2 Objectives We have defined and studied the important vector spaces associated with matrices (row space, column space, and null space). We will focus today on the relationships between the dimensions of these vector spaces.

3 Equal Dimensions for Row and Column Spaces Consider the matrix A and its reduced row echelon form R A = R = We can see from R that the column space and row space of A are both three-dimensional.

4 General Result Theorem The row space and column space of a matrix A have the same dimension.

If R is the row echelon form of A then dim(row space of A) = dim(row space of R) dim(column space of A) = dim(column space of R).

If R is the row echelon form of A then dim(row space of A) = dim(row space of R) dim(column space of A) = dim(column space of R). Dimension of row space of R is the number of nonzero rows which equals the number of leading 1 s which is the dimension of the column space.

8 Rank and Nullity Definition The dimension of the row and column space of A is called the rank of A, denoted rank(a). The dimension of the null space of A is called the nullity of A, denoted nullity(a).

13 Maximum Value for Rank Question: if A is an m n matrix, what is the maximum possible rank(a)?

14 Maximum Value for Rank Question: if A is an m n matrix, what is the maximum possible rank(a)? Answer: rows of A lie in R n and the columns of A lie in R m. Maximum dimension of the row space is n and the maximum dimension of the column space is m, thus rank(a) min(m, n).

15 Dimension Theorem for Matrices Theorem If A is a matrix with n columns, then rank(a) + nullity(a) = n.

16 Proof Since A has n columns, the linear system A x = 0 has n unknowns. # of leading variables + # of free variables = n

17 Proof Since A has n columns, the linear system A x = 0 has n unknowns. # of leading variables + # of free variables = n The number of leading variables is the same as the number of leading 1 s in the reduced row echelon form of A. This is the rank(a).

18 Proof Since A has n columns, the linear system A x = 0 has n unknowns. # of leading variables + # of free variables = n The number of leading variables is the same as the number of leading 1 s in the reduced row echelon form of A. This is the rank(a). The number of free variables is the number of parameters in the solution to A x = 0. This is the nullity(a).

21 Parameters for a Nonhomogeneous System Theorem If A x = b is a consistent linear system of m equations and n unknowns, and if rank(a) = r, then the general solution of A x = b contains n r parameters.

Example If A is a 7 9 matrix of rank 6, then how many free variables are in the general solution of A x = b?

23 Fundamental Matrix Spaces Suppose A is an m n matrix, then we can discuss the following vector spaces: row space of A column space of A null space of A column space of A T row space of A T null space of A T

25 Four Fundamental Spaces There are four fundamental matrix spaces: row space of A ( R n ) column space of A ( R m ) null space of A ( R n ) null space of A T ( R m )

26 Results Theorem If A is a matrix, then rank(a) = rank(a T ).

31 Equivalent Statements (1 of 2) Theorem If A is an n n matrix, then the following are equivalent. 1. A is invertible. 2. Ax = 0 has only the trivial solution. 3. The reduced row echelon form of A is I n. 4. A is expressible as the product of elementary matrices. 5. Ax = b is consistent for every n 1 matrix b. 6. Ax = b has exactly one solution for every n 1 matrix b. 7. det(a) 0.

32 Equivalent Statements (2 of 2) Theorem If A is an n n matrix, then in addition to statements (1) (7) the following are equivalent. 8. The column vectors of A are linearly independent. 9. The row vectors of A are linearly independent. 10. The column vectors of A span R n. 11. The row vectors of A span R n. 12. The column vectors of A form a basis for R n. 13. The row vectors of A form a basis for R n. 14. A has rank n. 15. A has nullity 0.

Answer: there is some vector b R 7 for which the system is consistent. For any such b the number of parameters in the general solution is n rank(a) = 5 4 = 1.

Answer: the system may be consistent or inconsistent. If it is consistent for vector b R 5, then the general solution has a number of parameters equal to n rank(a) = 7 4 = 3.
