1 Target College Students By Kristan Hawkins Executive Director, Students for Life America Ashleigh Weaver Researcher Abstract In the Fall 2011, Life Dynamics released a study entitled, Racial Targeting and Population Control, by Mark Crutcher. The study helped to prove, through unmistakable evidence, that, as the largest provider abortion services in America, and other independent abortion facilities in America target both black and Hispanic communities. The survey examined approximately 3,000 zip code tabulation areas across the United States that includes at least one abortion facility or abortion referring facility. After researching the proportion minorities within these tabulation areas, research showed that approximately 2,500 zip code tabulation areas out the total 3,000 proved to being in areas that display a larger (exceeds 125 percent) Hispanic or black population than the state s overall minority population. After reviewing the research and evidence within the Life Dynamics study, Racial Targeting and Population Control SFLA questioned where these remaining 500 zip codes are at. SFLA suspected that these gaps were inhabited by college- aged students and proceeded to expand the original research done by Life Dynamics to examine this theory. After re- examining these 499 zip code tabulation areas that include an abortion or abortion referring area that are not in disproportionate minority areas. we proved that they were in fact inhabited by students from nearby two and four- year institutions. We have encountered unmistakable evidence that helps prove targets this demographic. The Pro Life movement has known for years that has targeted the college aged women for business. The Guttmacher Institute, an affiliate research arm, reported that 46 percent abortions are performed on college- aged women. It is also clear that through carefully crafted vernacular and by establishing VOX groups the campus outreach branch college- aged women are being targeted by when touting their abortion and abortion referral services. This study has given the pro- life movement unmistakable evidence that does target college aged women. Methodology SFLA began researching whether or not was targeting college- aged women by overlaying our research onto the original Life Dynamics study. We will first explain their methodology since our study originates from their research. Life Dynamics initially created a database containing zip codes affiliated with every (abortion and/or abortion referring) and independent abortion facilities in the United States. They then used the 2000 United States Census Bureau figures to establish the percentage Black and Hispanic residents within each these zip code tabulation areas. Life Dynamics then used the resulting data to calculate if these zip code tabulation areas contain a
2 higher proportion blacks and/or Hispanics than the state in which these minority communities are located (exceeding 125 percent). SFLA then took all the zip code tabulation areas compiled from Life Dynamics study that contained a or independent abortion facility that was not located in a disproportionately black or Hispanic community and found that 499 these original 3,000 zip codes that fit this description. With these 499 zip codes, SFLA examined whether or not there were two or four year colleges within 5 miles each zip codes. In order to search for colleges within 5 miles these zip codes, we utilized information found through the National Center for Education Statistics (nces.ed.gov). SFLA decided to set a controlled radius 5 miles from each zip code due to the fact that some universities and colleges occupy an entire zip code. The National Center for Education Statistics pulls all educational centers that provide education above the high school level. For our study, SFLA only used those schools that award Associates, Bachelor s and Master s degrees. This criteria fers the assumption that most students in these schools are in the typical college age range (18-25) Once SFLA found our results within the zip code tabulation areas where abortion or abortion- referring facilities are located, we took 100 randomly selected zip codes from the full list US Postal s available at and utilized a random number generator to select from this list. After SFLA had a group 100 randomly selected zip codes, we then examined whether there were two or four year colleges or universities within 5 miles each zip code using the National Center for Educational Statistics. Accuracy As stated in Life Dynamics original study, Racial Targeting and Population Control, errors can occur due to: a change in zip codes, the closure an abortion facility, the opening a new facility, a change in an abortion facility, and/or a facility that operates under numerous names and addresses. Life Dynamics also pointed out that, in the highly unstable world abortion clinics and population control facilities, these problems are even more pronounced. Once our data was gathered, we arduously checked our research for accuracy and errors. Since our initial data came from Life Dynamics study, which included every facility in the country and did not use a representative sample, it would take many errors to significantly alter the results. The Charts The first set charts identifies the zip code tabulation areas affiliated with and abortion and abortion- referring facilities. The second chart identifies the zip codes independent abortion facilities. As Life Dynamics stated in their initial study, it is not the case that every performs abortions. However, they do all refer patients to facilities that to perform abortions, schedule abortions or provide contraceptive drugs including abortificants. All independent abortion facilities that were included in this study do provide abortions at their facilities. These independent abortion facilities are usually affiliated with either the National Federation or the National Coalition Providers. The third set charts identifies the average United States zip
3 code by obtaining a list 100 randomly selected zip codes by using a random number generator that pulled from the complete list USPS zip codes available. Analysis and Conclusion The numbers we found provide undeniable evidence that population control facilities such as target college- aged women. In the 499 zip codes that SFLA examined, 375 (75.1%) these zip codes have colleges/universities within 5 miles each zip code. 217 (43%) these zip codes are located in the same zip code where an abortion or abortion referring facility is located. Of the 499 zip codes that SFLA examined, there are 349 zip codes that is located in. Out those 349 zip codes, 43% (149) those have a college/university within the zip code, and 72% (273) those 349 zip codes are within 5 miles a college or university. Out the estimated 780 number affiliates across America, 78.8% (615) are located within 5 miles a college or university. And this does not even include any zip codes that contain a fice that in located in a high racial demographic zone, as we only studied the zip codes that were not in this classification. When you compare the 499 zip codes SFLA studied to our third chart, the sample 100 zip codes that are representative the United States, it is clear that abortion and abortion- referring facilities target college- aged women. In the list 100 randomly generated U.S. zip codes, SFLA found that only 3 these zip codes contain a college or university within it, this compares to the 43% the 499 zip codes that were examined in this study. The list the 100 random zip codes also shows that there is a 25% chance a college or university will be within 5 miles an average U.S. zip code, this compares to 75% zip codes where abortion or abortion referring facilities are located. The fact is that a college or university is at least 3 times more likely to be within 5 miles a zip code that contains an abortion or abortion- referring facility then an average US zip code and a college or university is 14 times more likely to be within a zip code that contains an abortion or abortion referring facility than an average US zip code. Total Within a College or University W/in 5 miles Zip College or University PP in US (46%) 615 (79 %) Randomly Selected Zip (3%) 25 (25 %) s s not in a high racial demographic zone (used from LD study) (43 %) 273 (72 %) Why does the fact that population control centers target college aged students matter? Life Dynamics gives the example that blacks suffer disproportionate health problems associated with both tobacco and alcohol use. Legislators and black leaders have showed that this is due to the targeting by tobacco
4 companies and liquor merchandisers. These companies market to blacks by placing billboards and liquor stores in black communities as well as advertising appeals specifically to the black community. The same thing has been evidenced when tobacco companies target teens, when this occurs, teen smoking increases. This same philosophy can be applied to population control facilities that target specific demographics. By targeting college- aged women, they increase the abortion rates college aged woman, as evidenced by the Guttmacher study that proved that 46 percent abortions occur in college aged women.
