2 What s in the bag? One person, WITHOUT LOOKING see if you can describe what s inside.
3 What sticks and why? Does all metal stick to a magnet? What does? What doesn t?
4 Polarity Magnets have poles. There is a north pole and a south pole (kinda like the earth!) In this case a magnet has two sides. The north only attracts the south, and the south only attracts the north.two south sides or two north sides repel each other!
5 We know force now what about motion? If force is the push or pull on an object can you make an object, maybe a magnet, move using another magnet? What would that look like?
6 Breaking the Force - Ask If you put a plastic spacer in between the magnets, would they still stick to each other? (remember what you learned about a force field.)
7 Breaking the Force - Imagine How can the strength of the force between two objects be measured? From earlier observation, we thought that the force of attraction didn t work if the magnets were too far apart. How could we be sure that observation is correct?

10 Breaking the Force - Plan If they do stick, you think the space between them would affect the strength of the force? Time to find out! Let s set up a graph to record data as you measure force.
11 Breaking the Force - Create Time to test it out! Measure the force (in how many tiles it takes to break the force field) with no spacers, 1 spacer, 2 spacers,

13 Breaking the Force - Improve What did you find out? What could you change next time to get better results?
14 A Sticky Situation 1. Stuck-Up Balloon Blow up a balloon and tie the end so that the balloon stays inflated. Hold the balloon against the wall and see if it will stick. What happens? Briskly rub the balloon across a piece of fur or wool or (Mr. Lurie will put up a cloth). For wool, you can use a sweater, sock, scarf, or rug. Does the balloon stay? Can you explain what happened?
15 A Sticky Situation 2. Dancing Paper Tear a sheet of paper into small pieces about the size of the fingernail on your pinky. Place the pieces of paper on the table. Charge a balloon as in part 1. Bring the charged balloon near the pieces of paper. What happens?
