The degree of a term and a polynomial Every day, people use algebra to find unknown quantities. For example, you may be interested in figuring out how long it would take you to drive across the country. Or, you may want to know why your checkbook doesn't balance. To find these unknown quantities, you need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials. That s what you will learn in this lesson. d. 3 EXPLAIN ADDING AND SUBTRACTING Summary Identifying Polynomials A polynomial is a special kind of algebraic expression which may have one or more variables and one or more terms. For a polynomial in one variable, x, each term has the form ax r, where the coefficient, a, is any real number, and the exponent, r, is a nonnegative integer. For example: x 3 + 7x 4x + a = 1 a = 7 a = 4 a = r = 3 r = r = 1 r = 0 Remember, when x 0: x 0 = 1 x 1 = x For a polynomial in two variables, x and y, each term has the form ax r y s, where a is any real number, and r and s are nonnegative integers. For example: 8x 3 y 4 + 3xy 4 a = 8 a = 3 a = 4 r = 3 r = 1 r = 0 s = 4 s = s = 0 Polynomials with one, two, or three terms have special names: A monomial has one term: t 5 u 3 v 1 4 A binomial has two terms: 4mpd + m 3 d A trinomial has three terms: 87k 13k + 13 k 3 An algebraic expression is not a polynomial if any of its terms cannot be written in the form ax r. 4 The Degree of a Polynomial The degree of a term of a polynomial is the sum of the exponents of the variables in that term. The degree of a polynomial is the degree of the term with the highest degree. For example, to find the degree of the polynomial 8x 3 y 4 + 3xy 3; find the degree of each term: 8x 3 y 4 + 3xy 3 = 8x 3 y 4 + 3x 1 y 3x 0 y The degree of the polynomial 8x 3 y 4 + 3xy 3 is the degree of the term with the highest degree, 7. Evaluating Polynomials Sometimes the variables in a polynomial are assigned specific numerical values. In these cases you can evaluate the polynomial by replacing the variables with the numbers. To evaluate a polynomial: 1. Replace each variable with its assigned value.. Calculate the value of the polynomial. For example, to evaluate the polynomial 6b 4bc + c when b = and c = 3: = 6b 4bc + c 1. Replace b with and c with 3. = 6() 4()(3) + (3). 5 Adding Polynomials To add polynomials, combine like terms - terms that have the same variables with the same exponents. Here is an example of two like terms: Here is an example of two terms that are not like terms: 3x y and x y 3x y and 3xy To add polynomials: 1. Remove the parentheses.. Write like terms next to each other. 3. Combine like terms. For example, to find: =(3z 3 + zy 6y 3 ) + (15z 5zy + 4z ) 1. Remove the parentheses. =(3z 3 + zy 6y z 5zy + 4z. Write like terms next to each other. =(3z 3 + zy 5zy 6y z + 4z 3. Combine like terms. =(3z 3 3zy 6y z Subtracting Polynomials To subtract one polynomial from another, add the opposite of the polynomial being subtracted. To subtract polynomials: 1. Multiply the polynomial being subtracted by 1.. Distribute the Simplify. To find the opposite of a polynomial, multiply each term by 1. When you add the opposite, the result is the same as changing the sign of each term in the polynomial being subtracted. 4. Write like terms next to each other. 5. Combine like terms. For example, to find: (6y 3 3z 3 + zy ) (15z 5zy + 4y 3 ) 1. Multiply the second polynomial by 1. = (6y 3 3z 3 + zy ) + ( 1)(15z 5zy + 4y 3 ). Distribute the 1. = (6y 3 3z 3 + zy ) + ( 1)15z ( 1)5zy + ( 1)4y 3 3. Simplify. = 6y 3 3z 3 + zy 15z + 5zy 4y 3 4. Write like terms next to each other. = 6y 3 4y 3 3z 3 + zy + 5zy 15z 5. 7 MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING Summary Multiplying Monomials Monomials are easy to multiply because they each have only one term. To multiply monomials: 1. Rearrange the factors so that the constants are next to each other and the factors with the same base are next to each other.. Multiply. For example, to find: 3p 3 q 6 r s p 4 q 4 s 5 1. Rearrange the factors. = 3 p 3 p 4 q 6 q 4 r s s 5. Multiply. = 6 p q r s = 6 p 7 q 10 r s 6 = 6p 7 q 10 r s 6 Multiplying a Monomial by a Polynomial with More Than One Term When multiplying a monomial by a polynomial with more than one term, you need to multiply every term in the polynomial by the monomial. To multiply a monomial by a polynomial with more than one term: 1. Distribute the monomial to each term in the other polynomial.. Simplify. In general, to multiply a monomial by a polynomial with more than one term: a(b + c + d) = a b + a c + a d For example, to find: 5x 4 (3x y + xy x y ) 1. Distribute the = 5x 4 (3x y ) + 5x 4 (xy ) 5x 4 (x y ) monomial. = 5 3 x 4 x y + 5 x 4 x y 5 x 4 x y. Simplify. = 15 x 4+ y + 10 x y 5 x 4 + y = 15x 6 y + 10x 5 y 5x 6 y LESSON 6.
