1 ALGEBRA HONORS SUMMER WORK June 0 Dear Algebra Students, Attached you will find the Summer Math Packet for Algebra. The purpose of this packet is to review and sharpen your Algebra skills so that when we return to school in August you will be ready to go. Algebra is a challenging course which will stretch you in new ways and allow you to delve deeper into the study of advanced mathematics. With this in mind, please take the time to do your best work on this packet. In order to receive full credit on this packet you must show all necessary work. You will be tested on the material in this packet within the first week of the start of school. Please also remember that it is essential that you have a TI-8 Plus or TI-8 Silver Edition calculator. We will learn how to use this calculator to a greater etent than you have in the past and eplore its many functions and uses. If you are unable to purchase one, please come see me at the start of the school year. Check craigslist for deals!!! Have a great summer! I look forward to working with you this fall.

Answer: 9 Check by using FOIL: 9 8 =
10 XI. Operations with Linear Systems For #0-08, solve the system of equations by any method. I have provided eamples of each method substitution and elimination to refresh your memory on this skill. Sample : Solve: y 9y I ll use substitution. Replace with y in the second equation: ( y) + 9y = - 6y + 9y = - + y = - - -_ y = -6 y = - Then, replacing y with - in the top equation, we get = (-) = + 6 = 7 Sample : Solve: 5 y 0 y 6 I ll use elimination. Multiply the bottom equation by so that the y s will cancel when the equations are added together. (Note: you could have multiplied the bottom equation through by -5 to eliminate instead.) 5 y = 0 ( + y = 6) 5 y = y = 7 = 7 7_ = 6 Then, replacing with 6 in the top equation (either works), we get 5(6) y = 0 0 y = y = 0 - -_ y = 0 Solve each system using either method: substitution or elimination. SHOW ALL WORK. 0. y 6 y 0. y 5 5y 0. y y 5 0. y 5y 05. y 0 y y 5 y 07. 8y 5y 08. y 80 y For each of the problems in #0-08, prove to me that your answers are correct by substituting each into the original equations and verifying that both equations are satisfied.
11 XII. Proportions. Solve each for. (hint: set the cross-products equal) SHOW ALL WORK For each of the problems in #0-, prove to me that your answers are correct by substituting each into the original equation and verifying that it makes a true statement. XIII. Quadratic Equations. Eample: Solve 5 0 Answer: Factor to get Solve each for by using factoring. SHOW ALL WORK Then, + 9 = 0 or 5 = 0 So = -9 or = For each of the problems in #5-, prove to me that your answers are correct by substituting each into the original equation and verifying that it makes a true statement. XIV. Number Sense, Open Response, Applications.. A sweater that originally costs $50 is marked 0% off. In addition, you have a coupon that entitles you to take 0% off of the sales price. Assuming that clothing purchases are ta eempt, a. determine the sale price of the sweater; b. determine the price that you will wind up paying with your coupon; c. what fraction of the original price do you wind up paying? 5. a. Provide a simplified epression, in terms of c and d, that represents the perimeter of the figure. b. Using c = 0 and d = 8, determine the area of the figure. Assume that all angles are right angles. c. If the values of c and d are both doubled, determine the effect that would have on the i. perimeter ii. area
