1 LECTURES ON DEFORMATIONS OF GALOIS REPRESENTATIONS Mark Kisin Lecture 5: Flat deformations (5.1) Flat deformations: Let K/Q p be a finite extension with residue field k. Let W = W (k) and K 0 = FrW. We consider a finite dimensional F-vector space equipped with a continuous action of G K. Fix an algebraic closure K of K, and let G K = Gal( K/K). Recall that a representation of G K on a finite abelian p-group is called flat if it arises from a finite flat group scheme over O K. The following result is due to Ramakrishna [Ra]: Proposition (5.1.1). Let A AR W and V A in D VF (A). There exists a quotient A fl of A such that for any morphism A A in AR W, V A =: V A A A is flat if and only if A A factors through A fl. Proof. First note that if V is a finite abelian p-group equipped with a continuous action of G K and V is flat, then any G K -stable subgroup V V is flat. Indeed, suppose V = G(O K) think of V, V as finite étale group schemes over K. If G is the closure of V in G, then V = G (O K). This remark shows that if θ : A A is a morphism in AR W then V A is flat if and only if V θ(a) is flat. Similarly, if I, J A are ideals and V A/I and V A/J is flat then V A/I J V A/I V A/J is flat. Corollary (5.1.2). Let D fl V F D VF denote the sub-functor corresponding to flat deformations. Then D fl V F D VF is relatively representable. Proof. In the language of groupoids this just means that if ξ in D VF, then (DV fl F ) ξ is representable, and this follows from (5.1.1). (5.2) Weakly admissible modules and Smoothness of the generic fibre: Proposition (5.2.1). Suppose that D VF is pro-represented by R VF and let RV fl F be the quotient of R VF which pro-represents DV fl F. Let E/W (F)[1/p] be a finite extension and x : RV fl F [1/p] E be a point such that ker x has residue field E. Write R x fl (resp. R x ) for the completion of RV fl F [1/p] (resp. R VF [1/p]) at x. For any Artinian quotient ɛ : R x B denote the specialization of the universal deformation by R VF B. Then ɛ factors through R fl V F if and only if V B factors through R fl x if and only if V B arises from a p-divisible group. 2 2 MARK KISIN Proof. Let B be in AR E and denote by Int B the set of finite O E -subalgebras A B. Then R VF B factors through some A in Int B. Denote by V A the induced G K representation. Then V B arises from a p-divisible group if and only if V A does. By a result of Raynaud [Ray, 2.3.1], V A arises from a p-divisible group if and only if V A /p n V A is flat for n 1. This is equivalent to asking that V A A A/m n A be flat for n 1, or that V A A A/m n A is in Dfl (A/m n A ). For the final statement we use Breuil s result that a crystalline representation with all Hodge-Tate weights equal to 0, 1 arises from a p-divisible group [Br, Thm ], [Ki 4, 2.2.6]. (5.2.2) The deformation theoretic description of R fl x allows us to show that this ring is always formally smooth over E, and hence that R fl V F [1/p] is formally smooth over W (F)[1/p]. To prove this we need a little preparation (see [Ki 3]). For any weakly admissible filtered ϕ-module D over K, denote by C (D) the complex C (D) the complex concentrated in degrees 0, 1. D (1 ϕ,id) D D K /Fil 0 D K Lemma (5.2.3). There is a canonical isomorphism Ext 1 w.adm(1, D) H 1 (C (D)). where 1 = K 0 denotes the unit object in the category of weakly admissible module. Proof. We associate the class ((1 ϕ) d, d) H 1 (C (D)) to the given extension. If (d 0, d 1 ) D D K /Fil 0 D K we construct an extension of 1 by D by setting D = D 1 on underlying K 0 -vector spaces and defining ϕ on D by ϕ(1) = 1 + d 0 and the filtration by Fil i DK = Fil i D K + K d 1 i 0 and Fil i DK = Fil i D K if i > 0. One checks that these two constructions induce the required isomorphism and its inverse. (5.2.4) Let E/Q p be a finite extension, and D E a weakly admissible filtered ϕ- module over K, equipped with an action of E. For B in AR E we denote by D DE (B) the category of weakly admissible filtered filtered ϕ-modules D B, equipped with an action of B, and an isomorphism D B B E D, such that D and gr D K are free B-modules. For V E a crystalline representation on a finite dimensional E-vector space, and B in AR E we denote by D cris (V B ) the category of crystalline deformations of V E to B.

Moreover each of these groupoids is formally smooth. Proof. The proof of the first statement is formally similar to (5.3.5) below, and left as an exercise to the reader. The formal smoothness can be proved by a deformation theoretic argument using (5.2.3) and the fact that H 2 (C (add E )) = 0. Proposition (5.2.6). In the notation of (5.2.1), let D E = D cris (V E ). The E- algebra R fl x is formally smooth of dimension dim E H 1 (C (add x )) = 1 + dim E D K /Fil 0 D K. Proof. By (5.2.1) R x fl pro-represents D VE, which is equivalent to D DE formally smooth by (5.2.5). The dimension of R x fl is equal to and hence dim E Ext 1 cris(v E, V E ) = dim E Ext 1 w.adm(d E, D E ) = dim E Ext 1 w.adm(1, add x ) = dim E H 1 (C (add)) = 1 + dim E D K /Fil 0 D K. Here the first term means crystalline self extensions of V E, as a representation of E[G K ], the second last equality follows from (5.2.3), and the final one from the fact that the Euler characteristic of a finite complex is equal to that of its cohomology. (5.3) The Fontaine-Laffaille functor and Smoothness when e = 1: Recall the Fontaine-Laffaille category MF 1 tor whose objects consist of a finite, torsion W - module M, together with a submodule M 1 M, and Frobenius semi-linear maps such that (1) ϕ M 1 = pϕ 1. (2) ϕ(m) + ϕ 1 (M 1 ) = M. ϕ : M M and ϕ 1 : M 1 M MF 1 tor is an abelian subcategory of the category of filtered W -modules of finite length [FL, ]. In particular, any morphism on MF 1 tor is strict for filtrations. Note also that if p M = 0, then ϕ(m 1 ) = 0, and so comparing the lengths of the two sides of (2) above shows that ϕ 1 is injective and ϕ(m) ϕ 1 (M 1 ) M. Theorem (5.3.1). (Fontaine-Laffaille, Raynaud) Suppose that K = K 0 and p > 2. Then there exist equivalences of abelian categories MF 1 tor {f.flat group schemes/w } {flat repns. of G K }. FL Proof. The first equivalence is obtained by composing the anti-equivalence [FL, 9,11] with Cartier duality. The second follows from Raynaud s result [Ray, 3.3.6] that when e(k/k 0 ) < p 1 the functor G G(O K) is fully faithful and the category of finite flat group schemes over O K is abelian.

4 4 MARK KISIN (5.3.2) We will need a little more information about the functor FL. For a finite flat group scheme G over W we denote by t G the tangent space of G W k, and by G the Cartier dual of G. The contravariant version of the functor is constructed via the theory of Honda systems, which is an extension of Dieudonné theory (which classifies finite flat group schemes over k) [FL, 9.7]. In particular, if G killed by p, and M = FL(G), there is an exact sequence 0 (t G σ 1 M t G 0 where σ denote the Frobenius on W. Moreover the linear map 1 ϕ 1 : M 1 σ 1 M identifies M 1 with with t G. In particular dim k M 1 = dim k ϕ 1 (M 1 ) = dim k t G. Now suppose that G is a p-divisible group, T p G its Tate module, and G its Cartier dual. Write V p G = T p G Zp Q p. Then D(G) := D cris (T p G)(1) Hom GK (T p G, B cris ) is a weakly admissible module whose associated graded is zero except in degrees 0, 1. The lattice T p G V p G corresponds to a strongly divisible lattice M D cris (T p G) with M/pM canonically isomorphic to FL(G[p]) as an object of MF 1 tor. In particular (5.3.3) dim K0 Fil 1 D(G) = rk OK0 Fil 1 M = dim k M 1 = dim k t G [p]. Theorem (5.3.4). Suppose K = K 0 and p > 2. Then D fl V F is formally smooth. If G F denote the unique finite flat model of V F, G F denotes its Cartier dual, and t G F denotes the tangent space of G F, then dim F D fl V F (F[ɛ]) = 1 + dim F t GF dim F t G F. Proof. Let M F in MF 1 tor denote the object corresponding to V F. Then M F is naturally an F-vector space by the full faithfulness of (5.2.1). Let D MF denote the groupoid over AR W (F) such that D MF (A) is the category of objects M A in MF 1 tor equipped with an action of A, such that such that M A is a finite free A-module and M 1 is an A-module direct summand, and an isomorphism M A A F M F in MF 1 tor. Lemma (5.3.5). The Fontaine-Laffaille functor of (5.2.1) induces an equivalence of categories FL : D MF D fl VF. Proof. If M A is in D MF (A) let V A be its image under FL. As FL is exact V A is finite free over A. Indeed, for any finite A-module N we have (5.3.4) FL(M A ) A N FL(M A A N). This is obvious if N is free over A, and the general case follows by choosing a presentation of N by free modules. As the right hand side is an exact functor in N,

Applying (5.3.4) with N = F, one also sees that V A is naturally a deformation of V F. Conversely if V A is in DV fl F, and M A MF 1 tor satisfies FL(M A ) V A, then M A is an A-module by the full faithfulness of FL, and since MF 1 tor is abelian, the same argument as above shows that M A is free over A, and that MA 1 M A is an A-module direct summand (5.3.6) We return to the proof of (5.3.4). By the lemma to prove the formal smoothness of DV fl F it suffices to prove the formal smoothness of D MF. Let A be in AR W (F), I A an ideal and M A/I in D MF (A/I). We have to show that M A/I lifts to an object of D MF (A). First choose a lifting of the A/I-module M A/I to an A-module M A, and a submodule MA 1 M A which is a direct summand and lifts MA/I 1. Next let L A/I = ϕ 1 (MA/I 1 ), and choose a lift of L A/I to a direct summand L A M A and a lift of the composite ϕ (M A ) ϕ (M A/I ) 1 ϕ1 M A/I to L A. Finally one checks that the map 1 pϕ 1 : ϕ (MA 1 ) M A admits an extension to a map ϕ (M A ) M A which induces the given map ϕ (M A/I ) M A/I. (5.3.7) It remains to check that the dimension of DV fl F has the claimed dimension. We could do this directly by computing the dimension of D MF (F[ɛ]), however it is simpler to use our computation of the dimension of the generic fibre of RV fl F. Let x : RV fl F [1/p] E be a surjective map, where E is a finite extension of Q p. Write V x for the corresponding crystalline representation. Since we already know that RV fl F is smooth, we need to compute the dimension of the tangent space of R fl V F [1/p] at x. Let D x = D cris (V x ). Using (5.2.6) and (5.3.3)one sees that this dimension is dim E (D x /Fil 1 D x )dim E Fil 1 D x = 1 + dim F t G dim F t G. Exercises: Exercise 1: Formulate and prove Proposition (5.2.1) for framed deformations. Exercise 2: Check that the two constructions used to define the isomorphism Ext 1 w.adm(1, D) H 1 (C (D)) in (5.2.3) are well defined and inverse. Exercise 3: Give an explicit description of the isomorphism Ext 1 w.adm(1, add) Ext 1 w.adm(d, D) used in (5.2.6). Exercise 4: Show that the functor D DE in (5.2.5) is formally smooth. Exercise 5: Show that the category MF 1 tor is equivalent to the category of finite Honda systems defined in Conrad s lectures. This is slightly tricky [FL, 9.4]. 1 The computation becomes slightly easier if E = W (F)[1/p], which we may assume as R fl V F is formally smooth.
