Let be str-shped bounded domin in S n,ds ) with smooth boundry. In this rticle, we give shrp lower bound for the first non-zero eigenvlue of the Steklov eigenvlue problem in. This result is the generliztion of result given by Kuttler nd Sigillito for str-shped bounded domin in R. Further we lso obtin two sided bound for the first non-zero eigenvlue of the Steklov problem on the bll in R n with rottionlly invrint metric nd with bounded rdil curvture.. Introduction Let be bounded domin in S n,ds ) with smooth boundry. Consider the following problem f = 0 in, = µf on, f ν where ν is the unit outwrd norml on the boundry nd µ is rel number. This problem is known s Steklov eigenvlue problem nd ws introduced by Steklov [] for bounded domins in the plne in 90. This problem is importnt s the set of eigenvlues of the Steklov problem is sme s the set of eigenvlues of the well known Dirichlet-Neumnn mp. This mp ssocites to ech function f defined on, the norml derivtive of its hrmonic extension on. The eigenvlues of the Steklov problem re discrete nd forms n incresing sequence 0 = µ 0 < µ < µ <. In this rticle, we re interested in finding bounds for the first non-zero eigenvlue µ of the Steklov problem. The vritionl chrcteriztion of µ is given by { } µ = inf u dv : uds = 0, u 0) C ). ) u ds Therereseverlresultswhichestimtethefirstnon-zeroeigenvlueµ ofthestekloveigenvlue problem [3, 8, 9, 0, ]. The first upper bound for µ ws given by Weinstock [] in 954. He proved tht mong ll simply connected plnr domins with nlytic boundry of fixed perimeter, the circle mximizes µ. Let R n be str shped domin with smooth boundry. Let p be centre of. Let = min{dp,x) x }, R M = mx{dp,x) x } nd h m = min{ x,ν x }, where ν is the outwrd unit norml to. With these nottions Brmble nd Pyne [3] proved tht ) µ n R M n h m. This bound is shrp when is bll. Pyne [5] clculted the two sided bound for µ on convex domin R in terms of minimum nd mximum curvture on boundry of. 2 BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE generlized this result for two dimensionl compct Riemnnin mnifoldm, g) with non-negtive Gussin curvture such tht geodesic curvture on M is bounded from below. With different pproch, Kuttler nd Sigillito [4] proved the following theorem for strshped bounded domin in R. Theorem. [4]). Let be str-shped bounded domin in R with smooth boundry. Then µ ) mx Rθ) R θ) 4 min R θ)r θ) where Rθ) := mx { x : x,x = x e iθ} nd equlity holds for disc. Grci nd Montno [3] generlized this result for the str-shped domin in R n. Theorem. [3]). Let R n be str-shped domin with smooth boundry nd unit outwrd norml ν. If 0 θ α < π, where cosθ) = ν, r, then the first non-zero eigenvlue of the Steklov problem µ ) stisfies µ ) ) n R M ) n ) { 4 } where := tn α, := minru), R M := mxru) nd Ru) := mx{r : x,x = r,u)}, r,u) represents the polr coordintes on R n. In Theorem 3., we give lower bound for the first non-zero steklov eigenvlue in str-shped domin in S n,ds ), following the ide ofkuttler nd Sigillito. In prticulr, given str-shped domin with respect to point p in S n,ds ), let be the minimum distnce of the from p nd B ) be the bll of rdius centered t p. We show tht µ ) Cµ B )) for some constnt C defined in Section 3. Let,g) be bll of rdius R in R n with rottionlly invrint metric g = dr σ r)du, where du is the stndrd metric on S n. Escobr [0] proved tht the first non-constnt eigenfunction for the Steklov problem on hs the form φr,u) = ψr)eu), where eu) nd ψr) stisfy S n en )e = 0, d σ n σ n r) ddr ) r) dr ψr) n )ψr) σ = 0 in 0,R), r) ψ R) = µ )ψr), ψ0) = 0. Using this result he proved tht the first non-zero eigenvlue µ for two dimensionl bll is µ =. For n-dimensionl bll,g) with rottionlly invrint metric g = dr σ r)du, Montno [] proved the following. If Ricg) 0, then µ If Ricg) 0, then µ ) n R R. R ) n R. In Theorem 3., we derive two sided bound for µ on the bll with rottionlly invrint metric nd with bounded rdil curvture.. Preliminries In this section we fix some nottions which will be used in the proof of the min results.,,
BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE 3 Definition.. Let M be Riemnnin mnifold nd p M. The injectivity rdius t p, denoted by injp), is defined s { injp) := sup r > 0 expp : B0,r) Bp,r) is diffeomorphism }. r Let be str-shped bounded domin in S n,ds ) with respect to point p nd Bp,injp)), geodesicbllofrdiusinjp). Let bethesmoothboundryofwithunitoutwrd norml ν. Since is str-shped with respect to the point p nd with smooth boundry, for every point q, there exists unique unit vector u T p S n nd R u > 0 such tht q = exp p R u u). In nottion we hve the following. = { exp p R u u) : u T p S n, u = }, = { exp p tu) : u T p S n, u =,0 t < R u }. In geodesic norml coordintes, nd cn be written s = {R u,u) : u T p S n, u = }, \{p} = {r,u) : u T p S n, u =,0 < r < R u }. Let := min R u, R M := mx R u. For Riemnnin mnifold M, g) with constnt sectionl curvture k, we know tht dr r g S n for k = 0, g = dr k sin kr)g S n for k > 0, dr k sinh k r)g S n for k < 0, with respect to the geodesic norml coordintes bout point, where g S n is the stndrd metric on the n )-dimensionl unit sphere nd r π k for k > 0. Then for ny smooth function f defined on, f = ) f r sin r f, where f represents the component of f tngentil to S n, the n )-dimensionl unit sphere. Let r betherdilvectorfieldstrtingtp,thecentreofndν betheunitoutwrdnormlto. Since is str-shped bounded domin, for ny point q, cosθq)) = νq), r q) > 0. Thereforeθq) < π for ll q. By compctnessof there exist α such tht 0 θq) α < π for ll q. Let,g), R > 0 be bll in R n centered t point p, with rottionlly invrint metric g = dr σ r)du, where du is the stndrd metric on S n nd σ : [0,R) [0, ) is non-zero smooth function stisfying σ0) = 0, σ 0) = nd σr) > 0,r 0,R]. Let q,g) nd X q rq) be unit tngent vector. The sectionl curvture K r,x) is clled the rdil curvture nd we know tht K r,x) = σ r) σr). Since K r,x) depends only on r, we will denote it by Kr). 3. Min Results We begin this section by stting the min results. The following theorem gives shrp lower bound for the first non-zero steklov eigenvlue for str-shped domin in S n,ds ).
4 BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE Theorem 3.. Let S n,ν nd α re s in Section. Let = mx { Ru sin R u) }. Then the first eigenvlue µ ) of ) stisfies the following inequlity ) ) ) µ ) 4 sin n ) secα) sin n R M ) µ B )), 3) R M where B ) is the geodesic bll of rdius centered t p. Furthermore, equlity occurs if nd only if is geodesic bll. Next theorem gives shrp lower bound s well s shrp upper bound for the first nonzero steklov eigenvlue on the bll with rottionlly invrint metric nd with bounded rdil curvture. Theorem 3.. Let,g), Kr) re s in Section nd,cn k ) be bll in R n of rdius R, with cnonicl metric cn k = dr sin k r)du. Then the following holds. i) If Kr) k. Then ii) If Kr) k. Then µ,cn k ) µ,g) ) n sink R µ,cn k ). 4) ) n sink R µ,cn k ) µ,g) µ,cn k ). Furthermore, equlity holds if nd only if,g) is isometric to the,cn k ). The following lemm is crucil to prove the Theorem 3.. Lemm 3.3. For x [0, π ], i) sinx sinx for 0, ii) sinx sinx for. Proof. Define gx) = sinx sinx. Observe tht g0) = 0 for ll R. i) We show tht g is n incresing function on [0, π ], for 0. As 0 x x π nd cosx cosx, it follows tht g x) 0. ii) Let. Then x x for x [0, π ]. We divide the proof into two cses. For x π, proof follows by using the sme rgument we used for 0. For x π, we will show tht sinx. Note tht sinx is n incresing function for 0 x π. So it is enough to prove tht sin ) π. Since, we hve sin ) π sin ) π =. Therefore sinx sin π ) sinx. Remrk 3.4. If sinx = sinx for ll x [0, π ], then it cn be esily seen tht either = 0 or =. Proof of Theorem 3.. By vritionl chrcteriztion of µ, we hve { } µ ) = inf u dv : uds = 0, u 0) C ). u ds For continuously differentil rel vlued function f defined on, we find lower bound for f dv nd n upper bound for f ds to find lower bound for f dv f ds.
BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE 5 A Lower bound for f dv. Let f be continuously differentil rel vlued function defined on. Then for q, ) f f = r sin r f. Therefore f dv = U p Ru 0 [ f r ) ] sin r f sin n rdrdu. Let r = ρru. Then the integrl is written s ) f dv = R u ρ ) ) f U p 0 R u R u sin ρru ρ ) ) ρ f R u sin ) ρr u ρ f, R u sin n ρru Ru dρdu = ) R u ρ ) ) f U p 0 R u R u sin ρru ρ ) ρ f sin ) ρr u ρ f, R u sin n ρru dρdu. sin ) f ρr u R u sin ρr u ) f Next we estimte f, R u. For ny function β on, Cuchy-Schwrtz inequlity gives ) ρ f sin ) f, R u R u ) ρ ) f β ρr u ρ β R u sin R u ρru ρ sin ) f. ρr u Thus f dv U p 0 R u R ) u β sin ) f ρr u ) ) β Ru ρ ) R sin ρru ) sin n ρru ) f ρ dρdu. 5) Note tht 0 ρ Ru nd 0 ρ,r u π. Hence it follow from Lemm 3.3 tht ) ρ ρru sinr u ) sin R u sinρ). This gives sinρ) R ) m nd ρ ) sin ρru R u sin ρru Since 0 ρ ρru R u π, we hve ), for ρ > 0. 6) sinr u ) 0 sin n ρ) sin n ρr u ). 7)
6 BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE We ssume β < nd by substituting bove inequlities in 5), we get [{ ) ) f dv U p 0 R u β Ru ) } f R u sinr u ) ρ R ) u β ) ] f sin n ρ) dρdu R u sinρ) ) [ { ) U p 0 R u β Ru } ) f sin R u ) ρ ) ] β Recll tht = mx { Ru sin R u) f dv sin ρ) f }. Hence R M ) U p β ) sin n ρ) dρdu. 0 [ { ) } ) f β ρ ] sin ρ) f sin n ρ) dρdu. ) By solving the eqution β = β for β we see tht Therefore β From this it follows tht f dv = ) β = 4. = β = ) 4 ) ) ) 4 R M ] sin ρ) f sin n ρ) dρdu ) ) ) 4 R M U p 0 > 0. [ f ρ ) ) f dv. 8) B) An upper bound for f ds. RecllthttheRiemnninvolumemesureon,denotedds, isgivenbyds = secθ) sin n R u ) du see [7]), where θ nd R u re defined in Section. Then f ds = f secθ) sin n R u ) du. U p By using the fct tht sin n sin n R u sin n R M nd substituting r = ρru, this integrl becomes f ds secα) sinn R M ) sin n ) = secα) sinn R M ) sin n ) U p S) f sin n ) du f ds. 9)
BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE 7 If f stisfies S) f ds = 0, by inequlities 8) nd 9) we hve ) f dv ) ) 4 sin n ) BR f m) dv f ds R M secα) sin n R M ) S) f ds ) ) ) 4 sin n ) secα) sin n R M ) µ B )). 0) R M Next we find test function for the Steklov problem on B ) in terms of first eigenfunction for the Steklov problem on nd use the bove inequlity to get the desired bound. Let ψ be first eigenfunction for the Steklov problem ) on. Define ψ := ψ ψ where ψ = S) ψ ds VolS )). ) Observe tht S) ψds = 0. Therefore from 0), we hve ) ψ dv ) ) 4 sin n ) ψ ds R M secα) sin n R M ) µ B )). ) Next by using the fct tht ψ ds = 0 we obtin ψ dv = ψ dv ψ ds ) ψ ψ ds ψ dv ψ ds = µ ). 3) Combining the inequlity ) nd 3) we obtin ) ) ) µ ) 4 sin n ) R M secα) sin n R M ) µ B )). If is geodesic bll of rdius R, then = R M = R nd = α = 0, hence equlity holds in 3). Next ssume tht equlity hold in 3), then equlity holds in 6) nd 7). This implies R u =. Hence is geodesic bll. This proves the theorem. The following lemm is used to prove the Theorem 3.. Let r for k = 0, sin sin k r = kr k for k > 0, sinh kr k for k < 0. Lemm 3.5. Let,g), R > 0 be bll in R n with rottionlly invrint metric g = dr σ r)du nd Kr) be the rdil sectionl curvture such tht Kr) k for some k R. We ssume R π k when k > 0. Then the following holds. i) σr) sin k r) for r [0,R], σr) ii) lim r 0 sin k r) = nd iii) is decresing function. Proof. σr) sin k r) i) Let k R nd observe tht sin k r is the solution of y r)kyr) = 0, y0) = 0, y 0) =, r [0,R].
8 BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE Since Kr) k nd σ r)kr)σr) = 0, σ0) = 0, σ 0) =, r [0,R], it follows from Sturm Comprison Theorem [6] tht σr) sin k r) for r [0,R]. ii) Since σ 0) = = sin k0), it follows from L Hospitl Rule tht iii) For k < 0, σr) sinh kr lim r 0 σr) sin k r) = lim r 0 nd σ r) sinh kr kσr) cosh ) kr σ r) sin kr) =. ) = σ r) sinh kr kσr) cosh kr sinh kr = σ r) sinh kr kσ r) cosh kr kσ r) cosh krkσr) sinh kr = σ r)kσr)) sinh kr 0. Therefore σ r) sinh kr kσr) cosh kr is decresing function of r nd Hence σr) sinh kr σ r) sinh kr kσr) cosh kr 0 for r 0. ) 0. This implies tht σr) sinh kr A similr computtion s bove proves tht well. σr) sin k r) is decresing function. Proof of Theorem 3.. First we prove the theorem for Kr) k. Let f be continuously differentil rel vlued function defined on. Then f = ) f r σ r) f, is decresing function for k 0 s where f is the component of f tngentil to S n. Therefore [ f ) ] f dv g = r σ r) f σ n r)drdu. By Lemm 3.5, sin k R) σr) sin k r) for 0 < r R, we hve [ f ) ) ] ) n σr) f dv g r sin k r σ r) f sin n k rdrdu sin k R ) n [ f ) ] = sin k R r sin k r f sin n k rdrdu ) n = f dv cnk, sin k R
BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE 9 nd Hence f ds g = f σ n R)du ) n = f sin n k R)du sin k R ) n = f ds cnk. sin k R f dv g f ds g f dv cnk. 4) f ds cnk Now we obtin test function for the Steklov problem on,cn k ) in terms of first eigenfunction for the Steklov problem on,g). Let ψ be the first eigenfunction for the Steklov problem ) on,g). Then ψ ds g = 0. Define ψ := ψ ψ where ψ = Observe tht ψds cnk = 0. From ) nd 4) it follows tht Next we prove tht µ,g) Note tht f dv g = Lemm 3.5 gives f dv g sin k R) σr) sin k r) = sink R µ,cn k ) ψ dv cnk ψ ds cnk ψ ds cnk ds cnk. B R ψ dv g ψ ds g B R ψ dv g ψ ds g = µ,g). 5) ) n sink R µ,cn k ). [ f r ) ] σ r) f σ n r)drdu. 6) for 0 < r R. By substituting this in 6), we get [ f ) ) ] sink r r σr) sin k r) f sin n k rdrdu [ f ) ) ] sink R r sin k r) f sin n k rdrdu ) [ ) ) ] f sin k R r sin k r) f sin n k rdrdu. Since sin k R), it follows tht ) [ f ) ] f sink R dv g r sin k r) f sin n k rdrdu ) sink R = f dv cnk.
0 BOUNDS FOR THE FIRST NON-ZERO STEKLOV EIGENVALUE Hence f dv g f ds g sink R ) n f dv cnk f. ds cnk By similr computtion s in the previous cse, we get ) n sink R µ,g) µ,cn k ). 7) By combining 5) nd 7), we hve µ,cn k ) µ,g) ) n sink R µ,cn k ). If K X k, then by the uniqueness theorem of ordinry differentil eqution, σr) = sin k r for r [0,R] nd equlity holds for ll inequlities in the proof. Hence ) n sink R µ,cn k ) = µ,g) = µ,cn k ). Next we ssume tht µ,cn k ) = µ,g) = ) n sink R µ,cn k ). Then sin k R) = σr) sin k r) = lim σr) r 0 sin k r) = nd ψ = 0. Therefore σr) = sin k r for r [0,R]. Hence the theorem follows. Proof for Kr) k follows from similr computtion s the proof for the cse Kr) k. cknowledgment I would like to thnk Prof. G.
