The influence of the major planets, especially Jupiter and Saturn, increases the precession still further. The observed period is about 21,000 years. In the 4,000 years or so that have elapsed since the signs of the odiac were allotted their monthly periods of influence, the equinoxes have precessed about 1/6 of the way around the Earth's orbit, meaning the signs are off by at least 2 months. 4.
