CEE 10 Open Channel Flow, Dec. 1, Review Flow through a contraction Critical and choked flows The hydraulic jump conservation of linear momentum y = 1 + y Fr Rapidly Varied Flows Weirs Broad-Crested Weir Consider the following flow: This is known as the broad-crested weir which is characterized by: Sufficiently short that energy loss due to channel friction is negligible h L = 0 Bernoulli s equation. Sufficiently long horizontal section that hydrostatic flow is a reasonable approximation pressure over horizontal section is hydrostatic. Therefore our starting point is the Bernoulli equation E 1 = E + h w V 1 g + H + h w = V g + h w + y

184 Aha! Since the flow upstream is subcritical and there is a region where dy dx 1 just upstream of the weir the flow over the horizontal section must be a control and hence y = y c and V = V c = gy c. Therefore we have Solving for y c we have V 1 g + H = y c + y c = y c y c = V 1 g + H H if V 1 g H Therefore a reasonable approximation of the flow rate over a weir is Q = by c V c = by c gyc = b gy / = b ( ) / gy / = b gh Now the reality is while the above is reasonable, there are energy losses and often broadcrested weirs are used as flow discharge measurement devices. Hence experimental calibration is often preferred and a weir discharge coefficient C d is experimentally determined. I.e., Q = C d b gh The literature is full of different formulations such as equations and in your textbook which yields a maximal C d of about Sharp-Crested Weir Now our picture looks like: This is known as the sharp-crested weir. We can get a first-order solution by assuming

CEE 10 Open Channel Flow, Dec. 1, that the velocity field upstream of the weir is uniform and that the fluid flows horizontally over the weir and that the flow in the overflow section (known as the nappe) is a free jet an hence the pressure is atmospheric. Now our picture is: Assuming that the energy losses are minimal and following our pictured streamline we have from the Bernoulli equation P 1 γ + V 1 g + z 1 = u g + (h w + y h) where u is the velocity at the streamline elevation over the weir and h is the distance from the free surface to the elevation of our streamline. Now, since energy is conserved we know P 1 γ + V 1 g + z 1 = V g + (h w + y ) and we can write: u = [ g (h + V )] 1 1 g Assuming a rectangular weir of width b we can find the flow rate by integrating: Q = y gb 0 (h + V 1 )1 dh g Now, if h w y (which is often the case) the upstream energy is negligible and we can ignore the V 1 term which simplifies the result of our integral too: Q = gby

186 very similar to our broad-crested weir result! Analogously we can write a weir coefficient to handle energy losses and geometry effects The book actually uses y ( H) and gets Q = C wr gby Q = C d b gh Identical to the broad-crested weir except that the coefficient must differ. They give the coefficient in equation An Example Problem

CEE 10 Open Channel Flow, Dec. 1, Gradually Varied Flow dy dx 1 Unlike the previous example of a sill where we had dy dx 1 over a short enough reach that it was reasonable to assume h L = 0 and hence use the Bernoulli form of the energy equation, for general gradually varied flow (GVF) the reaches are longer and we must include h L that arrises from frictional effects at the boundaries (e.g., include terms with Manning s n). Therefore the general analysis of GVF combines the continuity equation with the energy equation. This leads to a first-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) for dy dx which is readily solved numerically. An example of a standard software package to analyze GVF is the Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS (Hydraulic Engineering Center - River Analysis System). The analysis of these flows is beyond the scope of CEE 10 but for those interested it is covered in CEE 0 (spring 11?). 8.0 Uniform Flow in a Partially Full Pipe The geometry gives us: From Manning we have: A = R ( θ ) sin θ ; P = Rθ Therefore R h = R V = α n [ R Plotting V and Q as a function of θ: ( 1 ( 1 ) sin θ θ )] / sin θ S 1/ 0 θ

V/(α n 1 R / S 0 / Q/(α n 1 R 8/ S 0 / V Q θ (degrees) V max = α n R/ h S1/ 0 at θ = 18.7, y = 0.81D Q max =.19 α n R8/ h S1/ 0 at θ = 151., y = 0.98D 8.1 Efficient Uniform Flow Channels We seek the lowest flow resistance we wish to minimize P for a given A. therefore wish to minimize R h = A/P. Therefore The global most efficient shape is a half-full circular cross-section (the semi-circular channel). How about for a trapezoidal channel? Consider: A = (y + y cotθ) b; P = b + y(1 + cot θ) 1/ Now we can solve for b Therefore P = b = A y(1 + cot θ) A y(1 + cot θ) + y(1 + cot θ) 1/

CEE 10 Open Channel Flow, Dec. 1, Setting P y = 0 for constant A and θ we find: A = y [ (1 + cot θ) 1/ cot θ ] P = 4y(1 + cot θ) 1/ y cotθ Therefore: R h = 1 y Aha! The most efficient section for an arbitrary trapezoid has R h equal to one-half the depth.
