 1. Introduction and notation Let be a euclidean norm on R n. Let D be an ellisoid associated with this norm. Denote A = k n k i=1 x2 i dσx), where σ is the normalized rotation S n 1 invariant measure on the euclidean shere S n 1. Then A = An,k) < 1 and A 1 as n,k. For any star-body K in R n define M K = S n 1 x dσx), where x is the gauge of K. Let M K be M K 0, where K0 is the olar of K. For any subsets K 1,K 2 of R n denote by NK 1,K 2 ) the smallest number N such that there are N oints y 1,...,y N in K 1 such that K 1 N y i +K 2 ). i=1 Recall that a body K is called quasi-convex if there is a constant c such that K +K ck, and given a 0,1] a body K is called -convex if for any λ,µ > 0 satisfying λ +µ = 1 and any oints x,y K the oint λx+µy belongs to K. Note that for the gauge = K associated with the the quasi-convex -convex) body K the following inequality holds for any x,y R n x+y Cmax{ x, y } x+y x + y ). In articular every -convex body K is also quasi-convex one and K +K 2 1/ K. A more delicate result is that for every quasi-convex body K K +K ck) there Litvak s and Milman s research was artially suorted by BSF. Research at MSRI is suorted in art by NSF grant DMS
2 A. E. LITVAK, V. D. MILMAN, AND A. PAJOR exists a q-convex body K 0 such that K K 0 2cK, where 2 1/q = 2c. This is Aoki- Rolewicz theorem [KPR], [R], see also [K],.47). In this note by a body we always mean a centrally-symmetric comact star-body, i.e. a body K satisfying tk K for any t [ 1,1], however not all results use symmetry. Lemma 2, some analog of Lemma 4 for -convex body K, and Theorem 3 hold in non-symmetric case also. Let us remind of the so-called low M -estimate result. Theorem 1. Let λ > 0 and n be large enough. Let K be a convex body in R n and be the gauge of K. Then there exists a subsace E of R n, ) such that dime = [λn] and for any x E the following inequality holds for some function fλ), 0 < λ < 1. x fλ) x MK Remark. Inequality of this tye was first roved in[m1] with very oor deendence on λ and then imroved in [M2] to fλ) = C1 λ). It was later shown [PT]), that one can take fλ) = C 1 λ for different roofs see [M3] and [G]). By duality this theorem is equivalent to the following theorem. Theorem 1 Let λ > 0 and n be large enough. For any convex body K in R n there exists an orthogonal rojection P of rank [λn] such that where c is an absolute constant. PD M K fλ) PK, In this note we will extend both theorems to quasi-convex bodies. Because duality arguments can not be alied to a non-convex body these two theorems become different statements. Also MK should be substituted by an aroriate quantity not involving duality. Note that by avoiding the use of convexity assumtion we in fact simlified roof also for a convex case. 2. Main results The following theorem is an extension of Theorem 1. Theorem 2. Let λ > 0 and n be large enough n > c/1 λ) 2 ). For any -convex body K in R n there exists an orthogonal rojection P of the rank [λn] such that where A = const ln2/). PD A M K 1 λ) 1+1/PK,
COVERING NUMBERS AND LOW M -ESTIMATE FOR QUASI-CONVEX BODIES 3 The roof of this theorem is based on the next three lemmas. The first one was roved by W.B.Johnson and J.Lindenstrauss in [JL]. The second one was roved in [PT] for convex bodies and is the dual form of Sudakov minoration theorem. Lemma 1. There is an absolute constant c such that if ε > c/k and N < e ε2k/c, then for any set of oints y 1,...,y N R n and any orthogonal rojection P of rank k µ {U O n j : A1 ε) k/n y j PUy j A1+ε) ) k/n y j } 1 π/2 e ε2 k/c Lemma 2. Let K be a body such that K K ak. Then ND,tK) 2e 2naM K/t) 2. M. Talagrand gave a direct simle roof of this lemma for a convex case [T]). Below, using his idea, we rove more general lemma for -convex bodies, so we do not rove Lemma 2 now. Lemma 3. Let B be a star-body, K be a -convex set, r 0,1), {x i } rb and B x i +K). Then B t r K, where t r = 1 1 r ) 1/. Proof: Obviously t r = max{ x K x B}. Since B x i + K), for any oint x in B there are oints x 0 in rb and y in K such that x = x 0 + y. Then by maximality of t r and -convexity of K we have t r r t r + 1. That roves the lemma. Remark. Somewhat similar argument was used by N. Kalton in dealing with - convex sets. Proof of Theorem 2: Any -convex body K satisfies K K ak with a = 2 1/. By Lemma 1 and Lemma 2, we obtain for c 2 1/ that if ) 2 MK c n ε2 k t c and ε > c/k, then there exist oints x 1,...,x N in D and an orthogonal rojection P of rank k such that PD k Px i +tpk) and Px i 1+ε) n x i. Let λ = k/n. Denote r = 1+ε) λ. Lemma 3 gives us cc M K PD tt r PK for t = ε and ε 2 > c λ λn, r < 1.
4 A. E. LITVAK, V. D. MILMAN, AND A. PAJOR Choose Then for n large enough we get ε = 1 λ 2 λ. PD A M K 1 λ) 1+1/PK, for A = const ln2/). This comletes the roof. Theorem 2 can be formulated in the global form. Theorem 2 Let K be a -convex body in R n. Then there is an orthogonal oerator U such that D A M K K +UK), where A = const ln2/). This theorem can be roved indeendently, but we show how it follows from Theorem 2. Proof of Theorem 2 : It follows from the roof of Theorem 2 that actually the measure of such rojections is large. So we can choose two orthogonal subsaces E 1,E 2 of R n such that dime 1 = [n/2], dime 2 = [n+1)/2] and P i D A M K P i K, where P i is the rojection on the sace E i i = 1,2). Denote I = id R n = P1 +P 2 and U = P 1 P 2. So P 1 = 1/2I + U) and P 2 = 1/2I U). Then U is an orthogonal oerator and for any x D we have x = P 1 x+p 2 x 1/2 A M K I +U)K +1/2 A M K I U)K = = A M K +K K 2 +A M UK UK K 2 = A M KK +UK). That roves Theorem 2. Let us comlement Lemma 2 by mentioning how covering number NK,tD) can be estimated. In convex case this estimate is given by Sudakov inequality, using quantity M. More recisely, if K is a convex body, then NK,tD) 2e cnm K /t)2. Of course, using duality for a non-convex setting leads to a weak result, and we suggest below a substitution for quantity M. For two quasi-convex bodies K, B define the following number MK,B) = 1 x B dx, K where K is volume of K, and x B is the gauge of B. Such numbers are considered in [MP1], [MP2] and [BMMP]. K
COVERING NUMBERS AND LOW M -ESTIMATE FOR QUASI-CONVEX BODIES 5 Lemma 4. Let K and B be star-bodies. Assume B +B ab. For > 0 denote by c = c K) the best ossible constant such that Then x+y K + x y K 2 c x K + y K) for any x,y R n. NK,tB) 2c n ecn/)amk,b)/t), where c is an absolute constant. Note, that in a case = 1 which corresond to the general convex case this lemma was announced in [MP2]. Proof: We follow the idea of M.Talagrand of estimating covering numbers in case K = D [T], see also [BLM] Proosition 4.2). Denote the gauge of K by and the gauge of B by. Define the measure µ by following dµ = 1 dx, where A chosen such that A e x dµ = 1. R n Let L = R n x dµ. Then µ{ x 2L} 1/2. Let x 1,x 2,... be a maximal set of oints in K such that x i x j t. So the sets x i + t B have mutually disjoint interiors. a Let y i = abx t i for some b. Then, by symmetry of B and convexity of the function e t, we have µ{y i +} = 1 e x+y i dx = 1 e x+y i +e x y i dx A 2A 1 A e 1 2 x+y i + x y i ) dx 1 A = 1 A e c y i e c x + y i ) dx = e c x dx e c ba/t) c n µ{c } Choose b = 2L/c. Then µ{c } 1/2 and, hence, NK,tB) 2c n e 2aL/t). Now comute L. First, the normalization constant A is equal x A = e dx = e t ) dtdx = t 1 e t R n R n x 0 = dx t +n 1 e t dt = K Γ 1+ n ) x t, dxdt = x 1 0
6 A. E. LITVAK, V. D. MILMAN, AND A. PAJOR where Γ is the gamma-function. The remaining integral is x x e dx = x R n R n = x 1 x dx 0 x e t ) dtdx = 0 t 1 e t x t x dxdt = t +n e t dt = K MK,B) Γ 1+ n+1 ) Using Stirling s formula we get n ) 1/MK,B) L. That roves the lemma. This lemma is an extension of Lemma 2. Indeed, since Euclidean sace is a 2- smooth sace, then in case K = D being an ellisoid, we have c 2 D) = 1. By direct comutation, MD,B) = n n+1 M B. Thus, ND,tB) 2e cn)m B/t) 2. Define the following characteristic of K, M K = 1 K K x dx. By definition, if K is a -convex body, then for any x,y R n holds x+y K + x y K 2 x K + y K ). So, the last lemma shows that for -convex body K NK,tD) 2e cn/)2 M K /t). The Theorem 3 follows from this estimate by arguments similar of that in [MP]. Theorem 3. Let λ > 0 and n be large enough. Let K be a -convex body in R n and be the gauge of K. Then there exists subsace E of R n, ) such that dime = [λn] and for any x E the following inequality holds x 1 λ)1/2+1/ x, a MK where a deends on only more recisely a = const ln2/) )..
COVERING NUMBERS AND LOW M -ESTIMATE FOR QUASI-CONVEX BODIES 7 Proof: By Lemma 4 there are oints x 1,...,x N in K, such that N < e cn M K /t) and for any x K there exists some x i such that x x i < t. By Lemma 1 there exists an orthogonal rojection P on a subsace of dimension δn such that for ) MK c n < ε2 δn c and ε > t c δn we have b x i = 1 ε)a δ x i Px i 1+ε)A δ x i for every x i. Let E = KerP. Then dime = λn, where λ = 1 δ. Take x in K E. There is x i such that x x i < t. Hence x x x i + x i t+ Px i b t+ x x i b = t+ Px x i) b t1+ 1 b ) const t 1 ε) δ Therefore for n large enough and ) 1/ const c t = MK ε 2 δ we get x const ε2 1 ε)δ 1/2+1/ x. c 1/ MK To obtain our result take ε, say, equal to 1/2. As was noted in [MP2] in some cases MK << M and then Theorem 3 gives better estimate than Theorem 1 even for a convex body in some range of λ). As an examle, K = Bl1 n), MK const n 1/2, but MK const n 1/2 logn) 1/2. 3. Additional remarks In fact, during the roof of Theorem 2 a more general fact was roved. Fact. Let D be an ellisoid and K be a -convex body. Let ND,K) e αn. Denote for an integer 1 k n the ratio λ = k/n. Then for some absolute constant c and γ = c α, k γ 2 n,1 2γ) 2 n) there exists an orthogonal rojection P of rank k such that 1 λ)/2) 1/PD PK.
8 A. E. LITVAK, V. D. MILMAN, AND A. PAJOR In terms of entroy numbers this means 1 k/n)/2 e k D,K) ) 1/ PD PK, where e k D,K) = inf{ε > 0 ND,εK) 2 k 1 }. It is worth to oint out that Theorem 2 can be obtained from this results. We thank E. Gluskin for his remarks on the first draft of this note.
